These checks are specific to this model year. For tires, body panels, fluids, and the other basics every used car needs, use the general inspection guide.

Which Explorer is it?

EPA figures for each version of the 2021 Ford Explorer. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.

VersionDriveEPA rating
2.3L 4-cylGas4WD, RWD23–24 mpg
3.0L 6-cylGas4WD, RWD20–21 mpg
3.3L 6-cylFlex fuel4WD19 mpg
3.3L 6-cylHybrid4WD, RWD25–27 mpg
  • The 2021 Ford Explorer was sold in four versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
  • On the hybrid, watch for the car moving off on electric power at low speed and for any hybrid system warning on the dash.
  • Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Explorer that averages well under the EPA 19 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2021 Ford Explorer, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Transmission953 crashes

Rear axle mounting bolts fracture, and several reports say it happened even after the recall repair. One injury crash followed the rear wheels wobbling and the vehicle fishtailing. Transmissions hesitate between park, reverse, and drive, clunk loudly, drop into neutral mid-turn, or lock up, with burnt clutches found at 25,000 miles. Some cars go into limp mode at highway speed. Others lose power to internal engine failure, coolant in the oil, or turbos leaking oil. A few owners say the recall software update made the car lurch or stop abruptly.

  • Electrical302 crashes

Cars stall at stop signs or traffic lights and will not restart, often with no warning light, and dealers often cannot find the cause. Some lock in park or shift into park on their own. Three reports involve fire, including one that started in the engine bay while driving. The backup camera shows a blue screen in reverse, and some owners waited on recall parts that were not available. Other reports describe a parked car rolling back and pinning its owner, and front windows that stop responding to the switch.

  • Backup camera23No crashes

The rearview camera shows a blue or black screen in reverse, first now and then and later every time for some owners. Most reports fall between about 28,000 and 36,000 miles. Many owners got the recall notice but were told repair parts were not available, sometimes long after notification. Some say rear automatic braking and parking alerts fail along with the camera. One dealer said the APIM module could not be updated and quoted about $1,800 to replace it. Others found their VIN left out of the recall despite the same symptoms.

  • Engine20No crashes

Catastrophic engine failure is the main pattern, sometimes at low mileage. Dealers report metal in the oil, a failed valve keeper dropping an intake valve into a cylinder, fractured timing chains, and coolant in the oil from a leaking internal water pump. Replacement quotes reach $11,000 to $12,000. Blue-gray smoke on cold start and blown turbos also show up, and one replaced engine kept smoking. Other reports cover fuel diluting the oil, oil leaks, and exhaust odor through the vents. Some owners paid for engines because their VIN fell outside an engine recall.

  • Body and structure18No crashes

Exterior trim comes loose, including door cladding, A-pillar and B-pillar trim, and door L-trim, sometimes at highway speed. In one case loose cladding lodged in a wheel well and sliced a tire at 75 MPH. Roof rails and roof trim loosen or blow off. Sunroof drains clog and send water into the cabin, and one headliner had mold behind it. Single reports describe the hood flying up while driving, a gap between body and frame, and cracking panels next to the windows. Some owners found their VIN excluded from a trim recall.

  • Brakes142 crashes

Software added with the rear axle bolt recall makes the electric parking brake release late, so the car jerks forward or backward when shifted into gear, and owners describe collisions and near misses. One car rolled down an incline while in park with the parking brake set. Other reports cover brakes that suddenly lose stopping power, rear wheels locking, a sticking pedal traced to a failed power brake booster on back order, an ABS module replacement that did not cure the problem, and harsh braking from adaptive cruise.

  • Seats81 crash

Second-row seats slide or fold forward unexpectedly while driving, sometimes with children in them, and the recall repair has been held up by unavailable parts. Third-row power seats freeze partly folded or can lock and pin a passenger, and one dealer called a failed seat control unit a known issue after the warranty ran out. In one crash report, both front seats dropped fully reclined in a rear-end collision. Other reports describe a front passenger seat heater causing burns and a loose, rattling second-row captain's chair.

  • Airbags53 crashes

Deploying airbags cause burns and serious injuries in two crash reports, including eye injuries to a passenger after a deer strike. An airbag warning light comes on and then clears, leaving a stored code that one dealer struggled to diagnose and tied to a wiring harness and a driver's seat airbag fault. One owner found cracked clips leaving the dashboard unattached to the frame. Another crash report in this category describes sudden acceleration at a stop light rather than an airbag failure.

In owners' own words

Excerpts from complaints Explorer owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.

Transmission
While our 2021 Ford Explorer with 47,000 miles to work the vehicle warning light came on stating the vehicle was overheated and shut down. We allowed the vehicle to cool for 20 minutes as recommended by the owners manual and then restarted the vehicle which immediately overheated again. We had the vehicle towed to the local dealer who diagnosed the issue as coolant in the oil forcing a replacement of the engine and coolant systems.

Filed with NHTSA, June 2025

Transmission
Rear differential/axle bolt broke, destroying other parts and making vehicle unsafe at the moment and then inoperable. Vehicle had previously had the recall work done for this exact issue prior to any issues/damage. Dealership is repairing the vehicle under warranty, but made sure to tell us that this is a known issue and the only true way to “fix” the issue is to install an aftermarket brace (at our cost).

Filed with NHTSA, January 2026

Electrical
Got it in the car and pushed the push start button. The cars engine turned over only half way and started to restart and turn over multiple times even though the motor was running halfway. This went on for 15 minutes until i opened up the hood and looked down and after a couple minutes the engine seized and turned off and started smoking, shortly after started on fire from the bottom of the engine. The fire went on for 10 minutes until we turned it off.

Filed with NHTSA, March 2022

Electrical
Every 6 months, the rear cameras, cross traffic sensors and blind spot warning go out and completely stop functioning. I take it to the dealer tland they keep it for 1-2 weeks and eventually replace a fuse and send it home. This has happened four times. No one will actually correct the root cause ti the issue. It's going on its third week in the shop this time.

Filed with NHTSA, July 2023

Backup camera
I had the safety recall 21V735000 performed on October 12, 2021. Within 2 days the same problem of rear-view backup camera blue screen recurred, just as it did before the recall. The problem happens in about 1/3 of trips. Once the blue screen occurs, it doesn't go away until powering off the vehicle, waiting a few minutes, and then upon powering the vehicle on the rear backup camera might work again for a while, but will usually break again the same day.

Filed with NHTSA, October 2021

Backup camera
The rear camera has not worked since the vehicle was purchased in spring of 2021. It has now been "repaired" 3 times based on open recalls. however the issue is a known issue and can not be fixed. We have now been told they will.nees to replace the camera which is on indefinite backorder. This is a huge vehicle safety issue Ford is aware of and yet not one of their alleged recalls actually resolves this serious issue.

Filed with NHTSA, March 2023

Engine
Vehicle began smoking after a cold start at around 9000 miles. Dealer confirmed the issue was happening and the engine was replaced, but the smoking problem remains. No warning lamps, indicators, or DTCs have been thrown to help in diagnostic. Thus far, there has been no safety impact due to the issue.

Filed with NHTSA, September 2022

Engine
A police officer complained of a strong odor of exhaust coming through the hvac vents. Officer complained of a light dizziness feeling. Suv was grounded from service. Complaint was verified. Upon opening of the hood a odor of exhaust gas was smelled on the right side of the motor. No visible leaks could be heard or seen. Suv was driven to our local Ford dealer for repair.

Fix: Ford will notify owners, and dealers will remove and replace the right hand motor mount fasteners, free of charge. The recall began February 3, 2021. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 20S72.
