Which Traverse is it?

EPA figures for each version of the 2021 Chevrolet Traverse. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.

VersionDriveEPA rating
3.6L 6-cylAWD, FWD20–21 mpg
  • Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Traverse that averages well under the EPA 20 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Check the odometer against these mileages

Owners report these failures starting around the mileages below. A car inside one of these ranges deserves a closer look at that part, or records showing it was already fixed.

  • Brake squeal and grinding

    1,247–15,000 miles

  • Exhaust pipe and converter failure

    33,000–74,000 miles

  • Alternator failure and stalling

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2021 Chevrolet Traverse, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Electrical20No crashes

Charging system failures dominate. A "Service Battery Charging System" or "Vehicle May Stall" warning appears, often followed by "Battery Saver Active". The engine can then shut off while driving, sometimes in traffic or at highway speed, taking power steering and hazard lights with it. A new battery rarely fixes it. The usual repair is an alternator, and some cars need a second one. Failures cluster around 40,000 to 44,000 miles. Other reports describe a false "Shift to Park" message that keeps the car from shutting off and drains the battery, plus blank radio or instrument displays.

  • Engine10No crashes

Most of these reports are about the exhaust. The front exhaust pipe separates from its mounting bracket or cracks, which brings a rattle, a loud exhaust note, and fumes or an odor inside the cabin. Some cases also trigger a check engine light and a catalytic converter failure. GM special coverage addresses the front pipe. Owners say the rear pipe fails too and is not covered, and some vehicles fall outside the bulletin. Reported mileages run from about 33,000 to 74,000. One separate report describes low oil and an oil warning light at 41,000 miles soon after a service.

Exhaust and catalytic converter failures make up most of these reports. A loud noise, clicking under acceleration, or an exhaust odor leads to a diagnosis of a broken front exhaust pipe or converter, often with a check engine light on. Some owners say the under-hood exhaust pipe failed again after being replaced, with one report at 36,000 miles. A separate report describes the vehicle briefly lurching as if stopping while on cruise control at 71 mph, followed by a burning smell.

  • Transmission6No crashes

Shifts skip, shudder, or come late on the 9-speed automatic transmission, and the vehicle labors on even slight grades. Reverse sometimes engages only after a delay. Problems can start as early as 1,085 miles and get worse with age. One report describes torque converter replacement followed by a transmission failure caused by a gasket leak. The false "Shift to Park" warning shows up here as well. A driveshaft bolt that came out at 45 mph split the shaft and caused a loss of control.

  • Brakes6No crashes

Noise is the main complaint. Brakes squeak, squeal, or grind on new or low-mileage cars, with reports at 1,247 and 15,000 miles. Dealers often call the noise normal for ceramic pads or say they are waiting on a fix from the manufacturer, so many cars go unrepaired. Other owners describe uneven, erratic braking from day one. One case involves brake fluid leaking at the wheels and an empty reservoir within weeks of purchase, with the grinding getting steadily worse.

  • Steering3No crashes

The core issue is lost steering assist. A "Steering assist reduced" or power steering warning appears, making the vehicle harder to control in traffic or at speed. Dealer fixes range from a software update to a full steering rack replacement. In one case the electronic stability control failed along with the steering. Another report links the reduced steering and engine power to a failing alternator, which nearly caused a collision at highway speed.

  • Airbags22 crashes

Both complaints involve crashes with injuries where the airbags did not work as expected. In a front-end collision, no airbags deployed at all. In the other crash, the steering wheel airbag came out but did not inflate, and no warning lights appeared beforehand. Both reports also mention brake problems, one before the crash and one after the impact. Two complaints are too few to show a broad pattern, but both failures are serious.

  • Acceleration and cruise control21 crash

Both reports describe a vehicle that did not respond as expected to the driver. One crash with injuries followed unintended acceleration that the brakes could not stop. Cruise control was off and no warning appeared first. The other report describes hard shuddering and jerking on takeoff that hurt passengers' necks and nearly caused accidents. With only 2 complaints, no wider pattern is visible, but both involve loss-of-control risk.

