Which Camry is it?

EPA figures for each version of the 2024 Toyota Camry. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.

  • The 2024 Toyota Camry was sold in three versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
  • On the hybrid, watch for the car moving off on electric power at low speed and for any hybrid system warning on the dash.
  • Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Camry that averages well under the EPA 26 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2024 Toyota Camry, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Wheels and tires4No crashes

Factory tires fail early and sometimes violently. Reports describe sidewall bulges, a crease across one tire, a tire that explodes at normal speed, and a full tread separation on the interstate that upsets stability and control. Failures show up between about 200 and 14,893 miles on original Bridgestone and Firestone tires. Dealers blame road hazards, and the tire maker declines warranty help in one case. One dealer ties the bulges to an unspecified voluntary recall but does not replace the tires.

  • Airbags32 crashes

Front air bags fail to deploy in two crashes. One is a 6-vehicle pileup with repeated front and rear impacts. The other is a frontal hit severe enough to total the car. Both drivers report head, neck, or back injuries afterward, and one says no warning light appeared beforehand. The third filing is not an air bag problem. It alleges the dealer withheld the car's ownership paperwork.

  • Steering31 crash

With adaptive cruise control on, Lane Trace Assist yanks the wheel left or right out of the lane. Sometimes it pulls toward vehicles the blind spot monitor has already detected. A dealer alignment does not fix it. A separate crash report with an injury describes the car steering itself with no lane departure warning. Another owner reports a roaring noise and steering wheel vibration starting around 3k miles. It gets worse in left turns, and finding it takes three dealer visits.

  • Body and structure3No crashes

Rear passenger doors resist opening. Riders have to push the door outward while pulling the handle, and this has been the case since the car was new. A sunroof leaks in the rain within three months of purchase, and the dealer refuses to repair it. Another report traces a noise and vibration when pressing and releasing the brake to the driver's footwell. The dealer cannot find the cause. None of these reports involve a crash or injury.

  • Exterior lights2No crashes

The headlights aim low and do not reach far enough down the road, which makes night driving difficult. The dealer says the lights match every other 2024 Camry and that nothing can be done without a recall. A separate report describes melted plastic on the side mirrors, on the roof, and on the trim between the front and rear doors, with no cause given. No crashes are reported.

  • Seat belts2No crashes

The second-row right seat belt fails to lock under hard braking at about 5 mph. The passenger hits the front seatback, and afterward the belt does not retract, leaving several feet of slack. Separately, the seat belt reminder lights and chimes come on at random for passengers who are already buckled. The owner reporting the reminder fault also complains of hazy, glaring headlights from other cars at night.

  • Transmission2No crashes

The engine can be shut off and the key removed while the shifter is still in Drive. No warning light or chime appears, and the car can roll away. The dealer, after consulting Toyota, calls this normal and says no fix exists. Another report describes hesitation. The engine revs when the gas pedal is pressed, but the car does not pull, which makes highway merges and turns into traffic risky.

  • Electrical2No crashes

The instrument panel lights fail during daytime driving at about 300 miles, and the gauges become hard to read. The dealer sends the owner to the manufacturer instead of repairing it. Another owner reports an air bag warning light that flashes too briefly for the dealer to diagnose, leaving doubt about whether the air bags will work. Both complaints remain unresolved, and neither involves a crash.

Wheels and tires
215/55-17 Driving a brand new 2024 Toyota Camry with the OEM Bridgestone Tires on a smooth road at normal speed. Tire exploded and went flat. My safety and others were at risk but fortunately I was able to keep control of the car. Bridgestone is unwilling to honor the warranty

Airbags
The dealership and manufacturer will not provide mco on the vehicle they sold me as new. I think they’re title cloning or washing and committing odometer fraud. They don’t submit to the dmv actual details of make model

Filed with NHTSA, December 2024

Steering
When using lane trace assist as part of the adaptive cruise control the vehicle will violently pull the steering wheel to the left or right out of the lane. This will occur even with vehicles in the lane it pulls to that are detected by the blind spot monitoring system. Brought to a Toyota dealership and they only verified 4 wheel alignment however this did not correct the issue.

Filed with NHTSA, March 2024

Body and structure
There is a vibration sound that occurs when the brake is pressed or depressed. When driving the sound is not present. I brought it to the Smithtown Toyota dealership and they couldn’t find anything and said they heard nothing in the video I sent. After countless hours troubleshooting I traced the sound to the driver well area by the brake and gas pedal. The sound and vibration seems to be transferring from the engine area.

Recalls to confirm (1)

Recall repairs are free at any Toyota dealer, but the seller may never have had them done. Check each campaign number against the VIN.

  1. 24V128000SeatsFeb 2024

Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain 2023-2024 Camry and Camry Hybrid vehicles. The second-row center and right-side seats may have insufficiently welded head restraint brackets. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 202, "Head Restraints.".

Risk: A head restraint bracket that is insufficiently welded may not properly restrain an occupant during a crash, increasing the risk of injury.

Fix: Dealers will replace the 60% rear seat-back frame sub-assembly, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed April 19, 2024. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-800-331-4331. Toyota's numbers for this recall are 24TB04 and 24TA04.
