Which Model 3 is it?
EPA figures for each version of the 2021 Tesla Model 3. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.
| Version | Drive | EPA rating |
|---|---|---|
| Electric | AWD, RWD | 263–353 mi range |
- With a full charge, the range estimate on the dash should land near the EPA figure of 263–353 miles. A much lower number on a mild day can mean a worn battery; ask for a battery health report.
Check the odometer against these mileages
Owners report these failures starting around the mileages below. A car inside one of these ranges deserves a closer look at that part, or records showing it was already fixed.

Why these checks: what owners reported
NHTSA complaints for the 2021 Tesla Model 3, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.
Automatic emergency braking2065 crashes
Hard braking with nothing ahead is the main complaint. It happens on Autopilot, traffic-aware cruise control, and FSD, often at highway speed, with drops like 75 mph to 40 mph in seconds. Common triggers include oncoming trucks on two-lane roads, hill crests, and night driving. Many drivers stop using cruise control after near rear-end collisions. Five crash reports describe the system missing a pedestrian, misreading a highway exit, or speeding up on its own, with four injuries. Some owners say software fixes never arrived or service visits changed nothing.
Acceleration and cruise control1056 crashes
Unintended acceleration at parking speeds is the most serious pattern. Drivers say they press the brake while creeping into a space or pulling away from a stop, and the car surges into buildings, parked cars, or curbs. Six reports involve crashes with four injuries, and one describes a garage crash that killed both occupants. Tesla blames some cases on pedal misapplication, and one owner admits mixing up reverse and drive. Most other complaints describe phantom braking on adaptive cruise control at highway speed, which nearly causes rear-end crashes.
Brakes701 crash
Most of these reports describe phantom braking on cruise control or Autopilot. The car brakes hard on empty highways, from 65 to 20 mph or 75 to 40 mph, and several drivers are nearly rear-ended. Some notice it within the first 2,000 miles. It tends to repeat many times on long trips, and many owners give up on cruise control. A smaller group says the brakes do not stop the car at low speed in driveways, which ends in collisions. Owners who live far from a service center have trouble getting the car checked.
Electrical605 crashes
The heat pump's supermanifold fails and the defroster stops working in freezing weather. Owners just past the 50,000-mile warranty face repair bills of up to $3,900. The touchscreen and car computer freeze or reboot while driving, and some drivers lose the turn signals until the screen comes back. One car caught fire in the dash while charging overnight and was a total loss. Five crash reports describe sudden acceleration while parking or pulling into a garage, plus one stiff brake pedal. Other reports cover a horn that dies after rain and water getting into the trunk button.
Steering249 crashes
The car loses steering control suddenly, usually with no warning, and most of these reports involve crashes. Drivers say the wheel locks during low-speed turns, the car jerks hard into a ditch or the oncoming lane, or it spins out on lightly wet highways. Autosteer failures also lead to crashes and injuries. A failed steering rack disables steering assist and Autopilot, and one owner paid over $3,000 for the replacement. A third-party report blames a fatal crash and fire on a wheel coming off before impact.
Body and structure132 crashes
The rear doors have no mechanical release, so rear passengers can be trapped if the 12V battery or electrical system fails. One owner could not open a door after the battery died. Several owners want a retrofit and note that newer cars have the release, but they say Tesla has no plans to add one. Other complaints include a door handle stuck open, a trunk gap that lets in water, a front trunk latch that opens by itself after replacement, and a rear bumper that falls off after driving through standing water.
Transmission132 crashes
The car loses all power while driving, sometimes only seconds after a pull-over warning and sometimes with charge still showing, which leaves drivers stopped in traffic. Repairs cited include a replaced rear motor inverter and a rear motor disabled fault. The high-voltage battery throws a BMS_a079 error and stops charging, as early as 15,100 miles, and one car has failed twice. Two crash reports describe sudden acceleration. Phantom braking on adaptive cruise control also appears, including braking for one particular highway sign.
Lane keeping83 crashes
FSD jerks toward traffic and won't disengage, and three of these reports involve crashes. Another describes Autopilot giving no warning as a vehicle drifted into its lane. Condensation inside the column camera covers blocks blind-spot detection, auto lane change, and lane departure warning at highway speed. Lane departure alerts also go off falsely during slow turns out of driveways and parking spots. Other complaints cite side camera glare at night and the speakers resetting so warning chimes go quiet.
In owners' own words
Excerpts from complaints Model 3 owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.
Tesla cars are having an issue with phantom breaking which is causing the car to slow down or even slam on the brakes for zero reason. Since I have zero control of how close someone follows me, this is a huge safety issue and makes me fear for my life every time it happens. I drove 60 miles today on two lane roads and this happened at least 6 times. Seems to happen more on two lane roads that aren't flat, but I've had it happen other times too.
Filed with NHTSA, November 2021
The adaptive cruise control system consistently phantom brakes in situations where there is no traffic in front of the vehicle while cresting rolling hills. Sometimes this braking is relatively minor (<5 mph) while other times it is aggressive enough the passengers lurch forward. At the worst, this happened approximately 10 times in 30 miles while going the speed limit of 80mph.
Filed with NHTSA, July 2022
Dangerously brakes for no apparent reason while using adaptive cruise control. Especially common on two-lane roads. Occurs approximately once every 20 miles of driving. Has caused near accidents on three occasions. Tesla does not take any action. Car has the most recent software update.
Filed with NHTSA, January 2022
My Tesla 3 accelerated out of control when parking at my place of work which is a daycare center. I could have killed children, others and myself. My foot was fully pressed on the brake. Tesla is claiming it is driver error. That is false my foot was pressed fully on the brake. Scared to go back in the car. I don’t want that car on the road. I hit the curb went airborne missing a car, sign, brick wall, trees onto an embankment. I have a wittiness too.
Filed with NHTSA, February 2022
It has happened before, but on a 4 hour highway trip yesterday, the vehicle engaged in 3 incidents of sudden phantom braking. Twice the road was completely empty with no other vehicles around me. The third time the shadow of a truck in another lane may have triggered the event. Each time we were traveling over 65 miles per hour. For the last hour+ of the trip, I disengaged the autopilot (adaptive cruise control) feature and drove completely manually.
Filed with NHTSA, May 2022
With the Autopilot engaged on the freeway I have had several of these phantom braking experiences but last night I was lucky to avoid a accident with the car following me.. This happened at 74 miles per hour with the autopilot engaged the brakes slow me down to 60 miles per hour before I could disengage the autopilot.
Filed with NHTSA, February 2022
The supermanifold failed, causing the front defroster to not work properly, resulting in loss of visibility in freezing temperatures. This is a common problem with 2021/2022 model 3/model y with the new heat pump that was supposed to be fixed with a software update, but was not. I now have a $3900 repair bill on a 1 year old car with 56,000 miles. The warranty expired at 50,000 miles. The failure was not a result of negligence.
Filed with NHTSA, December 2022
I have been very cautious on charging my Tesla Model 3 and have followed all of the manufacturer's recommendations. The HV battery recently failed at 105,050 miles. South Korea has noted a battery reliability issue for this year car and model, so I am reporting this to you so if a recall is needed, you can track this. I believe my battery is a Panasonic NCA.
