Which Forte is it?

EPA figures for each version of the 2020 Kia Forte. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.

VersionDriveEPA rating
1.6L 4-cylFWD30 mpg
2.0L 4-cylFWD35 mpg
  • The 2020 Kia Forte was sold in two versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
  • Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Forte that averages well under the EPA 30 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Check the odometer against these mileages

Owners report these failures starting around the mileages below. A car inside one of these ranges deserves a closer look at that part, or records showing it was already fixed.

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2020 Kia Forte, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Transmission131 crash

The transmission slips out of gear, often at highway speed. RPMs surge between roughly 2,000 and 5,000 while the car loses drive, sometimes slowing to a crawl or acting as if it were in neutral. Hard shifting, delayed gear changes and weak acceleration from a stop also come up. Failures cluster between 70,000 and 88,000 miles, and some owners report that replacement transmissions failed again. Warning lights often stay off. In an injury report, a car placed in park rolled backward and struck the driver.

  • Electrical8No crashes

The car stalls or shuts off without warning, often at stops or low speed, and some cars randomly fail to start. Idle speed surges and drops while parked, and dealers often cannot reproduce the fault. Other reports describe false collision-avoidance warnings, a crankshaft position sensor that keeps failing and cuts power, jammed rear windows, and delayed brake lights. Water in the trunk can also disable the alarm and trunk sensors. Some theft complaints blame the missing engine immobilizer.

  • Engine8No crashes

Oil disappears between changes, in one case 3 quarts, and some cars end up needing a rebuilt or replaced engine. Owners say no oil pressure or check engine warning came on before the damage was done. One report notes a growing gasoline smell in the oil. On a high-mileage car, a failing catalytic converter sets a check engine code and the car struggles on hills. One car caught fire after a pop and a stall and was a total loss. In another case, white smoke and power loss came from a missing drain plug.

The car stalls while driving, with the check engine light on. In one case, at about 117,892 miles, a dealer traced the stall to a failed catalytic converter. In another, the engine knocked before stalling, and a mechanic found failed intake and exhaust camshaft position sensors along with metal shavings. Both cars lost power on the road, one at about 55 mph. Only 2 complaints are on file.

  • Airbags44 crashes

No deployment in a crash is the claim in all 4 complaints here. The crashes include a side impact at the driver's front door, a rear-end hit that pushed the car into a truck, and a deer landing on the windshield at highway speed. Five people were injured across these crashes, and one driver was knocked unconscious. No report describes an air bag warning light beforehand.

  • Steering21 crash

The wheel stiffens or locks up together with the key, usually at low speed or while backing up. One owner reports this happening 3 times. A more serious report describes stiff steering right after startup, followed by brakes that seemed not to work on a downhill street. That car left the road and crashed. With only 2 complaints on file, no broader pattern is clear.

In owners' own words

Excerpts from complaints Forte owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.

Transmission
My vehicle has 74,000 miles on it. While driving on the highway at 70 mph, the RPMs began fluctuating erratically, jumping from 2,000 to 3,000 and then from 2,000 to 5,000 before the car completely slipped into neutral. I was stranded in the middle of nowhere. Took it to the dealership and since it's out of warranty they quoted me 3500 American dollars to replace the transmission. Don't buy a Kia.

Transmission
On highway at 65mph engine began revving, accelerating higher on its own then speed would drop down 10-15 mph, erratic tachometer going up to max 6 at 65 mph, slipping gears and took total control of speed and then dropped down to 10mph at 6 tachometer and then wouldn’t go past 5 mph. No warning lights, no check engine.

Electrical
I have brought the car in 3 times since I owed it stating it will not start at random times. I have videos and reports from corporate in regards to this. Along with the car not randomly starting I have had multiple issues of the warning lights coming on. The last 3 oil changes, the techs have said that I was completely out of oil. This car was deemed a lemon and I have been unsuccessful with the dealership on a respectful outcome

Electrical
The back windows won't go up or down they jam. You try to roll the passenger windows up or down & they won't do anything. Sometimes you have to turn on & off the car a few times open & closing the driver side door so the windows will work. Also the break lights Sometimes have a late response when you hit the breaks the lights don't respond has a delayed response

Where the 2020 fits in the Forte's history

Redesigns and mid-cycle updates change what can go wrong.

The 2020 is the second model year of the Forte's third generation (2019–2024).

Kia updated the Forte for 2021, so a 2020 does not have those changes.

What changed for 2021 (not on a 2020)

  • Updated exterior styling
  • New infotainment features
