Which Sportage is it?
EPA figures for each version of the 2018 Kia Sportage. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.
| Version | Drive | EPA rating |
|---|---|---|
| 2.0L 4-cyl | AWD, FWD | 21–23 mpg |
| 2.4L 4-cyl | AWD, FWD | 23–26 mpg |
- The 2018 Kia Sportage was sold in two versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
- Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Sportage that averages well under the EPA 21 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.
Check the odometer against these mileages
Owners report these failures starting around the mileages below. A car inside one of these ranges deserves a closer look at that part, or records showing it was already fixed.
Excessive engine oil consumption
40,000–100,000 miles
Rod bearing wear, limp mode
111,595–120,000 miles
Why these checks: what owners reported
NHTSA complaints for the 2018 Kia Sportage, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.
Engine53No crashes
Heavy oil consumption is the most common report, often a quart or more every 1,000 miles with no visible leak. Many cases move on to knocking, misfires, lost compression, or limp mode with code P1326, which points to connecting rod bearing wear. Those failures cluster past 100,000 miles, though some engines failed near 18,000. Several reports describe smoke from under the hood, a stall, and then flames. Five complaints involve fire and one an injury. Some owners say warranty claims were denied for missing oil change records.
Electrical201 crash
Wiring harness overheating is the most serious pattern. Owners describe melted plugs at the battery, alternator, and cooling fan, a smell of smoke, and in one case sudden loss of speed on a highway. No-start problems also come up, where the car needs repeated jump starts even though the battery tests fine. Several owners report thefts after the anti-theft software upgrade was done. Other complaints cover dead low beams, brake lights shorting out, and a failed power window regulator. One report describes the whole car burning while parked.
Transmission14No crashes
The transmission slips out of gear without warning. The engine revs and the tachometer climbs, but the car coasts for a few seconds before it catches again. This happens at highway speeds, in turns, and when pulling away from a stop, which makes merging risky. Some drivers report hard downshifts into first followed by a jolt as the gear engages. Others report a sudden loss of power with the check engine light on. Dealers often cannot reproduce the problem and leave it unrepaired.
Steering93 crashes
Power steering can drop out along with the headlights, radio, and dashboard when the electrical system fails while driving. One report links a crash and an injury to a combined loss of steering and brakes. Some owners say the wheel locks up during turns, and one reports the car pulling left after a steering column replacement. Flickering displays with an AFLS warning are also mentioned. Two of the three crash reports involve theft, including thieves stripping the steering column and starting the car without a key.
Brakes82 crashes
Most of these complaints are about recall 21V137000, not brake failures. Owners report the repair part was unavailable, with dealers quoting waits of 1 to 2 months, and one car went back to its owner unrepaired. Actual failures are rare but serious. One report describes brakes that did not engage and caused a rear-end crash, and another describes the car rolling down a driveway while in Park. A grinding noise with an ABS warning light was traced to the ABS module.
Exterior lights4No crashes
Headlights and the navigation screen flicker or shut off while driving at night, sometimes with an AFLS warning on the display. Restarting clears the warning, but the flicker comes back. One new car lost its instrument lights on a dark highway with under 100 miles on it. Another owner had lights fail from a bad connection. One complaint is about design: the rear turn signals and reverse lights sit low on the bumper, and following drivers struggle to see them.
Body and structure4No crashes
Paint and clear coat peel off the hood, front bumper, roof, and side mirrors, leaving white patches. Owners of white pearl cars mention chipping in particular. The problem gets worse over time, even on cars washed only by hand. One report describes the front sunroof glass exploding at interstate speed with a loud bang. Glass covered the driver, and the scare nearly caused a collision with nearby traffic.
Seats4No crashes
The passenger seat heater can scorch the seat and leave an L-shaped burn mark, even on its normal settings. Driver seat problems are the other theme. The recline gets stuck and is hard to bring back upright, and one seat latch failed, so the seat would not move forward. That failure came at about 61,000 miles, and the dealer did not diagnose or repair it.
In owners' own words
Excerpts from complaints Sportage owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.
Code P0303. Took car to dealer for diagnosis, dealer recommended long engine block replacement due to bad pistons. Kia will not replace. Car has 68K miles on it. Called Kia and they will not even do a goodwill replacement. There is a history of engine failures on my same year and model car but not for this exact reason.
Filed with NHTSA, August 2024
My car engine failed due to extreme oil consumption. It ran out of oil completely after 2K miles from my last synthetic oil change and damaged my 3rd cylinder. I have maintained the car perfectly and done all recommended repairs. My car only has 66K miles and already needs a new engine.

