Which RAV4 is it?

EPA figures for each version of the 2024 Toyota RAV4. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.

VersionDriveEPA rating
2.5L 4-cylGasAWD, FWD30 mpg
2.5L 4-cylHybridAWD39 mpg
2.5L 4-cylPlug-in hybridAWD600 mi range
  • The 2024 Toyota RAV4 was sold in three versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
  • On the hybrid, watch for the car moving off on electric power at low speed and for any hybrid system warning on the dash.
  • Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A RAV4 that averages well under the EPA 30 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Check the odometer against these mileages

Owners report these failures starting around the mileages below. A car inside one of these ranges deserves a closer look at that part, or records showing it was already fixed.

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2024 Toyota RAV4, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Steering222 crashes

Stalling after driving in rain is the dominant report, usually while idling in park or stopped. Before the stall the car shakes, RPM surges between 1k and 2k, and the dash reads "Engine Stopped, Steering Power Low." Many cars will not restart for 5 to 30 minutes, then run normally, and dealers often find nothing. Some owners report repeat events and tows. Reports range from new cars to about 44,780 miles. A separate report describes a constant pull to the right starting near 12,000 miles that repeated alignments did not fix.

  • Electrical15No crashes

Instrument clusters and center screens go blank, hiding speed, fuel, and warning lights. Many reports cite recall 25V595000 and say the repair part is not yet available. Some owners were told not to drive the car until it is fixed. Other complaints include CarPlay and Bluetooth disconnecting repeatedly, wipers and the radio switching on and off by themselves, and a failed front camera that costs about $2000 and disables driver aids. Owners also report a battery dying in cold weather at 60 mph and repeated stalling after rain.

  • Body and structure11No crashes

Hoods flutter and flex while driving. The movement is visible at 40 mph and worse on the highway, and it throws strobe-like sun glare into the driver's eyes. Dealers adjusted the rubber stoppers or said no recall applies, and repeat visits often fail to fix it. Several reports describe the moonroof exploding with a gunshot-like bang while driving, with no object involved, at speeds from 5 mph up to highway pace. One occupant was injured, and warranty coverage was denied. Single reports mention false automatic emergency braking and no door courtesy lights.

  • Acceleration and cruise control107 crashes

Sudden unintended acceleration at low speed is the main pattern, usually while parking or pulling into a driveway or car wash. Drivers say the car surged even while they braked, then hit walls, fences, trees, or parked cars. Seven of the 10 complaints involve crashes, with 5 injuries. One car rolled onto its side and others were declared total losses. Reported mileages run from under 300 to about 13,600. Dealer and manufacturer inspections have not found a cause. Other reports describe lost power during left turns and hard false braking on the highway.

  • Airbags107 crashes

Airbags do not deploy in frontal crashes, according to several reports, including impacts with trees and walls. Seven complaints are crash-related, with 5 injuries. Some of these crashes followed what owners describe as sudden acceleration, and two reports say seat belts did not restrain occupants. Other complaints describe the opposite problem: side curtain airbags firing after a minor front impact, and a dash airbag deploying in a parked, locked car. The passenger occupancy indicator reads an adult as a child seat, and the SRS warning light comes on.

  • Brakes93 crashes

Front brakes squeal or squeak under light to moderate braking at low speed, starting between about 10,000 and 28,000 miles. ABS kicks in with a grinding noise on dry pavement over dips or slopes. One owner noticed this within the first few thousand miles. Three crash reports describe the car not stopping, creeping forward, or rolling backward in reverse with the pedal fully pressed. Other reports include a "brake suspended" message during a skid and false automatic braking when pulling into traffic. Dealers often cannot reproduce the problem.

  • Transmission82 crashes

Two crash reports describe sudden acceleration while parking at under 5 mph with the brake pressed. In one, a "Hybrid System Fail" warning had appeared two days earlier. The rain-related stall also shows up here: a "Not ready to drive" message, a shifter stuck in park, and a car that restarts normally later. Other reports describe e-CVT grinding, weak acceleration uphill, and slipping downhill on an AWD hybrid at 13k miles. Owners also report an oil leak dealers could not fix and a car rolling after shutoff while still in Drive.

  • Wipers and visibility6No crashes

Glass fails without an obvious cause. Windshields crack on their own, sometimes appearing to start at the defroster, or split in two after a small stone hit near the wiper sensor mount. Owners also report the back glass and the panoramic moonroof shattering, the moonroof along all 4 edges. One windshield develops a spreading haze inside the glass that makes night driving hard. Water also stays trapped in all four doors after rain or a wash and streaks the side windows for over 24 hours. Dealers tend to blame outside causes.