  • Suspension2No crashes

Rear suspension links break. In one report, the right rear upper and lower toe links failed at 29702 miles with no warning, and the vehicle pulled hard and swerved under braking. In another, a broken rear sway bar link caused a loud clunk on right turns and made handling unsafe. Only 2 complaints are on file, but both carry loss-of-control risk.

In owners' own words

Excerpts from complaints Traverse owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.

Electrical
Warning on dash to check charging system. Driving on highway, all lights on dash started lighting up and going crazy and then everything on dash completely shut off while I was driving. Car eventually stalled. Car has less than 40k miles and only 3 years old. Brought it to dealership and they said it needs new alternator and battery.

Filed with NHTSA, March 2024

Electrical
3 times in 5 days, 2021Traverse completely shut off. 2 of those times were in a busy intersection. I couldn’t even turn my flashers on and had to manually unlock my door to get out. Fortunately the third time was in my driveway. I called AAA to tow it to dealer. This is a severe safety issue and hopefully will be covered under my warranty and the extended bumper to bumper warranty.

Filed with NHTSA, November 2024

Transmission
With just 1,085 miles on a new 2021 Chevrolet Traverse RS the 9 speed automatic transmission began to fail. It feels as if it skips and there is a distinct shudder as it shifts in the higher gears. The transmission also appears to labor as the vehicle ascends even the smallest change in grade. Research of these issues shows its a noted prblem with the GM 9 speed automatic transmission.

Filed with NHTSA, June 2021

Transmission
Car was late shifting into gear. Taken to dealership and replaced tourque cpnverters for 3800. Car gets fluids checked 4,000 miles later transmition is shot fue to leak from gasket on transmition...

Filed with NHTSA, April 2025

Brakes
At only 15,000 miles the brakes are squeaking as if they would on extended mileage brakes that require replacement. These are practically brand new and should not be making this sound.

Filed with NHTSA, January 2023

Brakes
Since I bought this car new the brakes have been squeaking and when I took it to the dealer they said they need about this problem but there was nothing that they could do about it since the manufacture has not given them a bulletin on this model of vehicle yet.

Where the 2021 fits in the Traverse's history

Redesigns and mid-cycle updates change what can go wrong.

The 2021 is the fourth model year of the Traverse's second generation (2018–2024).

Chevrolet updated the Traverse for 2022, so a 2021 does not have those changes.

What changed for 2022 (not on a 2021)

  • Grille similar to redesigned Suburban/Tahoe
  • Thin LED headlights and tail lights
  • New daytime running lights with integrated LED turn signals
  • New interior seating options
  • Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto

Recalls to confirm (3)

Recall repairs are free at any Chevrolet dealer, but the seller may never have had them done. Check each campaign number against the VIN.

  1. 22V210000AirbagsMar 2022

General Motors, LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2020-2022 Chevrolet Traverse and 2021-2022 Buick Enclave vehicles. The harness connector to the left or right side roof rail air bag may have incompatible electrical terminals, which could prevent the air bags from deploying in a crash.

Risk: Roof rail air bags that do not deploy as intended increase the risk of injury in a crash.

Fix: Dealers will replace the harness connector to the roof rail air bags, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed on April 29, 2022. Owners may contact Buick customer service at 1-800-521-7300 or Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020. GM's number for this recall is N212352140.

  2. 21V817000TransmissionOct 2021

Braun Corporation (Braun) is recalling certain 2020-2021 Chevrolet Traverse wheelchair accessible vehicles with Power In-floor Ramp conversion. The screw and clip that hold the inner wheel-well plastic shroud in place may chafe against the transmission case, possibly resulting in a transmission fluid leak.

Risk: A transmission fluid leak can cause a loss of drive power, increasing the risk of a crash. In addition, a leak in the presence of an ignition source increases the risk of a fire.

Fix: Dealers will replace the screw and clip, and inspect for signs of contact with the transmission, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed November 29, 2021. Owners may contact Braun customer service at 1-800-488-0359.