The tow hitch can apparently start a fire. I can not afford to rent a car & must use mine as I am disabled & have a mother with dementia, so I need my vehicle. Kia still has not resolved this issue. This recall has been open since September, 10 MONTHS! This is the THIRD recall for this vehicle, one has a current lawsuit.

Took my car for the theft recall and had it performed, my vehicle was stolen last night and the theft used a USB charging cable to steal it, the recall did not fix this
Filed with NHTSA, January 2026
I was riding on the highway at about 65 mph and then the check engine light came on, the car slowed down and lost power. Now when I take off I have to barely mash the gas to pick up speed, if I mash the gas pedal hard it barely moves and it loses speed and power going up a hill. I took the car to two different part store and had a reader hooked up and it said the power powertrain control module needs a reprogramming.

Where the 2018 fits in the Sportage's history
Redesigns and mid-cycle updates change what can go wrong.
The 2018 is the second model year of the Sportage's fourth generation (2017–2022).
Kia updated the Sportage for 2020, so a 2018 does not have those changes.
What changed for 2020 (not on a 2018)
- Redesigned headlights and bumpers
- New sporty model 'S' introduced
Recalls to confirm (3)
Recall repairs are free at any Kia dealer, but the seller may never have had them done. Check each campaign number against the VIN.
22V703000Trailer HitchesPark outsideSep 2022
Kia America, Inc. (Kia) is recalling certain 2016-2022 Sorento, 2021-2022 Sorento Hybrid (HEV), 2022-2023 Sorento Plug-In Hybrid (PHEV), and 2017-2022 Sportage vehicles equipped with a tow hitch harness installed as original equipment, or purchased as an accessory through a Kia dealership. Debris and moisture accumulation on the tow hitch harness module printed circuit board (PCB) may cause an electrical short, which can result in a fire.
Risk: A fire while parked or driving can increase the risk of injury.
Fix: Owners are advised to park outside and away from structures until the recall repair is complete. Dealers will inspect the vehicle, and, as necessary, replace the fuse and/or tow hitch harness module, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed August 11, 2023. Owners may contact Kia customer service at 1-800-333-4542. Kia's number for this recall is SC249.
21V137000BrakesPark outsideMar 2021
Kia Motors America (Kia) is recalling certain 2017-2021 Sportage and Cadenza vehicles. The electrical circuit in the Hydraulic Electronic Control Unit (HECU) may short-circuit, which can cause a fire in the engine compartment.
Risk: An engine compartment fire can increase the risk of injury.
Fix: Owners are advised to park outside and away from structures as a precaution until the recall repair is complete. Kia will notify owners, and dealers will replace certain fuses in the electrical junction box. Vehicles equipped with an electronic parking brake (EPB) will also receive a HECU software update. Repairs will be performed free of charge. The recall began on April 30, 2021. Owners may contact Kia customer service at 1-800-333-4542. Kia's number for this recall is SC206.
18V907000Fuel systemDec 2018
Kia Motors America (Kia) is recalling certain 2011-2017 Optima, 2012-2017 Sorento and 2011-2018 Sportage vehicles that previously received an engine replacement under recall number 17V-224, warranty, or the Knock Sensor Detection System (KSDS) Product Improvement Campaign. The high pressure fuel pipe that connects to the fuel pump outlet may have been damaged, misaligned or improperly torqued during the engine replacement procedure, possibly causing a fuel leak.
Risk: A fuel leak in the presence of an ignition source can increase the risk of a fire.
Fix: Kia has notified owners, and dealers will inspect and replace the fuel pipe, as necessary, free of charge. The recall began January 17, 2019. Owners may contact Kia customer service at 1-800-333-4542. Kia's number for this recall is SC172.
