Which Sentra is it?

EPA figures for each version of the 2019 Nissan Sentra. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.

VersionDriveEPA rating
1.6L 4-cylFWD29 mpg
1.8L 4-cylFWD32 mpg
  • The 2019 Nissan Sentra was sold in two versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
  • Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Sentra that averages well under the EPA 29 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Check the odometer against these mileages

Owners report these failures starting around the mileages below. A car inside one of these ranges deserves a closer look at that part, or records showing it was already fixed.

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2019 Nissan Sentra, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Electrical531 crash

The radio turns on by itself with the car off, sometimes playing all night. Screens and the climate display go blank or freeze while driving. Push-button starts fail when the car does not register the brake pedal. Owners link this to the brake light switch covered by recall 21V135 (campaign PM971), and some cars outside the recall show the same fault. Front radar warnings shut off cruise control and automatic emergency braking, even after repeat dealer visits. Door locks, seatbelt lights and airbag lights also act up. One report involves a crash.

  • Transmission501 crash

The CVT fails outright, with reported failures between 98,000 and 167,000 miles. Warning signs include jerking or slipping on takeoff, sudden downshifts, stalling, high revs with no added speed, and a car that will not go past 20 mph. Some owners say dealers found nothing wrong until the transmission quit. Most face a full transmission replacement. One crash with 3 injuries followed a loud noise, weak brakes and the shifter popping into reverse.

  • Exterior lights193 crashes

Most of these reports concern recall 21V135000 for the stop lamp switch. When the switch fails, the brake lights go dark and the car may not start, sometimes taking several tries or a jump. Many owners got the recall notice and then waited months for parts. Some saw the failure come back after the recall repair, which Nissan treats as a one-time fix. Three reports involve crashes, mostly rear-end collisions. One fire-related report describes burnt wires in the wiring harness after the taillights failed.

  • Brakes141 crash

Automatic emergency braking slams on with nothing ahead. Small bumps, raised manhole covers and an empty highway at 70 mph have all set it off, and some cars come to a full stop. Other cars show a constant front radar warning that disables the system. A separate fault is the brake light switch failing to register the pedal, which blocks starting and kills the brake lights. A few owners report a pedal that sinks to the floor, a pedal that needs heavy force, or seized front calipers.

  • Airbags139 crashes

Front airbags fail to deploy in crashes, the most common report here. This category has 9 crash-related filings and 13 injuries. Several owners say no warning light came on beforehand. Other reports describe curtain airbags firing at highway speed with no collision, a door airbag cover popping off while driving, and a passenger seat sensor that thinks an empty seat is occupied. Some filings actually describe automatic emergency braking engaging on its own, including a high-speed spin into a guard rail.

  • Automatic emergency braking8No crashes

The system fails both ways. Automatic emergency braking engages with no cars ahead and causes abrupt stops, in one case a fishtail at 45 mph. Other owners hear warnings, but the car never brakes, or the pedal briefly drops to the floor when the system sees an obstruction. Malfunction warnings come and go, and dealers often say it works as designed. One collision tech says the bumper hits the sensor bracket over small bumps and knocks the sensor out of calibration.

  • Acceleration and cruise control51 crash

Front radar faults knock out cruise control and automatic emergency braking. In some cars the warning returns within minutes of every start. After a small bump at highway speed, one car lost all acceleration until it was shut off and restarted. Reported fixes include recalibrating or replacing the front radar unit, sometimes at the owner's cost once the warranty ran out. One crash report describes the engine racing and the car taking off on its own in a drive-thru line.

  • Body and structure5No crashes

Door locks stop responding reliably to the key fob and the inside switch, starting at the driver door and spreading to the passenger door. Other reports cover a loose, rattling hood and hood paint that chips when the wiper blades are lifted, which the manufacturer called a design error. Another describes an overhead console that came loose from the roof and hung by its wires. One shop found the front impact bar missing during a crash repair. These reports are few and do not share a cause.

In owners' own words

Excerpts from complaints Sentra owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.

Electrical
I have a 2019 Nissan Sentra with only 17,000 miles. The seatbelt indicator light stays on even while wearing the seatbelt. There is no warning chime just the light. However, if there is a passenger the seatbelt indicator light will go off. My concern is for the passenger's safety. I'm concerned if everything will work like it should especially if there happens to be an accident and the airbags deploy.

Electrical
Odometer Fraud. The contact was attempting to purchase a 2019 Nissan Sentra. The contact stated that the vehicle was advertised for sale by a local dealer on Facebook Marketplace with a photo of the odometer reading of 72,000 miles. After obtaining a Carfax report for the vehicle, the contact discovered that the mileage was 196,000.

Recalls to confirm (2)

Recall repairs are free at any Nissan dealer, but the seller may never have had them done. Check each campaign number against the VIN.

  1. 21V135000Exterior lightsMar 2021

Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain 2016-2019 Nissan Sentra vehicles. The brake light switch may become contaminated, preventing the circuit from closing and the brake lights from illuminating.

Risk: The brake lights may not illuminate, increasing the risk of a crash.

Fix: Dealers will replace the brake light switch and install a protective grommet, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed July 1, 2022. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800867-7769. Nissan's number for this recall is PM971.

  2. 19V654000Backup cameraSep 2019

Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain 2018-2019 Nissan Altima, Armada, Frontier, Kicks, Leaf, Maxima, Murano, NV, NV200, Pathfinder, Rogue, Rogue Sport, Sentra, Titan, Titan Diesel, Versa Note and Versa Sedan vehicles, as well as Infiniti Q50, Q60, QX30 and QX80 vehicles. Additionally included are 2019 Nissan GT-R and Taxi and Infiniti QX50, QX60, Q70, Q70L vehicles. The back-up camera and display settings can be adjusted such that the rear view image is no longer visible and the system will retain that setting the next time the vehicle is placed in reverse. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 111, "Rear Visibility.".

Risk: The lack of an image in the back-up camera display increases the risk of a crash.

Fix: Nissan will notify owners in phases, having dealers update the back-up camera settings software, free of charge. The recall began November 11, 2019 and all affected VINs should be activated. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-867-7669 or INFINITI customer service at 1-800-662-6200.
