Which Model 3 is it?
EPA figures for each version of the 2024 Tesla Model 3. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.
| Version | Drive | EPA rating |
|---|---|---|
| Electric | AWD, RWD | 342–363 mi range |
- With a full charge, the range estimate on the dash should land near the EPA figure of 342–363 miles. A much lower number on a mild day can mean a worn battery; ask for a battery health report.
Why these checks: what owners reported
NHTSA complaints for the 2024 Tesla Model 3, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.
Steering343 crashes
Power steering assist cuts out, showing "steering assist reduced" warnings and leaving a wheel that takes heavy force to turn. Other reports describe sudden steering inputs nobody asked for while driver-assistance features are on, including crashes into a tunnel wall and off the road. A new car pulling hard to one side despite repeated alignments also appears. Most complaints in this category, though, are about turn signal buttons that stick or ignore presses. Several say a new steering wheel did not help and service called it normal. Of 34 complaints, 3 involve crashes, with 4 people injured.
Electrical272 crashes
Sudden loss of drive power is the most serious pattern. The rear motor fails with only seconds of warning, in one case under 4,000 miles, and other cars lose power repeatedly on freeways, taking power steering with it. Blank touchscreens also appear, including in one crash. Turn signal button failures come up again, and Tesla confirmed a known software issue in at least one case. Smaller patterns include a horn that quits in rain or freezing weather, a high-pitched front drive unit whine in the cold, and rear display glass that cracks with no impact.
Automatic emergency braking191 crash
Phantom braking leads this category. The car brakes hard at highway speed or in the middle of a turn with nothing in its path, and some drivers report neck pain afterward. The front camera fogs inside its sealed housing, which shuts down or weakens automatic emergency braking, lane keeping, and adaptive cruise. Other reports describe no reaction to near head-on collisions at night, and Full Self-Driving lurching forward at red lights or speeding after software updates. One crash with 2 injuries involved an unexpected turn on Autopilot.
Exterior lights181 crash
Turn signal buttons stick, feel locked solid, or give no click, so the signal never comes on. In one case a signal stuck on and would not cancel at about 1,800 miles. Several reports say the problem came back after a steering wheel replacement and software update. Some drivers get the button working again by pressing the opposite signal or pushing straight down firmly. Separate reports describe a driver-side tail light filling with water and a brake light that sometimes fails, with weeks of waiting for parts. In one crash, all exterior lights shut off at night on an unlit freeway.
Acceleration and cruise control16No crashes
Cruise control slows the car hard on its own, with drops of 15 mph or more at highway speed and no message on the display explaining why. Following drivers get caught off guard. Slowdowns also happen on rolling hills, long curves, and when flashing lights appear far ahead. A second pattern follows Full Self-Driving version 14 software, which took away the driver's maximum speed setting. Drivers say the car now goes over posted limits. Other reports describe sudden acceleration from a stop at traffic lights with FSD on. None of the 16 complaints involves a crash.
Airbags51 crash
Airbags fail to deploy in crashes, and safety restraint warnings keep coming back. In one car, service found damaged wiring at the passenger occupant sensing module and replaced the steering column control module. The buyer blames crash damage that was not disclosed at sale. In another case, service called the restraint warning a known issue but could not say what the fix was or when it would come. With only 5 complaints, this is a small category, but it bears directly on crash protection.
Lane keeping41 crash
Parking proximity alerts stay silent while reversing even though the on-screen warning works, and one report describes backing into a pole as a result. Other complaints are unrelated: Full Self-Driving choosing the wrong lane at intersections, and an alarm that only stops when the driver swerves the car. One filing has no detail beyond an attachment. The 4 complaints here do not share a common fault.
Transmission32 crashes
Unintended acceleration at low speed appears in two crashes, one pulling into a driveway and one in a drive-thru. Together they injured 4 people. A third report describes the rear motor making a noise and locking up at about 10 mph, followed by a pull-over-now alert and the car stopping on its own. There are only 3 complaints here, but each involves a sudden loss of control over the drivetrain.
In owners' own words
Excerpts from complaints Model 3 owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.
Steering wheel has buttons for turn signals (they removed stalks in 2024 model 3). I’ve had several dangerous incidents where the turn signal buttons have failed to activate. This caused me to panic and nearly get into an accident on several occasions. I brought in for service and they said this is a KNOWN problem with 2024 model 3. What a joke! They told me to bring it back in once I can replicate it 3 times again. Apparently we are lab rats.

Occasionally the turn signal button cannot be pressed down to make a turn signal. This event has happened quite a few times during some urgent moments when I need to exit the highway and gives us a big concern. I heard from many other owners that Tesla just replace your steering wheel, but it dose not fix the problem. It is not because of pressing on the wrong area of the button. This should be a systematic issue.

When vehicle is in rain or sub-freezing conditions, the horn completely stops functioning. Took vehicle to Tesla Service and was told, "Technician inspected and found the vehicles horn to be working as expected at this time. Technician noted that under heavy rain/snow the vehicles horn may not work as expected due to water accumulation in the cut out for the horn." The issue is reproducible every time the vehicle is exposed to rain or snow.

Turn signal capacitor buttons on the steering wheel on the 2024 Model 3 occasionally do not activate while driving causing an inability to signal a lane change. This is a major safety issue and is known by Tesla who has not provided an adequate fix to many 2024 Model 3 owners who are struggling with the issue. For a quality vehicle otherwise, this concern has placed me in a many unsafe situations.

Several times while using Traffic Aware Cruise Control, the system will suddenly brake severely for apparently reason. At these times, I was on a lightly traveled Interstate with no vehicles ahead of me. Each time, it was during daylight hours and it was sunny. This has also occurred while using Autopilot with Autosteer and with Full Self Driving. Once, there was a vehicle close behind me, so this sudden braking can be dangerous.

While driving with FSD engaged and set to standard profile, FSD accelerated to 76mph in a 55 zone. This is on software version 14.1.4. Unfortunately this new update no longer allows you to set your speed while using FSD, you can only select sloth, chill, standard, hurry, or mad max.
Filed with NHTSA, November 2025
Left and turn signal buttons randomly do not work especially after disengaging FSD. Sometimes I have to re-engage FSD for the buttons to work. This can be dangerous when I'm trying to make a turn and cars behind me could be going really fast or not pay attention. I believe this is a software or firmware issue and not the steering wheel itself. No warning messages. I did report to Tesla warranty.

Turn signal button frequently gets stuck and will not activate. This prevents driver from being able to properly signal when changing lanes and causes very dangerous situations, particularly when trying to exit the highway. My vehicle has not been inspected by the manufacturer, but this issue is very common across owners' forums. No warning signs or messages prior to failure.
