Which Sentra is it?

EPA figures for each version of the 2020 Nissan Sentra. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.

VersionDriveEPA rating
2.0L 4-cylFWD33 mpg
  • Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Sentra that averages well under the EPA 33 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Check the odometer against these mileages

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2020 Nissan Sentra, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Steering522 crashes

Front tie rods bend or break. Drivers describe violent steering-wheel vibration, clicking or thumping when turning in reverse, excessive play, and front-end shake over potholes or near 60 mph. Some say the car stopped responding to the wheel, and 2 reports involve crashes with injuries. Most complaints connect the problem to a federal tie-rod recall. Many describe waiting about a year for parts, getting repeat replacements, or doubting the recall work was ever done. Some dealers also found a worn steering rack. One clicking complaint lists 21,900 miles.

  • Electrical332 crashes

Door lock actuators fail, usually on the rear or driver-side doors. Those doors stop locking or unlocking from the fob or the interior switch, and the alarm may not sound when a locked door is opened. One report describes a door that would not open from inside or out. These failures often show up just after the warranty ends, at 18,000 to 43,000 miles. Other reports cover automatic emergency braking on empty roads, a blank or blue backup camera, sticking windows, and a key fob the car does not recognize. Both crash reports involve braking or blind-spot warning failures.

  • Automatic emergency braking261 crash

Automatic emergency braking activates with nothing in the road. The car brakes hard or stops on city streets and highways, often with a red dash warning and beeping. Malfunction warnings for emergency braking and forward collision warning come and go, and some owners say rain and road glare set them off. Dealers often cannot duplicate the fault. Replacement sensors and cameras have not always stopped it from coming back. Several reports put the first events under 20,000 miles. One report links a crash to the malfunction warning.

  • Brakes141 crash

Most of these reports also describe phantom automatic braking: the car brakes hard at 25 to 60 mph with no obstacle ahead. Owners name bright sunlight, rain, and uphill grades as triggers, and many say it began within weeks of purchase. Repeated dealer visits often end with no fix or a fault that cannot be reproduced. In the one crash report, the opposite happened: the system failed to stop or warn before the car hit a parked vehicle. A separate report describes a brake caliper piston popping out.

  • Transmission7No crashes

There is no single pattern here. One driver says the car stalled in traffic and would not move, and the dealer replaced the CVT transaxle. Another describes repeated loss of power with a "Malfunction" message, which a new brake light switch fixed at 41,000 miles. Other reports cover hesitation and vibration on acceleration, surging when slowing for a stop, and starter and electrical faults still unfixed after 5 or 6 dealer visits. One complaint here describes a tie rod snapping on the highway.

  • Suspension5No crashes

Tie rods fracture, sometimes at very low speed or over an ordinary bump. The car becomes undrivable or veers into whatever is beside it. Reports mention a steering-wheel shimmy before the break, and one catastrophic failure also took out the lower control arm. One fracture at 12,500 miles was later linked to a recall notice on this part. Another report lists repeated "Engine Malfunction, Power Reduced" warnings, plus an instrument cluster and screen that reboot while driving.

  • Backup camera41 crash

The backup camera shows a blue, frozen, fuzzy, or blank screen when the car is in reverse. Fixes do not always last. The fault can return after the recall remedy or a warranty repair, and some dealers decline further work because no recall applies to that VIN. In one crash report, a bus hit the car while the camera was frozen and gave no alert. Another describes rear automatic braking that fires while parking with nothing behind the car. Reported mileages range from 16,000 to 50,000.

  • Engine4No crashes

Four reports share no common cause. One describes an engine malfunction warning at 37000 miles that a computer update did not fix. Another reports shuddering with a rattle from under the hood near 28,879 miles. The other two cover a broken tensioner pulley and an engine that burns oil between changes, with a check engine light, power loss, and loud noises from the engine.

In owners' own words

Excerpts from complaints Sentra owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.

Steering
When driving my sensors are ringing off as if someone is in front of my car. The brakes will be pushed down stopping the car while driving. Also when driving you hear a loud clicking noise which I was told before its my tired rod. I replaced this tired rod once before when it snapped while driving before this recall was put out. I have complained numerous times to my dealership and they are not taking this matter seriously.

Steering
My front passenger tire rod on my Nissan broke while backing it up out of my driveway in Gillette,Wy. So I contacted the Nissan dealer in Casper,WY and they informed it was on a recall. So I had Quality Auto in Gillette, Wy take it to Vista Nissan in Casper, Wy and they informed me that they could not fix it because Quality Auto welded the tire rod together to get it on to the trailer.

Electrical
I was at a stop light in a busy area and I got a message saying critical engine malfunction warning, engine power reduced. I had to floor the car to get it to 5 mph, then when I got it in the only minimally safe area I could the emergency braking system was the only thing that stopped it. My brakes failed too. My car has only 71K miles and is not quite 5 years old. It's been meticulously maintained as well. This is NOT acceptable.

Electrical
was driving down the highway nothing in front of me my car hit the brakes and flashed warning on the dash and made me come to a stop after this happened my fuel economy decreased over 100 miles per tank other times it just activates and taps the brakes for no reason also every window except the driver window gets stuck several times a week another thing some how one of my rims cracked

Automatic emergency brakingCrash reported
I was driving to pick up some body as Rideshare driver on as part time, and i crashed into a car was parking on the side of the road, I still have no idea why is that happend. But i think the Malfunction Warning that was on dash got something to do with it!

Filed with NHTSA, July 2023

Automatic emergency braking
The forward collision warning keeps malfunctioning; it has done it a total of three times so far once when I first cranked up the car and was just sitting in it for about 10 minutes and it popped on as soon as I switched into drive and it wouldn’t allow me to move so I had to restart my car, second time was on the interstate and luckily nothing bad happened and third time it just popped on when I cranked my car and then cut off as I was driving

Brakes
I was driving down the highway and my Automatic emergency brakes system decided to kick in. Scared the hell out of me. nobody was hurt thank God! Luckily there was no cars around me. Or im sure i could have been seriously hurt or even killed. I took the vehicle to nissan dealership they kept my car for 3 months and supposedly they fixed the problem. But i have proof of the messages and lights on my dash telling me malfucntion. Like wth?

Brakes
At 5:44 on Hwy 50/Elizabeth Ave in Pueblo, CO. The automatic emergency braking system locked up with no reason for it to do so. Thankfully we were not rear ended. I have documented via photograph of this system error alert coming on several times a week while driving this vehicle. It has been to the dealership now twice for this issue and will be making yet another appt to get the car back in again.

Where the 2020 fits in the Sentra's history

Redesigns and mid-cycle updates change what can go wrong.

The 2020 is the first model year of the Sentra's eighth generation (2020 on). First years of a redesign often carry teething problems that Nissan fixes in later years, so the checks above matter more than usual.

Should you avoid the first year of a redesign? See the 45-car study.
