Which CX-50 is it?

EPA figures for each version of the 2025 Mazda CX-50. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.

VersionDriveEPA rating
2.5L 4-cylGas4WD28 mpg
2.5L 4-cylHybrid4WD38 mpg
  • The 2025 Mazda CX-50 was sold in two versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
  • On the hybrid, watch for the car moving off on electric power at low speed and for any hybrid system warning on the dash.
  • Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A CX-50 that averages well under the EPA 28 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Check the odometer against these mileages

Owners report these failures starting around the mileages below. A car inside one of these ranges deserves a closer look at that part, or records showing it was already fixed.

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2025 Mazda CX-50, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Transmission6No crashes

Front CV boots leak grease and front axles develop internal damage, often around 6,000 miles. The usual symptom is a clunk from the front end during left or right turns. Some dealers blame boot leaks on outside impact without clear proof. Others replace the axle, but replacement parts have been back-ordered for weeks. In a second pattern, the transmission fails to engage Drive after reversing. The car acts like it is in neutral or rolls backward, with no warning lights. Restarting the engine, sometimes more than once, restores Drive. This can leave the car stuck in traffic.

  • Seats2No crashes

Front seats get dangerously hot or catch fire. One complaint describes thigh burns and blisters after using the heated seat on and off during a long drive. That is the 1 injury on file. Another describes a fire that started inside a front seat of a nearly new Hybrid under normal use and charred the seat material. Neither report names a cause or a fix. There are only 2 complaints, but both involve a direct burn or fire risk to the people in the car.

  • Suspension2No crashes

CV joints and front axles fail early, with one failure reported at 6000 miles. Reported symptoms include clicking, vibration, loss of power to the wheels, and complete axle failure. Dealers say multiple Hybrid vehicles are coming back with the same problem, and one repair took over 3 weeks. A failed axle can cause a sudden loss of propulsion, which raises crash risk at highway speeds or in turns. These reports describe the same axle problem filed under the power train heading.

  • Body and structure2No crashes

Body fit problems show up in two forms. One is a dent in the rear bumper. A dealer ruled the existing bulletin for that defect did not apply to the car. The other is a front passenger door that scrapes against the fender. The same filing also describes a rough idle at startup that shakes the cabin for about 40 seconds before it smooths out. With only 2 complaints, these look like fit and finish annoyances, not a demonstrated safety problem.

In owners' own words

Excerpts from complaints CX-50 owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.

Transmission
I bought the car new from Mazda in December, 2024, and I am the original owner of the car. I backed out of a parking space. I shifted my gear to D, but the car kept sliding backward. I quickly shifted the gear back to P, pressed the parking brake, and turned off my engine. I had to restart my engine several times before the car will drive forward in D. This incident happened twice already.

Filed with NHTSA, June 2025

Suspension
Vehicle CV joints failed at 6000 miles, dealership took over 3 weeks to replace them. They claimed multiple CX50 hybrid vehicles are impacted and lots of them already returning under the same problem

Filed with NHTSA, February 2026

Body and structure
An indentation in the rear bumper may be noticed SAME AS sa035/22 BUT DEALER said is not applicable to my vehicle even when is the same deffect.
