Which Atlas is it?
EPA figures for each version of the 2021 Volkswagen Atlas. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.
| Version | Drive | EPA rating |
|---|---|---|
| 2.0L 4-cyl | AWD, FWD | 22 mpg |
| 3.6L 6-cyl | AWD, FWD | 19–20 mpg |
- The 2021 Volkswagen Atlas was sold in two versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
- Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Atlas that averages well under the EPA 19 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.
Check the odometer against these mileages
Owners report these failures starting around the mileages below. A car inside one of these ranges deserves a closer look at that part, or records showing it was already fixed.

LED daytime running light failure
45,000–80,000 miles
Why these checks: what owners reported
NHTSA complaints for the 2021 Volkswagen Atlas, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.
Electrical1801 crash
A failing door wiring harness drives most of these reports. The car wrongly senses an open door, rear windows roll down on their own, the parking brake engages while moving, warnings flood the dash, and the engine can shut off in traffic. Onset is often early, between 2,000 and 18,000 miles. Dealers tie it to a door harness recall but often report no fix yet and parts waits of months. One fire-related report describes smoke from a door and total power loss at highway speed. Other complaints cover start/stop stalls, false parking sensor alerts and dead headlights.
Airbags7611 crashes
Two opposite failures show up. In some frontal, side and rear-end crashes, the airbags do not deploy at all. In others, side and curtain airbags fire after a low-speed curb strike or with no impact, startling the driver and causing loss of control. These reports include 11 crashes and 7 injuries, including a concussion. Several owners cite an earlier recall on the deployment sensor and question whether their repair worked. A smaller group reports an airbag warning light with no impact, plus long repair delays because the wrong parts were shipped.
Engine53No crashes
Stalling at low speed is the dominant pattern. The car cuts out when slowing for a light, pulling away or parking, often with a message to start it manually. The driver then has to shift to park and restart in the road. It happens with auto start/stop on or off, and dealers often find no fault code or replace the battery without fixing it. Early failures include bad fuel injectors and fuel leaks with an EPC light and limp mode within the first few thousand miles. There are also evap system codes and coolant leaks that need water pump replacement.
These four reports are mixed. The fire-related one describes a burning rubber smell and smoke from under the hood, followed by dash alarms. Another describes a lasting burning odor in the cabin that dealers call normal, linked to breathing problems. A third car needed its fuel injection system replaced at about 9,000 miles. The last involves heavy coolant use, a coolant smell inside, a check engine light and coolant leaking even after the cooling system was replaced.
Brakes451 crash
Loud grinding, squealing and metal-on-metal noise is the main complaint. It is often worst at low speed, in reverse, on hills, or on the first few stops after the car sits. Dealers usually call it normal or say no improved replacement part exists, and replaced brakes at 10,000 or 19,500 miles bring the noise back. Some report a pulsing or sinking pedal and a faulty brake booster message with weak stopping. A separate group describes the car braking and setting the parking brake on its own, tied to the door harness recall, including one rear-end crash.
Exterior lights42No crashes
LED daytime running light strips burn out, sometimes on both sides, usually between 45,000 and 72,000 miles and often just past warranty. A few full headlight failures appear too. The strip cannot be replaced by itself, so the dealer replaces the entire headlight assembly, and some quotes add cruise control reprogramming. Quoted costs run from about $1,000 to $2,000 per side. Extended warranty coverage has been denied, and some owners report assemblies on back order. There is no warning light before the failure.
Automatic emergency braking14No crashes
Automatic emergency braking engages with nothing ahead, at speeds from 8 to 70 mph. The car brakes hard or stops completely in traffic, and following cars nearly rear-end it. Several cases come with door contact errors, windows lowering and parking brake warnings, and dealers trace them to the wiring harness. Dealers often cannot reproduce the problem and say no fix exists, and some advise turning off Front Assist. Other reports describe the front radar quitting in heavy rain, and remote start disabling collision warning and cruise control.
Transmission13No crashes
Stalls hit in parking lots, drive-thrus, tight turns and at lights, followed by a "start engine manually" prompt. Owners say it happens even with start/stop disabled. Hesitation is common too: the car does nothing when the pedal is pressed from a stop, then lurches forward. Some report surging and violent shifts around 30 to 40 mph, harsh downshifts and a racing idle. Dealers often find no code. The fixes they do try include a fuel sensor, a battery and throttle body cleaning, and owners point to the vapor canister. One report describes a broken bevel box from a faulty CV axle.
Seats4No crashes
Second-row captain's chairs and bench seats lurch forward without warning under braking. Children in car seats are thrown into the seat ahead. The 3 injuries include a fractured leg and loosened teeth. In some cases the latch indicator showed the seat as locked. In another, a third-row passenger pulled the access lever on the chair while the car was moving. Owners note that nothing warns the driver when a seat is not secured. The volume is small, but the injury rate is high.
In owners' own words
Excerpts from complaints Atlas owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.
My passenger side LED daytime running light failed. We just crossed over 50k miles. This is a 1300 part. After reading online it seems this is a major issue with these vehicles and around this mileage. This appears to be something that needs to be investigated and the manufacturer should have to cover under recall. It’s likely not a coincidence there are this many people reporting the same issue on the same vehicle models/years.
Filed with NHTSA, December 2024
LED daytime running lights went out a few weeks ago at the same time, then yesterday both headlights went out at the same time as well. There have been no damages or wrecks in my vehicle and I am the only owner. There are no warning lights and according to the MyVW app, everything is fine. I cannot see well while driving at night anymore and this will cost me $2,000 to replace at only 60,000 miles.

Vehicle went in for service on the airbags. The dealer has been sent the incorrect OEM part 5 times from Volkswagen parts dealers.Volkswagen Cstomer Care sent email confirmation that the part is correct, dealer is stating part is not correct. The part delivered is a different part number than what is on the packaging. The vehicle has been in the shop since 12/8/2025. The invoice for the part the first time it was ordered is dated 12/29/2025.

My air bag warning light is on, I took this to a dealer service facility and they said it is a wiring harness failure. Upon doing more research on this I find this harness failure has caused, the parking brake to be applied while driving, the windows will go down on their own. VW customer tells me this is safe to drive, they have no fix and their newest vehicles have this possible fault. This vehicle can not be safe to be driving on the highway.

This is the second Volkswagen Atlas we have purchased after the first had the exact same code P2047 Evap system issues. This Atlas is brand new and it only took 3,000 miles for it to start having system issues. During driving with cruise control enabled the vehicle kicked itself out of cruise control and deactivated the ACC cruise control along with regular cruise and disabled the remote start with a check engine light.

My car only has 58,000 and my car is leaking coolant and I was advised I need to replace the water pump at $15,000. I see there was a settlement already for Volkswagen’s however, my Volkswagen Atlas cross port is not included although it is in the same year as those cars with the settlement it needs to be added so that way the warranty can be extended by 80,000 miles.

Brakes had to be replaced at only 19,500 miles and now the car has 38,000 miles and they sound horrible again. The entire time I’ve had this car the brakes have made squealing and grinding noises. The VW dealer couldn’t access VW brakes last year due to shortage so put after market rotors on my car without my permission. I had a loaner and they called and told me my car was “ready” out of the blue. Horrible experiences. Will never buy a VW again.

While driving at highway speeds at random the vehicle would brake on its own engage the parking brake and roll windows down. We tried to have the vehicle looked at Boise Volkswagen and they refused to schedule and inspect the vehicle. We even advised the dealer of an open safety campaign/recall and they also still refused to service the vehicle. Unfortunately next closest dealership is 157 miles away from our home.
