Which Passport is it?
EPA figures for each version of the 2021 Honda Passport. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.
| Version | Drive | EPA rating |
|---|---|---|
| 3.5L 6-cyl | AWD, FWD | 21–22 mpg |
- Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Passport that averages well under the EPA 21 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.
Why these checks: what owners reported
NHTSA complaints for the 2021 Honda Passport, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.
Transmission211 crash
The transmission drops into neutral on its own, sometimes at highway speed and sometimes while backing up, with a "Transmission Problem" warning. Other reports describe sudden downshifts during merges, hesitation in turns where the engine revs but the car does not accelerate, and hard clunking shifts between 4th and 5th on the ZF9 nine-speed. Dealers often find no stored codes and make no repair. One problem began under 12K miles. Separate reports cite rod bearing failure that needed a new engine, and a shift-by-wire car that could not be moved without a special Honda tool.
Automatic emergency braking201 crash
The automatic emergency braking system slams on the brakes for no real threat. It often happens when the car approaches a curve with oncoming traffic, and sometimes at highway speeds. Drivers describe near rear-end collisions, and one reports neck and shoulder injuries. Dealers offer no fix, and many owners switch the system off. Other reports describe the camera or radar failing, which shuts down every driver-assist feature, with replacement parts sold out. One crash involved adaptive cruise control that warned too late to stop the car.
Electrical192 crashes
The engine fails to restart after Auto Idle Stop shuts it off at lights or in traffic. Sometimes the car slips into neutral and stays stuck for a minute or longer. New batteries, starters, and software updates often fail to cure it. Other complaints include infotainment screens stuck in restart loops, crackling speakers, muffled call audio traced to cabling, and the instrument panel going blank at speed. Two crashes are linked to sudden total power loss or a frozen system followed by brake failure. Some owners also report waiting on recall parts.
Brakes161 crash
Most reports here describe phantom automatic braking. A BRAKE alert flashes, the steering wheel shakes, and the car slows hard with nothing ahead, in one case from 70 to about 50 mph. A smaller group reports a brake pedal that sinks to the floor, needs pumping, or locks the wheels, including one garage crash after a sudden surge. Warped rotors cause steering shake under braking by 10k to 15k miles, and Honda treats this as wear. One independent inspection found loose master cylinder and booster bolts.
Engine81 crash
Knocking at low rpm on a warm engine turns out to be crankshaft bearing wear. Two reports place it around 22k miles and link it to Honda's V6 crankshaft recalls, and in one case the noise came back after a bearing was replaced. Other owners report Auto Idle Stop failures that leave the engine dead for up to 5 minutes, sudden power loss with emissions and transmission warnings that required a tow, and an antitheft fault that shut the engine off. One crash involved the engine racing to full throttle while parking.
Wipers and visibility6No crashes
The power-folding side mirrors stop working, and the fault returns soon after the dealer replaces the wiring. Other complaints concern recall campaign 23V174000, where owners are told the repair part is not yet available and the wait is called unreasonable. In one case the owner's mirror fault turned out not to be covered by that recall. One complaint includes no details beyond an attached document.
Side mirrors replaced under recall 23V-174 come back distorted, like a fun-house mirror, and the replacement for the replacement is just as bad. Another report describes the driver's mirror vibrating so hard at 70 mph that lane changes become difficult, and the dealer declines to replace it. Separately, a windshield cracks on its own on a cold morning at low speed, and Honda refuses to cover the repair.
Airbags31 crash
These reports are mostly about recall delays, not failures. Owners received notice of recall campaign 24V064000, but dealers say the repair part is not yet available, and several call the wait unreasonable. One separate complaint describes a passenger seat weight sensor that still does not work after replacement following a collision repair. That owner was sent back and forth between the dealer and the body shop with no answer on whether wiring or the airbag system is at fault.
Steering31 crash
A sudden lockup after turning a corner leaves the car impossible to steer in one report, which ends in a crash. In another, five safety-system warnings come on at once, and the dealer traces them to a failed control chip that also governs power steering and brakes. A third complaint describes false forward collision warnings set off by oncoming cars over 2+ years, with no software fix offered. Reports are few, but the lockup and control failures carry a real loss-of-control risk.
In owners' own words
Excerpts from complaints Passport owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.
I was driving along at 65 miles an hour when the car randomly threw itself into neutral. I turned the car off restarted it drive a little bit. It continued to happen over and over and it usually does not matter on the speed. After the transmission replacement, the transmission still continues to hit hard on third and fourth gear..

- Automatic braking system flashes warnings for no reason, with no cars around me - Parking break hasn’t taken a handful of times - No collision warning when parking brake didn’t take, front end is now damaged ** I have dash cam proof I hit the parking brake before I collided with the vehicle in front of me in the school line. Husband glued the grill pieces together to keep them from overlapping.

One day the lights just started flashing. Took to dealer and was told that someone must have backed into me and would be about $2500 to replace the camera (which is behind the windshield). Occasionally it will function but clearly seems to be a malfunction. In research online there appear to be many others that have experienced the same issue - can’t just be a coincidence. Shouldn’t happen on a reliable four/five year old car

I’ve had several incidents where my vehicle has forced me to a screeching hault when not needed. Most recently it did, and I was almost rear ended by a large UHaul truck while my baby was in the backseat. This is extremely dangerous. This anti-collision system activates while on turns and when nothing else is happening around the vehicle. This is a safety feature that makes the vehicle more unsafe.

The vehicle infotainment system froze. Several minutes later after driving, I pressed the brakes but they did not function. The vehicle would not stop and crashed into the vehicle in front of me. Emergency braking did not engage or otherwise show signs of activation. After turning off the car and dealing with the accident, I restarted the vehicle and the brakes and infotainment system operated normally.

The Radio started to "crackle or skip" while using apple CarPlay. The crackle noise continued after audio had been paused. Our safety was at risk because the noise was very distracting. I needed to take my hand off the wheel to unplug my phone to stop the noise. The equipment has not been inspected. The only sign of failure were small cracks that were much more intermittent, compared to constant crackling that I am experiencing now.

Car will brake when no one is near sometimes jamming on brakes. I reported it to dealer 2 times. They said no software updates avalable and no codes showing a problem. I left the dealer and drove less than 2 miles down the road when the brakes can on again. I returned to the dealer again when they informed me there is nothing they can do. Maybe I have a fly on the sensor setting it off. I replied don't try to BS me, I'm a CDL Driver for over 40 years.

The passport flashes BRAKE and steering wheel shakes for no reason. I’ll be driving down the road nothing near and it does this. A few times it’s actually applied the brakes. Thank goodness no one was behind me as it potentially could have caused an accident. This occurs daily. Especially if I am driving on a 2 lane road

Where the 2021 fits in the Passport's history
Redesigns and mid-cycle updates change what can go wrong.
The 2021 is the third model year of the Passport's third generation (2019–2025).
Honda updated the Passport for 2022, so a 2021 does not have those changes.
What changed for 2022 (not on a 2021)
- New front end design
- Introduction of TrailSport trim
