Which Sentra is it?

EPA figures for each version of the 2024 Nissan Sentra. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.

  • Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Sentra that averages well under the EPA 34 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Owners report these failures starting around the mileages below. A car inside one of these ranges deserves a closer look at that part, or records showing it was already fixed.

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2024 Nissan Sentra, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Steering72 crashes

Front wheels can suddenly turn out or in at speed, taking away steering control. Two of the seven complaints involve crashes. Reports describe a ball joint separating from the control arm and the left front driveshaft coming off the transaxle, leaving the wheels at sharp angles at 40 to 55 mph. Warning signs include loud banging, popping, rubbing, or clicking from the front end during turns and over bumps, sometimes within the first 2,700 miles. Owners tie the driveshaft failure to a recall, and dealers have replaced front shaft assemblies on fleet cars.

  • Electrical31 crash

The car can shut off in moving traffic, losing drive power and lights with no warning. One of the three complaints involves a crash with an injury after earlier stalling episodes, along with airbag problems. Owners describe needing repeated jump starts, yet battery tests come back clean and the dealer cannot confirm a cause. A separate, less serious complaint covers phones dropping in and out of Bluetooth and CarPlay over USB.

  • Transmission3No crashes

Jerking, hesitation, and loss of power are the common thread. Reports describe lurching from a stop or when shifting into park, grinding noises on takeoff, unexpected engine revving, and a feeling that the car is about to stall. Some cars display Check Engine and CVT Malfunction Service Now warnings. Other symptoms include the push button failing to shut the car off and an electrical burning smell. Problems start within the first months of ownership, and dealers often find no failure after repeated visits.

  • Body and structure2No crashes

The front splash guard can tear off after driving through standing water. It is held by plastic push pins and a single screw, and it can come loose again if the dealer reattaches it without replacing the damaged part. A separate report describes brakes failing to slow the car at 35 mph with cruise control on, with the parking brake finally stopping it, plus a driver's door that would not open from the inside lever. Only two complaints are on file here.

  • Suspension2No crashes

Loud creaking, popping, or rubbing comes from the front end or undercarriage during turns. In one case the noise starts at 2,500 miles on a new car, at all speeds and with no warning lights, and the dealer orders a special-order axle replacement. A second complaint describes rubbing from the left side on hard left turns. These noises match the front axle sounds filed under steering, where some cars went on to lose control.

In owners' own words

Excerpts from complaints Sentra owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.

SteeringCrash reported
The front passenger wheel turned out at a 45degree angle while going straight at 40mph causing loss of control and turning the car right into a curb. After looking the ball joint separated from the control arm

Steering
This is the second time in the last 45 day that we have had a report of the front end "popping". We took 1 vehicle to Nissan of Murfeesboro and they replaced both front shaft assemblys. This vehicle was taken to Newton Nissan and they had to do the same repair on this vehicle. I have 12 of the year, make model in our fleet and have serious concerns

Recalls to confirm (3)

Recall repairs are free at any Nissan dealer, but the seller may never have had them done. Check each campaign number against the VIN.

  1. 24V498000Wipers and visibilityJul 2024

Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain 2024 Nissan Sentra vehicles. The windshield may have air bubbles on the front lower driver's side, which can obscure the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN). As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 205, "Glazing Materials.".

Risk: An owner who cannot see their VIN clearly may not recognize their vehicle is involved in a safety recall, and may not have the recall remedy performed, which could increase the risk of injury, fire, or a crash.

Fix: Dealers will inspect and replace the windshield as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed August 29, 2024. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-867-7669. Nissan's number for this recall is PMA38.

  2. 24V304000TransmissionApr 2024

Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain 2024 Sentra vehicles. The front left-side driveshaft may not be fully seated in the continuously variable transmission (CVT) assembly, or may have a loose or missing retaining clip, which can cause a transmission fluid leak and loss of drive power.

Risk: An unexpected loss of drive power can increase the risk of a crash.

Fix: Dealers will inspect the front left driveshaft, and if necessary, replace the driveshaft and CVT assembly, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed June 26, 2024. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-867-7669. Nissan's number for this recall is PMA37.

  3. 24V154000AirbagsFeb 2024

Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain 2024 Titan, Frontier, Infiniti QX60, Pathfinder, 2023-2024 Sentra, Versa, Kicks, Infiniti QX50, and 2023 Rogue vehicles. Due to a manufacturing issue, the driver's air bag inflator may absorb moisture, and cause the air bag to deploy improperly.

Risk: An air bag that deploys improperly may not protect the driver as intended during a crash, increasing the risk of injury.

Fix: Dealers will replace the front driver's air bag assembly, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed April 10, 2024. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-867-7669. Nissan's numbers for this recall are PD103, PD104, and PMA34.
