Which Explorer is it?
EPA figures for each version of the 2022 Ford Explorer. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.
| Version | Drive | EPA rating |
|---|---|---|
| 2.3L 4-cylGas | 4WD, RWD | 23–24 mpg |
| 3.0L 6-cylGas | 4WD, RWD | 20–21 mpg |
| 3.3L 6-cylFlex fuel | 4WD | 19 mpg |
| 3.3L 6-cylHybrid | 4WD, RWD | 25–27 mpg |
- The 2022 Ford Explorer was sold in four versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
- On the hybrid, watch for the car moving off on electric power at low speed and for any hybrid system warning on the dash.
- Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Explorer that averages well under the EPA 19 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.
Why these checks: what owners reported
NHTSA complaints for the 2022 Ford Explorer, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.
Transmission492 crashes
Reverse engages late. Reports describe waits of several seconds after selecting Reverse, and the SUV can roll or lunge forward before it catches. Two crash reports involve hitting objects this way. Dealers often call the delay normal, and transmission software reflashes help only for a while. A second pattern is the rear axle bolt fracture covered by recall 23V675000. Owners report long waits for parts, and one says the bolt sheared after the recall repair. Hesitation when accelerating, harsh shifts, and a roaring rear differential with metal shavings also appear.
Electrical261 crash
The SYNC screen goes black or glitches, taking the backup camera and driver-assist controls with it. One APIM module failed almost immediately on a new vehicle. Camera faults are tied to recall 23S23, and some owners waited years for parts. Sunroof shade failures and rattles show up here too. Two reports describe the alternator pulley rubbing through a wiring harness and exposing wire. Other complaints cover heated seats that shut off on the ST, a fogged instrument cluster, and one case of smoke followed by a cabin fire.
Engine101 crash
Power cuts out while driving. In some cases the engine stalls and won't restart, and dealer fixes like a fuel pump module or vapor valve don't always hold. One loss of power in an intersection led to a crash with 4 injured and a totaled vehicle. Several reports describe catastrophic engine failure with no warning lights. Others mention camshaft and timing chain failure at 38,000 miles that came back after repair, and coolant leaking into the cylinders that required a new engine. Strong fuel or exhaust smells also appear.
Backup camera92 crashes
The rearview camera shows a blue or blank screen, and most reports tie it to recall 23V342000. Many complaints are less about a failure than about recall parts being unavailable, with owners saying the wait has gone on too long. Two crashes involve rear alerts that warned too late or not at all, one ending in an out-of-pocket repair bill. One camera failure at 76,000 miles was traced to a failed processing module.
Steering81 crash
Power steering assist drops out with a driver-assist warning, including at highway speed, and a dealer software reset did not cure it. Several owners report the steering wheel moving side to side by itself, and one says it seized while reversing. One crash followed a sudden pull into a guardrail, after which the front wheel assembly was found detached, and the vehicle was totaled. A hybrid owner describes shuddering at 29 to 31 mph that they attribute to the driveshaft.
Airbags74 crashes
Burns from deployed side airbags are the most serious pattern. A police officer needed surgery and skin grafts after thermal burns from the exhaust port, and another driver reports a chemical burn from propellant. Other crash reports describe airbags that did not deploy along with a seat belt that failed to lock, and a knee airbag that partly deployed and released a substance that cut a passenger. Non-crash complaints include a bulging passenger airbag, an impact sensor warning, and an occupancy module that misreads seat belt status.
Brakes52 crashes
Brakes fail to engage or lose pressure. One report describes the pedal going unresponsive at low speed, leading to a crash with 4 injured. Another owner had repeated low-speed bumps when the brakes did not engage right away. One driver saw every brake warning light up at once, with ABS and the parking brake failing and stopping distance sharply longer. A dealer could not reproduce that fault. Other complaints concern the rear axle bolt recall and a pedal cover slipping off on a police unit.
Automatic emergency braking41 crash
Pre-collision braking misses vehicles crossing from the right and gives no forward collision alert. One car crept forward into the car ahead while stopped with auto brake hold on. One owner says the rear axle bolt recall fix was a software update that sets the parking brake automatically in Park. They report the car lunging forward or backward when pulling away afterward and call the fix a poor substitute for repairing the hardware.
In owners' own words
Excerpts from complaints Explorer owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.
I have received six (6) notifications of a power train failure, which causes the vehicle to "shudder" at highway speeds. The first issue took place 09/01/2023, and the last was on 11/1/2023. The vehicle then continues to operate normally. If the vehicle is turned off and then on again, the light clears. I took the vehicle to Tamiami Ford for service. They reported that they can see that their is an issue, but are unable to diagnose it.
Filed with NHTSA, November 2023
Transmission fails to smoothly shift, vehicle delays going in reverse after driving causing delays to park and shakes while downshifting. Drivers anticipate the vehicle to be able to backup sooner and can cause accident with delays. Safety 360 display and rear view camera goes completely out, inverts, and has delay when functions. Vehicle has full power failure while driving and can take 10 minutes to turn back on, happened twice.
Filed with NHTSA, December 2023
I was driving (at a fairly low speed) recently when my vehicle began driving erratically. I pulled over and noticed that there was smoke in the passenger compartment. I exited the vehicle and walked to the passenger side (out of traffic) and opened the passenger door to retrieve my cell phone. At that point there was a burst of flame upon opening the door, and the fire quickly spread to the passenger compartment.
Filed with NHTSA, April 2023
The dash cluster screen goes in and out. Randomly began and got more frequent as time went on. This screen shows ones speed, gas, cruise control, lane assist, mileage and which vehicle mode it is in. Once the blacked out screen appears driver has no indication of these features. Evaluated by dealership and had to replace and reprogram the entire dash cluster at an out of pocket cost of $1846.

2022 ford explorer with less than 100,000 miles on it. Started getting engine shudders and a check engine light. It’s currently in the shop and I’m being told by the shop and a third party adjuster that I need a whole new engine because there is coolant leaking into the cylinders.
Filed with NHTSA, October 2025
The rear traffic warning did not alert timely, resulting in a fender bender in a parking lot. I have dash cam footage with audio supporting that it did not beep until it was too late.