In owners' own words

Excerpts from complaints RAV4 owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.

Steering
It was raining and we drove about an hour, parked and shutoff car, went into the store, came back out and car would not turn on. Error message that came up was “Engine Stopped Sterring Power Low” This is a brand new car just bought last year. We kept trying to turn car on and error message kept coming up. Waited for tow truck and car ended up turning on. Looked online and it seems a lot of other people are having the same issue in the rain.

Steering
Driving down the highway in the pouring rain. Pulled over because the engine felt like it was about to stall. Whole engine cut off and check engine light came on with “engine stopped - power steering low”. Would act like it wanted to start again but shut back off every time. After about 30 minutes it started back up without any check engine lights or messages. This is the 3rd time its happened. Always in the rain.

Filed with NHTSA, June 2025

Electrical
I was pulling into a parking spot in a parking garage. My foot was off the accretor ready to brake and then the car self accelerated and hit the cement wall. The red brake light came on and I slammed on the brake but the damage was done. The front bumper was cracked on the left side and dented on the right side. There whole front end was scraped and scratched. The collision sensor is damaged

Filed with NHTSA, May 2024

Electrical
The electronic dashboard with speedometer, and information regarding mechanical functions and fuel has gone blank. This recall has been issued however, Toyota does not yet have a fix. They are estimating sometime in December, however no specific date for a fix. I have followed up with the Toyota dealer who stated that I should file a complaint regarding the delay in a fix.

Filed with NHTSA, November 2025

Body and structure
Moon roof spontaneously shattered while driving. No impact from any object caused this, no other vehicles around and vehicle was only at 5 MPH at time of shattering. It’s as if the glass just shattered outwards from inside the cabin of the vehicle. Showered driver with glass and could have caused injury especially if glass fell into eyes.

Filed with NHTSA, January 2024

Body and structure
Hood vibration/fluttering at 40 speed and more at highway speeds, visible shaking even when closed. I took my car to dealer but they said no recalls. No help me with the car issues. That vibration distracted me and made me feel not safety as well as my passengers.

Recalls to confirm (3)

Recall repairs are free at any Toyota dealer, but the seller may never have had them done. Check each campaign number against the VIN.

  1. 25V744000Backup cameraOct 2025

Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain 2022-2026 Toyota, Lexus, and Subaru Solterra vehicles equipped with a Panoramic View Monitor (PVM) system. Please see the recall report for a complete list of models. A software error may cause the rearview camera to freeze or display a blank screen when the vehicle is in reverse. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 111, "Rear Visibility.".

Risk: A rearview camera that fails to display an image can reduce the driver's view behind the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.

Fix: Dealers will update the parking assist software, free of charge. Owner letters were mailed January 2, 2026. Owners may contact Toyota's customer service at 1-800-331-4331. Toyota's numbers for this recall are 25TB13 and 25LB06. Subaru's number for this recall is WRE25.

  2. 25V595000ElectricalSep 2025

Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain 2023-2024 Toyota Venza, 2023-2025 RAV4 Prime, RAV4, Highlander, GR Corolla, Crown, 2024-2025 Lexus TX, LS, Toyota Tacoma, Grand Highlander, and 2025 Lexus RX, Toyota Crown Signia, Camry, RAV 4 Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV), and 4 Runner vehicles. Due to an error in the instrument panel software at vehicle startup, the instrument panel may fail to display vehicle speed, brake system, and tire pressure warning lights.

Risk: An instrument panel display that does not show critical information can increase the risk of a crash or injury.

Fix: Dealers will update the instrument panel software for non-PHEV vehicles, free of charge. For PHEV vehicles, dealers will inspect the instrument panel assembly, and either replace it, or update the software, free of charge. Owner letters were mailed December 5, 2025. Owners may contact Toyota's customer service at 1-800-331-4331. Toyota's numbers for this recall are 25TB08 and 25TA08. Lexus' numbers for this recall are 25LB05 and 25LA05.

  3. 24V911000BrakesDec 2024

Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain 2024 RAV4 and 2025 Lexus NX vehicles. Some of the bolts that secure the front brake caliper and the wheel hub bearing may be loose, which can result in a damaged caliper brake hose or possible wheel detachment.

Risk: A damaged brake line can cause a brake fluid leak, reducing brake performance and increasing the distance required to stop the vehicle. Wheel detachment can result in a loss of vehicle control. Either condition increases the risk of a crash.

Fix: Dealers will inspect and tighten the front brake caliper mounting bracket and hub bearing bolts, as necessary, free of charge. In addition, any damaged components will be replaced, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed January 23, 2025. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-800-331-4331. Toyota's numbers for this recall are 24TA14 and 24LA08.
