Which Ioniq 5 is it?
EPA figures for each version of the 2024 Hyundai Ioniq 5. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.
| Version | Drive | EPA rating |
|---|---|---|
| Electric | AWD, RWD | 260–303 mi range |
- With a full charge, the range estimate on the dash should land near the EPA figure of 260–303 miles. A much lower number on a mild day can mean a worn battery; ask for a battery health report.
Check the odometer against these mileages
Owners report these failures starting around the mileages below. A car inside one of these ranges deserves a closer look at that part, or records showing it was already fixed.
ICCU failure and power loss

Why these checks: what owners reported
NHTSA complaints for the 2024 Hyundai Ioniq 5, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.
Electrical862 crashes
The car suddenly loses drive power, and dealers usually trace it to a failed Integrated Charging Control Unit (ICCU). Drivers hear a loud pop, then get warnings to check the electrical system or that power is limited. Speed drops to around 20 mph before the car dies, often in traffic. The 12-volt battery sometimes fails with it. Many failures come before 16,000 miles, some after the recall software fix. Replacement parts are often back-ordered for weeks. Two crash reports describe the car not stopping when the brake was pressed, one with a surge of acceleration.
Transmission25No crashes
The car shuts down completely while driving, and these reports again blame ICCU failure. Often a loud pop comes first. Then a warning says to stop the vehicle and check the power supply, or a low 12-volt battery alert appears. The car drops into limp mode at 25 to 30 mph and can then lose all power, including lights, door locks, and the ability to shift into Park. Several failures happen after all recall updates were done. Failures cluster around 11,000 to 12,000 miles, and replacement parts are back-ordered.
Brakes42 crashes
The brake pedal stops working at low speed, and the car rolls or lurches forward. Reports describe this while stopped at a light, right after shifting into Drive, and while parking. Two of the 4 complaints involve crashes, including one where the car pushed another vehicle through a garage door. Drivers say they could only stop the car by shifting into Park or shutting it off. Another report describes the pedal sinking to the floor and a knocking sound near a stop. One failure came at about 10,000 miles.
Wipers and visibility4No crashes
Rain and snow sit on the sloped rear glass because this model year has no rear wiper, so the view out the back disappears in bad weather. The backup camera also gets wet and becomes hard to see through. Separately, rodents chew through the washer fluid tubing, and the damage can return less than two weeks after a replacement. In another report, the windshield cracked from the A-pillar while the car sat parked.
Lane keeping2No crashes
Driver-assist systems take action on their own in two ways. When backing out of a driveway or parking space, the car stops itself as traffic passes, even when there is plenty of room, and turning off the parking sensors does not help. On the highway, lane-keeping assist sometimes steers into the left lane. This happens most often on right-hand bends in clear, dry conditions, and the driver has to fight the wheel to correct it.
In owners' own words
Excerpts from complaints Ioniq 5 owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.
ICCU needs to be replaced and is faulty.I had a warning on Friday and was able to jump my car, then a complete engine failure Sunday 2.1. The part is on back order, replacedment estimate not given (internet research says 1 week to 3 months) and I am in line for a loaner car even thought all parts are under warranty. The car is less than 2 years old and has less than 24k miles.

Integrated Charging Control Unit (ICCU) failure at 16,000 miles in 2024 Hyundai Ioniq 5. Car was turned on and started to drive and sign said Power System Failure. Then it said Stop Vehicle Immediately. Car would not accelerate but I was close to home. I had it towed to Hyundai and they said it is an ICCU failure and they have no ETA when the part will come in.

The ICCU failed while driving. A loud pop occured then a red warning light came up asking you to stop the vehicle and check the power supply. The car went into turtle mode where I could at best drive 25 miles per hour. This car was part of a recall last year to prevent this issue, however only a software fix was performed. Luckly I was able to get the car home on a very cold day.

The ICCU failed at 11,000 miles and 11 months into the lease. When the ICCU fails, the car becomes inoperable. This was a major safety hazard since it broke down on a major US highway and I was barely able to get off to the side of the road. This seems to be affecting a large number of Ioniq 5 and Ioniq 6 models.

“While stopped at a red light my 2024 Hyundai IONIQ 5, the car moved forward slowly the brake pedal became completely unresponsive and would not slow or stop the vehicle. I had to turn off the engine to bring the car to a stop. This is a complete brake system failure on a vehicle with only approximately 10,000 miles that was purchased new on September 28, 2024. This is a critical safety defect that put myself and others at serious risk.”

1. Brake Failure: recently when my brakes stopped responding while driving. The pedal went all the way to the floor, and I barely managed to stop the car. 2. Knocking sound when braking: I started to notice a clunking/knocking sound that would occur when braking and just about coming to a stop.

It is impossible to see through the back window when it rains. It has no wiper--and unlike other cars, it is not aerodynamic and does not push rain off the back windshield. When it rains, you cannot see anything. Due to the location of the backup camera, it also becomes wet and you cannot see anything when doing in reverse through the window or backup camera when it's raining.
Filed with NHTSA, December 2024
Overnight, the windshield spontaneously developed a huge crack going from the A-pillar to halfway across the windshield. The car was parked at the time.
