Which Escape is it?
EPA figures for each version of the 2018 Ford Escape. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.
| Version | Drive | EPA rating |
|---|---|---|
| 1.5L 4-cylGas | AWD, FWD | 24–26 mpg |
| 2.0L 4-cylGas | AWD, FWD | 23–24 mpg |
| 2.5L 4-cylGas | FWD | 24 mpg |
| 2.5L 4-cylFlex fuel | FWD | 24 mpg |
- The 2018 Ford Escape was sold in four versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
- Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Escape that averages well under the EPA 23 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Why these checks: what owners reported
NHTSA complaints for the 2018 Ford Escape, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.
Engine1,0962 crashes
Coolant leaks into the cylinders, causing misfires, rough running, white exhaust smoke, overheating, and finally an engine that needs a replacement long block. A check engine light and misfire codes for cylinder 2 or 3 often come first, and shops sometimes replace spark plugs before they find the leak. Reported failures range from 22,000 to 121,000 miles. Some engines lose power or die at highway speed, and three reports involve fire, including flames under the hood. Owners past Ford's extended coverage report paying $7300 to $9100 for a new engine.
Coolant getting into the cylinders makes up most of these reports, often diagnosed as a blown head gasket. Symptoms include a check engine light, cylinder misfires, shaking at startup, a temperature gauge climbing to hot, limp mode, and stalling. Dealers usually call for a new short block or long block. Failures show up from about 24,500 to 150,000 miles, with many near 100,000. Several owners say they were just past Ford's mileage limit for coverage and got no help.
Transmission2334 crashes
The car moves on its own after being shifted into park. It rolls away or backs into homes and garages, and in some cases runs over the driver. Other reports describe sudden acceleration while pulling into a parking space with the brake pressed. The category has 4 crash-related reports and 6 injuries. Several owners with a recall notice say the repair was held up because parts were unavailable. Transmission failures also appear, with lagging, slipping, or loss of drive between about 58,847 and 145,000 miles.
Electrical401 crash
The SYNC module (APIM) fails and takes out the touch screen, radio, navigation, Bluetooth, USB charging, and rear camera. Reports put this at around 55,000 to 65,000 miles. Other complaints describe the engine shutting off in traffic, dash lights and gauges going dark, a string of warning messages at once, and repeated battery replacements. Stalling after refueling is also reported, in one case fixed by replacing the purge valve. A low-beam headlight connector that melts and burns out the bulb also comes up.
Steering283 crashes
Power steering assist cuts out without warning, often with a "Steering Assist Fault" or "Power Steering Loss" message, and the wheel becomes very heavy. It can happen at startup or while driving. Shops usually find a failed electric steering rack. One dealer repair cost $3,171.45, and some owners waited on back-ordered parts. Failures mostly fall between about 15,108 and 69,470 miles. Other reports describe the wheel pulling right on its own. The category has 3 crash-related reports, including a rollover after the steering went stiff.
Wheels and tires18No crashes
Lug nuts swell and deform, so the factory lug wrench no longer fits and shops will not rotate the tires until the nuts are replaced. Most owners find out during a routine oil change or tire rotation, at about 34,250 to 95,000 miles. A flat tire can turn into a tow because the nuts will not come off. Replacing a set of 17 can cost several hundred dollars. One report describes a rear rim failing at highway speed.
Brakes162 crashes
The brake pedal sinks to the floor and the car does not stop. This happens at low speed right after startup and also in traffic. In one case it was traced to a faulty master cylinder at about 23,000 miles. Two reports involve crashes. Rear pads and rotors also wear out early, with uneven wear and deep scoring reported at 13,967 and 32,000 miles. Higher-mileage cars show parking brake faults, including one that engaged by itself at 20 mph.
Body and structure15No crashes
Water leaks into the cabin and spare tire well through failed roof seam sealer, a rear quarter panel, or the area near the rearview mirror. White paint around the windshield and pillars bubbles, cracks, and peels. Other complaints cover doors that will not latch, a driver's door hinge that pops loudly, a dashboard lifting near the glove box, a belly shield that falls off, and a liftgate that opened while driving and then closed on a person's head. Two reports involve injuries.
Airbags87 crashes
In serious crashes, the bags fail to deploy. Reports include head-on collisions, a guardrail impact, and rear-end crashes at highway speed that left cars totaled. Seven of the 8 complaints are crash-related, and together they report 7 injuries. Some drivers say they hit the steering wheel or dashboard. The one remaining complaint concerns a recall notice where the dealer did not have the parts to do the repair.
In owners' own words
Excerpts from complaints Escape owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.
My vehicle is under 80,000 miles. The check engine light came on and the car was not drivable. Fortunetely, I was in my driveway when the check engine light blinked and car did not run. If it was on the road, I would have been in danger. I immediately towed it to the business I have a warranty with. Bill Collins Ford has determined the engine has a cracked cylinder and coolant was leaking in. I now have to have the short block replaced costing near $7,000.
Filed with NHTSA, October 2022
I bought the car in June of 2023 and 2 months later started having issues. Replaced the fuel pump, replaced the PTU, camshaft and now the engine needs replaced. Ford is aware of the engine issue but didn’t issue a recall only an extended warranty for 7 years/84,000 miles. I was not made aware of this problem at the time of purchase or receive any letter stating that. Had I known about the problem with those engines I never would have purchased the car.

