83 owner complaints
  • Electrical 17
  • Acceleration and cruise control 8
  • Body and structure 7

Worth adding to your 2025 checks

  • Set cruise control on a highway test drive and confirm the set speed matches your speed, not 110 mph.
  • Drive at least 30 minutes and watch the instrument cluster for blackouts, reboots, or system-check screens.
  • Ask for service records showing cluster replacements, software updates, or SC322 and SC338 campaign work.

  • Electrical 56
  • Transmission 28
  • Brakes 26

Worth adding to your 2025 checks

  • Check the VIN in federal recall records and confirm the brake booster recall 23V410000 was completed.
  • Inspect the panoramic sunroof and windshield for cracks, straight fracture lines, or signs of replacement glass.
  • On the highway, set cruise control and raise it one step; walk away if the set speed jumps to 110 mph.

Which Sportage is it?

EPA figures for each version of the 2025 Kia Sportage. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.

VersionDriveEPA rating

1.6L 4-cylHybridAWD, FWD38–43 mpg

  • The 2025 Kia Sportage was sold in three versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
  • On the hybrid, watch for the car moving off on electric power at low speed and for any hybrid system warning on the dash.
  • Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Sportage that averages well under the EPA 26 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Check the odometer against these mileages

Owners report these failures starting around the mileages below. A car inside one of these ranges deserves a closer look at that part, or records showing it was already fixed.

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2025 Kia Sportage, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Electrical9No crashes

The instrument cluster goes blank while driving, runs a startup-style system check, and returns after 5 to 10 seconds, sometimes with inaccurate readings. Cruise control drops out during the reset, so the car slows in traffic. Other reports describe the engine shutting off at speed, with heavy steering and braking until auto start-stop restarts it. Infotainment screens freeze or go black, and one is tied to open recall SC359B with no remedy available. Some hybrids hesitate pulling away from a stop and then lurch forward. Problems can start under 300 miles, and dealers often cannot replicate them.

  • Steering73 crashes

Complete loss of steering is the most serious pattern here. In two reports the wheel separates from the column, and another driver says steering quit without warning at 119 miles. Lane assist can also jerk the wheel hard enough to cause a crash. Several filings are really power failures, such as a hybrid system shutdown or a car that stops moving and shows multiple fault codes, which also cuts power steering and power brakes. Three complaints involve crashes, and two report injuries.

  • Transmission5No crashes

The transmission fails to shift or drops into neutral, sometimes stalling the engine in traffic. Drivers describe the engine revving while the car does not speed up, refusing to climb a hill, an amber auto start-stop light, and stalls at 45 to 50 mph that need a restart. One hybrid needed a replacement transmission at 250 miles and sat at the dealer for weeks. A surge after a dash reset with cruise control set is also reported. Dealers often cannot reproduce the fault.

  • Acceleration and cruise control42 crashes

The car revs loudly and lunges forward without warning while pulling into a parking spot. Both crashes in this category happened that way, one into a tree and one into a brick pillar, and an airbag deployed in one. Other reports describe cruise control stuck at a 110 mph set speed and violent bucking under acceleration on busy roads, with no warning lights. A dealer could not replicate the cruise control fault.

  • Automatic emergency braking3No crashes

Automatic emergency braking slams on hard in slowing highway traffic, leaving following drivers little time to react. It also fires while reversing for cars that are not actually behind the vehicle. Highway driving assist can switch off with no warning while it is steering. Lane keeping assist turns itself back on when adaptive cruise is re-engaged on the freeway, even after the driver disables it, and the sudden wheel movement can startle drivers into jerking the wheel.

  • Wipers and visibility2No crashes

Panoramic sunroof glass explodes at highway speed with a bang like a gunshot, and glass rains into the cabin. Both reports describe shards landing on occupants, including a child, and tiny cuts. The glass broke outward with no sign of impact. Similar sunroof failures appear in other complaint categories for this model year, so this is a recurring problem rather than a one-off.

  • Lane keeping2No crashes

Blind spot detection and lane assist fail to warn about a car in the next lane, and one report describes a collision during a lane change. That driver says the warning failed again afterward. The other complaint describes an unexplained alarm while driving that appeared to involve a door. Neither report mentions a confirmed diagnosis or repair, and one says Kia refused to repair the damaged areas so they could be inspected.

  • Body and structure2No crashes

Roof moldings blow off both sides of the car. The owner links it to a recall on 2023 and 2024 models, and the repair involved gluing the molding back on. In the other report, a rodent reached the cabin air filter through a hole between the engine compartment and passenger compartment at about 17,000 miles, and the dealer did not repair it. These are isolated reports, not a broad pattern.

In owners' own words

Excerpts from complaints Sportage owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.

Electrical
Dash resets and you loose instruments for a few seconds. When they come back they are inaccurate. This has happened many times and have had the car to the dealer twice who cannot replicate the issue. Warning lamps did illuminate for a second then goes away. vehicle has had less than 300 miles on it when this first started

Filed with NHTSA, July 2025

Electrical
was driving at 40mph and vehicle turned off engine. Auto start stop was beeping and flashing. steering and braking was hindered (was manual) for a few seconds until the auto start stop turned the engine on again. Had car to dealer with other issues (dash resets) and they couldn't duplicate the issue and stated there was nothing they could do

Filed with NHTSA, July 2025

SteeringCrash reported
After a hard crash from behind and then being pushed into another car, causing severe damage to the front and rear of the car (total loss), the airbags only deployed on the right (passenger) side. In addition, after the crash, the steering wheel was lying at the driver's feet, completely detached from its original position.

Filed with NHTSA, November 2025

Steering
The steering shaft de-coupled from the steering wheel, leading to a complete loss of steering. After stop, engine was turned off and steering wheel lowered. At that point the steering wheel fell in my lap, completely decoupling from the steering collum.

Filed with NHTSA, July 2025

Transmission
Started vehicle and was driving, ISG (auto start stop) light went amber and transmission refused to shift to allow uphill travel. Had to pull over and turn engine off and on again for the transmission to start working. Have had to dealer, however yet again they cannot replicate in their test drive so they can't do anything about it.

Filed with NHTSA, July 2025

Transmission
vehicle dash reset and cruise control was set. when dash came back up car surged nearly causing a wreck Reported to dealership and they could not replicate so not sure what to do as they can never replicate the issues and won't do anything to help

Filed with NHTSA, July 2025

Acceleration and cruise control
While driving, my cruise control got stuck at 110 miles per hour. Three times I turned it off and on and each time the 'cruise' speed was set at 110mph. I took it to the local dealer and they were unable to replicate the issue.

Recalls to confirm (1)

Recall repairs are free at any Kia dealer, but the seller may never have had them done. Check each campaign number against the VIN.

  1. 25V874000Trailer HitchesDec 2025

Kia America, Inc. (Kia) is recalling certain 2023-2025 Sportage Plug-In Hybrid Electric (PHEV) and 2024-2025 Sportage vehicles equipped with a 4.2" screen and a Genuine Kia tow hitch harness accessory. Due to a software error, the instrument panel screen may fail. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 101, "Controls and Displays.".

Risk: An instrument panel screen that fails to display critical safety information, such as the speedometer or warning lights, can increase the risk of a crash.

Fix: Dealers will replace the tow hitch harness control module, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed February 13, 2026. Owners may contact Kia Customer Service at 1-800-333-4542. Kia's number for this recall is SC359. Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs) involved in this recall will be searchable on NHTSA.gov beginning December 31, 2025.
