Which Escape is it?

EPA figures for each version of the 2025 Ford Escape. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.

VersionDriveEPA rating
1.5L 3-cylGasAWD, FWD28–30 mpg
2.0L 4-cylGasAWD26 mpg
2.5L 4-cylHybridFWD, 4WD39 mpg
2.5L 4-cylPlug-in hybridFWD560 mi range
  • The 2025 Ford Escape was sold in four versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
  • On the hybrid, watch for the car moving off on electric power at low speed and for any hybrid system warning on the dash.
  • Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Escape that averages well under the EPA 26 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2025 Ford Escape, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Electrical5No crashes

Stalling in traffic leads these reports, with engine RPM rising and falling and no dashboard warnings. Driver-assist faults follow. Forward collision avoidance triggers without cause, the brakes apply on their own with cruise control set at 55 mph, and lane departure assist steers the car back during intended lane changes. Dealers often find no fault code, and reprogramming does not hold. On the plug-in hybrid, high-voltage battery and powertrain warnings appear during Level 2 charging, with long shop stays. Some owners are still waiting on recall repairs because parts are unavailable.

  • Transmission3No crashes

The transmission shifts by itself, dropping from Drive to Neutral or Park and from Reverse to Park. In one case the engine shut off after an unwanted shift into Park. A software update changed the behavior without fixing it. Other reports describe hesitation when pulling away from a light, as if the engine will stall, then a sudden lurch forward, plus a burning or rotten-egg smell at high speed. Dealers see no codes, so repeat visits end without a repair. Owners also list several open recalls on their cars.

  • Engine2No crashes

Stalling while turning the steering wheel is the failure owners describe, both at speed and when turning from a full stop. The car restarts, and no warning light comes on. Dealers report finding no problem after several visits, so the car goes unrepaired. A stall in the middle of a turn raises the risk of a crash. Most reports in this category also describe waiting on a recall repair that dealers cannot complete because parts are not yet available.
