Which RAV4 is it?

EPA figures for each version of the 2025 Toyota RAV4. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.

VersionDriveEPA rating
2.5L 4-cylGasAWD, FWD30 mpg
2.5L 4-cylHybridAWD39 mpg
2.5L 4-cylPlug-in hybridAWD600 mi range
  • The 2025 Toyota RAV4 was sold in three versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
  • On the hybrid, watch for the car moving off on electric power at low speed and for any hybrid system warning on the dash.
  • Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A RAV4 that averages well under the EPA 30 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Check the odometer against these mileages

Owners report these failures starting around the mileages below. A car inside one of these ranges deserves a closer look at that part, or records showing it was already fixed.

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2025 Toyota RAV4, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Electrical7No crashes

Hybrid system faults cap speed at 60 mph, kill the accelerator, and leave the car stopped on the highway with a locked steering wheel, needing a tow. The 12-volt battery is a recurring complaint. Owners describe chronic undercharging, and in one case a drained battery locked the owner out of the cabin and out of the trunk compartment holding the jumper cables. One owner is still waiting for parts for recall campaign 25V595000. A failing front camera also disables cruise control. One report lists an injury.

  • Wheels and tires5No crashes

Sidewalls separate from the tread, split at the shoulder, or crack without warning, and in one case a tire came off the rim. Most of these failures happen at 60 to 70 mph with no puncture or road hazard found. Two happened between 4,397 and 5,343 miles. The reports name both Dunlop and Michelin tires. A sudden blowout at these speeds carries a real risk of losing control. In one more case, a flat turned out to be caused by a stone inside the tire.

  • Body and structure5No crashes

Sunroof glass shatters with a loud bang while the car is moving and the roof is closed. The power liftgate closes with more force than a person can hold back, and it stops only when pressed at one narrow spot near the center of its edge. That poses a clear hazard to children and pets. Owners also report water coming in through all the doors after rain, early rust that the dealer offered only to paint over, and body panels that flex and click under light pressure.

  • Wipers and visibility4No crashes

A warped, distorted windshield makes some drivers dizzy and nauseous and gives them headaches, and a replacement windshield can show the same flaw. The problem appears in the first few hundred miles, as early as 271 miles. Toyota has received multiple calls about it. One report describes a stress fracture in the windshield. Another describes the multifunction display failing to dim at night despite the auto setting. The screen glares at the driver, who then has to adjust it by hand while driving.

  • Transmission4No crashes

The accelerator gives no response for a couple of seconds when pulling away from a stop, then the car lurches forward. That can leave a driver stalled or creeping into traffic. Two reports describe the car rolling freely. In one, pressing the power button in Drive or Reverse shifts to Neutral without setting the parking brake. In the other, a remote-started car shuts off while already in gear. Hybrid models also jerk at low speed when the driver lifts off the accelerator, reported around 3,400 miles.

  • Backup camera3No crashes

The backup camera screen goes blank or flickers while reversing, and the display also shuts off at random while driving forward. One owner whose VIN was left out of a related recall reports the same screen failure, starting about a month after buying the car new. The digital rearview mirror shows a hazy, foggy image at night but stays clear in daylight. Cleaning the rear window and the camera lens does not fix it, and the dealer called it normal operation.

  • Exterior lights3No crashes

The headlight beam has a hard cutoff at the top and does not reach far enough down the road. That makes winding rural roads hard to drive safely at night, and drivers slow well below the speed limit. A related report describes a dark band about a third of the way up the windshield at night that hides street signs. The dealer called it normal, but Toyota's head technician could not see the signs in the owner's photos either. A third report notes the backup camera is slow to light up at startup.

  • Steering21 crash

After a shift from reverse to drive, the wheel can lock and refuse to return to center, with no warning light beforehand. In one case this caused a collision with another car. The dealer confirmed a steering wheel angle fault, but the car sat at the dealership with no fix. Another report describes the car vibrating and shutting itself off while held at a stop in heavy rain. It showed a "Steering Power Low" message and would not restart until after several attempts.

In owners' own words

Excerpts from complaints RAV4 owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.

Electrical
Check engine light came on as well as hybrid malfunction message. While on the highway could not accel or go past 60 mph, gas pedal would then not work and speed went down, I pulled car over to breakdown lane and car abruptly stopped and would not move. Many warnings flashed and car needed to be towed. Temperature rose and ignition messages came up, steering wheel locked and car was not drivable.

Electrical
component: main engine wiring harness. cause: rodent caused damage: the rodent severely damaged this component and made the vehicle inoperable. fix: required the replacement of this component. insurance covered the 8,500 repair bill (minus deductible). a check engine light appeared eventually.

Wheels and tires
Traveling on interstate, 60 mph. All of a sudden, I heard a loud noise followed by a thump. Managed to get off the exit and pulled over onto the shoulder. Noticed the sidewall had separated from the tread of the tire. 5343 miles on vehicle. Original equipment tires.

Filed with NHTSA, January 2026

Wheels and tires
Sidewall randomly cracked while traveling late at night on sparsely populated interstate. No debris on road or potholes encountered to explain why this occurred.

Filed with NHTSA, February 2026

Body and structure
I discovered early rust formation on my vehicle shortly after purchase. The dealership only proposed painting over the rust instead of investigating the underlying cause. This may indicate a factory-related structural defect and could pose a long-term safety risk. I am requesting an investigation.

Filed with NHTSA, November 2025

Body and structure
When driving our Rav 4 we heard loud bang type noise. We stopped and pulled over and looked all around the Rav 4 and didn't see anything. When I checked the roof I found our sunroof had shattered. The sunroof was closed at the time. No one was injured at the time.

Filed with NHTSA, January 2026

Wipers and visibility
The multifunction display does not automatically dim at night as indicated in the manual and in the settings. The display stays at the level manually set. This means that it can be so bright at night that the driver is blinded to the road ahead which could lead to an accident. It is very difficult and unsafe to try to dim it manually while driving.

Recalls to confirm (2)

Recall repairs are free at any Toyota dealer, but the seller may never have had them done. Check each campaign number against the VIN.

  1. 25V744000Backup cameraOct 2025

Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain 2022-2026 Toyota, Lexus, and Subaru Solterra vehicles equipped with a Panoramic View Monitor (PVM) system. Please see the recall report for a complete list of models. A software error may cause the rearview camera to freeze or display a blank screen when the vehicle is in reverse. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 111, "Rear Visibility.".

Risk: A rearview camera that fails to display an image can reduce the driver's view behind the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.

Fix: Dealers will update the parking assist software, free of charge. Owner letters were mailed January 2, 2026. Owners may contact Toyota's customer service at 1-800-331-4331. Toyota's numbers for this recall are 25TB13 and 25LB06. Subaru's number for this recall is WRE25.
