Which RAV4 is it?
EPA figures for each version of the 2018 Toyota RAV4. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.
| Version | Drive | EPA rating |
|---|---|---|
| 2.5L 4-cylGas | AWD, FWD | 25–26 mpg |
| 2.5L 4-cylHybrid | AWD | 32 mpg |
- The 2018 Toyota RAV4 was sold in two versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
- On the hybrid, watch for the car moving off on electric power at low speed and for any hybrid system warning on the dash.
- Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A RAV4 that averages well under the EPA 25 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Why these checks: what owners reported
NHTSA complaints for the 2018 Toyota RAV4, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.
Electrical1113 crashes
Fires are the dominant pattern, and many start near the battery. The car often shuts off while moving, the screen and gauges go dark, and steering locks before smoke appears from under the hood. Several reports blame a battery that shifts under hard braking. Other fires begin while parked, including in garages. Many owners cite recall 23V734 and say the fix or its parts were not available for months. Smaller complaints describe headlight bulbs burning out over and over and melting their sockets.
Transmission263 crashes
Transmission trouble shows up as loud bangs and jerks when shifting out of park, delayed takeoff, hunting for gears, and torque converter shudder under light throttle. Some cars lose drive completely on the highway and need a new transmission. Hybrids buck and jerk at highway speed as EV mode tries to engage, and dealers usually cannot reproduce it. Stalling with a charging system warning is also reported. Crash reports involve sudden surges while parking and a car rolling away after being switched off in Drive.
Brakes194 crashes
The pedal goes soft, sinks toward the floor, or needs heavy force, and several cars fail to stop and hit something. Owners describe mushy brakes and loud scraping or screeching as early as 18,000 miles, and dealers often say they cannot find a fault. Pads and rotors wear out early, sometimes unevenly on one wheel, and front rotors overheat and warp repeatedly. Some reports pair an ABS failure message with shaking, lost power, or smoke. One dealer found a vacuum leak under the pedal.
Exterior lights191 crash
Night visibility is the main complaint. The projector low beams cut off sharply, leaving the road ahead, hill crests, and roadside signs dark, and dealers say the lights work as designed. Automatic high beams switch themselves off or refuse to engage, and in some cars the high beams do not work at all. Auto headlights can shut off for seconds while driving. Other reports cite bulbs that keep failing, condensation inside new headlights, and brake lights that stay off while radar cruise slows the car.
Wipers and visibility151 crash
Sunroof glass shatters at highway speed with a loud bang and no sign of impact, sometimes showering occupants. Windshields crack with no impact point, often while parked, and one crack starts at the camera mount. Replacement windshields are back-ordered for weeks. Owners also describe dashboard glare reflecting into the windshield in bright sun, a large blind spot at the right front pillar and mirror, and wiper blades that ice over in freezing weather.
Acceleration and cruise control142 crashes
The car accelerates on its own, at times with the driver's foot on the brake, and some of these events end in crashes. Adaptive cruise control misbehaves in both directions: it brakes hard or stops for nothing ahead, or speeds up when another car cuts in or it loses track of the car ahead. Other reports describe hesitation pulling away from a stop and hybrids losing power with overheating or malfunction warnings. Dealers frequently find no fault.
Airbags1311 crashes
Nondeployment in serious collisions is the main pattern, including head-on impacts, a highway deer strike, and a hit from a semi truck. Most complaints here involve a crash, and several report injuries. Some drivers see an SRS or safety system malfunction message after the impact. Less often, side or curtain bags deploy when they should not, including once at under 5 mph with no collision. Several of these crashes also involve reported braking or acceleration failures.
Engine101 crash
Sudden shutdown while driving, followed by fire, is the most serious pattern, sometimes after flickering gauges or lost power steering. One fire starts in a parked car in a garage. Other cars lose power on the freeway and stall, sometimes showing an AWD malfunction message and dropping into 2WD mode. One car speeds up at a stop with the brake pressed and hits another car. Smaller reports describe engine heat and a foul odor entering the cabin, and a crankshaft sprocket problem causing harsh starts around 60k miles.
In owners' own words
Excerpts from complaints RAV4 owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.
Vehicle check engine light comes on, followed within 20 minutes by emergency alerts stating that multiple systems are failing or unavailable. It then says to get to a safe place within .3 miles. The car shuts itself down after .3 and is bricked until it is towed to a mechanic.this has happened 6 times this year.

2018 hybrid battery does not hold charge. Sometimes the battery dies even where it should be fully charged and driving. Drove 5 hours straight on 7/10. Does on the highway. The car battery has been dying almost from day 1 . This car is only 2 1/2 and only 20, 000 miles .

Transmission failure at high speed on the freeway during a non shifting period. Transmission automatically downshifted to 3rd gear at speed on freeway and would not reengage properly to higher gears resulting in immediate red line and sudden slow down in free flowing freeway traffic

The front rotors 4 times and been placed due to overheating. I only have 49,540 miles when the fourth set was put on May 10, 2023. The problem is the rotors keep getting overheated and then they warp. I have replaced them 4 times in less than owning the car for 5 years. It appears to happen more frequently now about every 6 months. The problem is confirmed both at 2 different locations in Lees Summit, MO. See receipts below for repair shops.

The headlights on my Rav4 are dangerous. When driving at night there is a dark line with no visibility. There is no reaction time if objects are in the roadway. I live in a rural area, on my way to work there was a pine tree that fell across the road way,I crashed straight into it. I did not even see it until I hit it.

Wiring harness in many vehicles defective. Letter sent, but not a recall. I drove from NY to VA unaware that a headlight was out- I had to change bulbs several times, and ended up having to pay $500 for a new lighting system because I put the bulb in (apparently) wrong the 5th time. Accident could have happened due to bad lighting, but fortunately did not. Toyota did not make this issue easily known, or easily fixed.
