Which Tiguan is it?
EPA figures for each version of the 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.
| Version | Drive | EPA rating |
|---|---|---|
| 2.0L 4-cyl | AWD, FWD | 23–25 mpg |
- Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Tiguan that averages well under the EPA 23 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.
Check the odometer against these mileages
Owners report these failures starting around the mileages below. A car inside one of these ranges deserves a closer look at that part, or records showing it was already fixed.

Why these checks: what owners reported
NHTSA complaints for the 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.
Electrical27No crashes
A "Check Starter System" warning appears and the car loses electrical power while the engine keeps running. Headlights, brake lights, turn signals, hazards, gauges, and climate control all go dark. Many reports tie this to hot weather or parking in the sun, and some point to a faulty ignition switch. The overhead console also falls here, and one driver was hit in the head. Other patterns include red SOS emergency-call errors with costly out-of-warranty module replacement, wipers that switch on with turn signals or bumps, and a door switch fault that sets the parking brake while driving.
Engine121 crash
Oil consumption is the most common complaint. Some engines need a quart added within the first few thousand miles, and one owner reports a quart every 1,000 miles. Dealers often call this within normal limits. Related reports describe PCV or crankcase breather failures, white exhaust smoke, and in one case a condemned engine. The oil filter adapter gasket leaks coolant and has been replaced repeatedly on one car. Stalling at idle and sudden engine shutdown also appear. One crash, with 2 injuries, followed violent shaking and an Electronic Throttle Control warning.
Body and structure9No crashes
The overhead console detaches from the headliner and swings by its wires, blocking the rearview mirror and the right side mirror. It happens while parked or driving, sometimes in high heat, with no warning. Reported mileages run from about 26,000 to 91,000. Repairs are often delayed because the replacement part is on national backorder, and some dealers suggest tape in the meantime. Some cars fail again after a warranty replacement. A separate report describes a driver door contact switch error that sets the electronic parking brake.
Brakes8No crashes
A "Brake booster fault" warning appears and the pedal turns hard or drops to the floor. The fault often clears on its own and shops cannot reproduce it. In one case it returned after the booster was replaced. Other complaints describe squealing under light braking from about 1,000 miles, uneven pad wear, and rear pads wearing faster than the fronts. Automatic emergency braking can engage on gentle slopes when pulling onto a highway. One rental car pulled across lanes at highway speed with the ABS light on, at about 70,000 miles.
Automatic emergency braking5No crashes
Automatic emergency braking engages with nothing in the road and brings the car to a near or full stop. Drivers report this at around 40 to 45 mph, in traffic and on empty roads, and on several occasions per car. Reported mileages are low, from about 7,722 to 17,000. Dealers and independent shops usually find no fault code, and one dealer called the system "sensitive." Sudden stops in moving traffic create a real rear-end collision risk.
Transmission5No crashes
Acceleration hesitates or lags from a stop or when turning into traffic. The pedal can be pressed to the floor for a few seconds before the car responds. Other reports describe jerking from a faulty transmission sensor, hard shifts, and an ERC code that limits the car to 30 mph. Dealers often cannot duplicate the problem, so many cars go unrepaired. One reported mileage is about 40,000. Drivers describe near misses with traffic behind them.
Exterior lights3No crashes
Few complaints are filed here, and most are not about lighting. Two of the three describe the overhead console breaking its brackets and hanging by its wires after the car sat in summer heat, blocking the windshield and mirrors. The third concerns cheap aftermarket headlights that failed within minutes, not the factory lamps. No pattern of factory headlight or taillight failure appears in these reports.
Acceleration and cruise control21 crash
Only 2 complaints are filed, but one is serious. A car accelerated on its own while parking at about 1,700 miles and struck two vehicles, injuring the driver. No warning light came on and a mechanic could not find a cause. The other report describes a throttle delay of 2-3 seconds when merging or turning left, with no fault codes. That leaves the car stuck in oncoming traffic.
In owners' own words
Excerpts from complaints Tiguan owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.
After sitting in the hot sun for an hour or so, turned it on, and got a "check starter" warning, and all the dash instruments went off. No lights, turn signals, brake lights. Radio worked, windows worked for a bit, then nothing. Had power steering and brakes. Had warning lights on the mirrors. No AC/heat. Speedometer, tach, fuel, temp, display - all off. Car still ran. Found issue to be a faulty ignition switch

SOS malfunction light came on after downloading & syncing the car with the MyVW app. I took the car to the dealer & they said the module needs to be replaced & it would be $1500 because it’s out of warranty but it seems like in 2021 VW replaced it for free because it’s a known issue. I did not purchase this car until 2024 so it’s not covered. There are multiple people noting the same issue on online forums.

The vehicle burns oil. When the dealer was confronted they said it was “normal” for the car to burn half a quart of oil every 2000 miles. No oil stains on the ground. The engine is burning the oil.

Complete engine stoppage approximately 18:00 21 July 2021. Headed east on Germany Road, a serpentine two lane road with no shoulder. Engine stopped and vehivle coasted to a stop. I turned on the emergency lights and put the vehicle in park. Fortunately, I was able to restart the car and proceed. It was pure luck that I wasn't rear-ended.

The overhead console fell down and was hanging by the cables connected to it which control the sunroof motor, SOS system, Info button, rear interior lights and driver/passenger dome lights. It hangs between driver and passenger at roughly 4 inches from the roof and obscures peripheral vision and usage of the rear-view mirror. Finally, if it occurred while driving it could easily have caused an accident.

I am getting 2 warning messages- fault electronic parking brake and error driver door contact switch. The car seems to think my door is open and therefore turns on the emergency brake for safety. This has happened when I am parked and also when I am driving.

While Driving Breaks got hard to push and car system made “beep” alert with words “Break booster fault” displayed on instrument panel. Pulled over and error went away. Checked brake booster and lines. Can not get it to duplicate. Read on Volkswagen forums online that this is happening to others. Car shops unable to duplicate as well but reports online state that is has happened again after being cleared by Auto Shop.
Filed with NHTSA, January 2026
While just start the car and drive it for 2 or 3 minutes a loud alarm sound and my dash lit up in red saying "BRAKE BOOSTER FAULTY" the car brakes feel week and two minutes later it disappear and the brake returns to normal. my mechanic said that it is something that only the dealership can fix because it looks like a problem that must to be recalled. it is a safety issue that can lead to an accident on the freeway.

Where the 2020 fits in the Tiguan's history
Redesigns and mid-cycle updates change what can go wrong.
The 2020 is the third model year of the Tiguan's second generation (2018–2023).
Volkswagen updated the Tiguan for 2021, so a 2020 does not have those changes.
What changed for 2021 (not on a 2020)
- Newly designed headlamps and grille
- Updated interior with advanced tech and displays