I am at 123,000 miles, older driver that primarily drives around town. I have been having issues with the transmission lagging, I had the transmission serviced but the problem persists. The transmission shop tried to reset the transmission, however it will not reset. It was diagnosed with an issue with the 3rd/5th gears (related), and suspected to have an issue with the gears plate. Far too few miles to have this happening.
Filed with NHTSA, September 2025
On 10/17/2025, my transmission stop working properly after driving fine for 145,000 miles. This seems to be a common occurrence with this year and model for the Escape. The transmission is an automatic and stopped going in the drive gear on the highway. I was able to get the car off the road and have it towed to a mechanic where they verified that that I would need a new transmission.

The APIM failed in both my ESCAPE and F150. These vehicles are under 65,000 miles and are 2018. This is a known issue, and is all over Internet forums. The APIM failure has resulted in no rear camera, screen, radio, or USB ports.

No dummy lights show. Drivers low beam wiring connector melts and burns out headlight bulb. I have had it replaced by Ford dealer RT 2, Dixon Il on 12/20/24 but again the same thing occurred again 01/03/26. I believe bad wiring or module. When asked dealer what caused the melting was told "We fixed it, it's good now". The bulb burnt out while driving on a rain dark night. My visibility was extremely low.

The steering of the vehicle completely went out with NO warning lights/no warning whatsoever. If this had happened at speed or a sharp turn, this would have likely resulted in a collision. There are only 50,000 miles on the vehicle, so there is no way that the steering should completely go out. I see there are other vehicles that this has occurred with as well in this model/year; I feel that this should be a safety recall.
Filed with NHTSA, January 2025
There have been several instances of the vehicle completely shutting off while sitting idle and at red lights. I took it to the dealership and there is coolant leaking into the cylinders causing it to misfire. This is very dangerous and could cause the car to run hot or burn up! The said I should replace the engine but FORD should be responsible as this seems to be a problem in many of their escapes!

Recalls to confirm (4)
Recall repairs are free at any Ford dealer, but the seller may never have had them done. Check each campaign number against the VIN.
26V011000EquipmentJan 2026
Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2013-2018 Focus, 2013-2019 Escape, and 2015-2016 MKC vehicles equipped with a 2.0L engine. The engine block heater may crack and develop a coolant leak, causing it to short circuit when the block heater is plugged in.
Risk: An electrical short circuit can increase the risk of a fire.
Fix: Owners are advised not to plug in their block heater until the vehicle is remedied. Dealers will replace the block heater, free of charge. Owners will also have a alternative option to replace engine block heater element with a threaded plug, and remove the block heater electrical cord. Interim letters, notifying owners of the safety risk, were mailed March 6, 2026. Additional letters will be sent once the final remedy is available. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 26S01. Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs) involved in this recall became searchable on NHTSA.gov on January 16, 2026.
22V413000TransmissionJun 2022
Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2013-2019 Escape, 2013-2018 C-Max, 2013-2016 Fusion, 2013-2021 Transit Connect, and 2015-2018 Edge vehicles. The bushing that attaches the shifter cable to the transmission may degrade or detach.
Risk: A damaged or missing bushing may prevent the vehicle from shifting into the intended gear, and cause the vehicle to move in an unexpected direction. Additionally, the vehicle may roll after the driver selects the 'Park' position. Either scenario increases the risk of a crash or injury.
Fix: Dealers will replace the under hood shift bushing and add a protective cap over the shift cable bushing, free of charge. Interim owner notification letters, informing owners of the safety risk, were mailed July 1, 2022. Remedy parts are expected to be available in 4th Quarter 2022. Owner notification letters were mailed October 27, 2022. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 22S43.
18V104000BrakesFeb 2018
Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2018 Ford Escape and Lincoln MKC vehicles. These vehicles may be equipped with incorrect front brake hoses that may chafe against other components, possibly resulting in a brake fluid leak.
Risk: A brake fluid leak may lengthen the distance needed to stop the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.
Fix: Ford will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the brake hoses, replacing any that are incorrect, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin March 2018. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 18S04.
17V803000AirbagsDec 2017
Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2018 Ford Escape vehicles. The side curtain air bags on these vehicles have a component that may detach during deployment of the inflatable curtain air bag.
Risk: If the component detaches during deployment, it may enter the passenger compartment and be a projectile within the vehicle cabin, increasing the risk of injury.
Fix: Ford will notify owners, and dealers will replace the driver and passenger side curtain air bags, as necessary, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin January 2018. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 17S44.
