Which Rogue is it?
EPA figures for each version of the 2022 Nissan Rogue. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.
| Version | Drive | EPA rating |
|---|---|---|
| 1.5L 3-cyl | AWD, FWD | 31–33 mpg |
| 2.0L 4-cyl | AWD, FWD | 27–28 mpg |
- The 2022 Nissan Rogue was sold in two versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
- Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Rogue that averages well under the EPA 27 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.
Check the odometer against these mileages
Owners report these failures starting around the mileages below. A car inside one of these ranges deserves a closer look at that part, or records showing it was already fixed.
Raw gasoline odor
2,200–5,300 miles
Early reduced-power warnings
4,000–14,912 miles
Engine failure and power loss
38,000–80,000 miles
Why these checks: what owners reported
NHTSA complaints for the 2022 Nissan Rogue, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.
Engine97No crashes
Sudden power loss and full engine failure dominate these reports. Drivers describe an engine malfunction power reduced warning at highway speed, then knocking, stalling, white exhaust vapor, overheating, or coolant found inside the engine. Many cases end with a replacement engine, often between 38,000 and 80,000 miles, and one seized at 17,000. Several owners tie the problem to engine recall 25V-437 and say no remedy is available yet. A smaller pattern involves plastic oil pans whose drain plug threads strip during oil changes.
Stalling, rough running and failure to accelerate fill these filings, and nearly all mention recall 25V437000. The car may refuse to go above 30 to 40 mph, show a power reduced warning, shudder on restart, or blow white smoke before the engine fails. Reported mileages cluster from about 47,600 to 62,279. Much of this category is about the recall itself: the repair part is not yet available, dealers cannot pin down the fault, and owners say the wait has run too long.
Transmission243 crashes
Engine and turbo trouble dominates even under this heading. Owners report shaking, rattling, limp mode capped near 35 to 40 mph, sudden power loss at highway speed, and smoke from the exhaust. Many tie it to recall 25V-437 and its delayed remedy. Some cars needed new engines, turbochargers or EGR parts, and a few failed again after repair. One CVT was replaced after repeated power reduced warnings. Three crashes are reported. Two involve a parked vehicle rolling away, and one a skid in snow with no ABS or traction control response.
Fuel system22No crashes
Raw gasoline smell is the core complaint. It comes through the vents, especially with the heat on, and fills a closed garage after the car is parked. Owners report headaches, dizziness and nausea and worry about fire. The smell often starts within the first few thousand miles. Dealers usually find no leak, say the engine is under engineering review, and offer no fix. One EVAP canister valve replacement did not help. A separate report describes the gas pedal sticking at full throttle.
A strong gasoline odor in the garage and cabin after driving shows up within the first few months, around 3,000 miles in one report. No warning lights come on. Dealers inspect the car and find nothing, or say Nissan knows about the issue but has no remedy. One dealer blamed the winter fuel blend. Owners worry about fire. A separate report describes a failed fuel pump at about 3,900 miles, with parts on back order.
Electrical11No crashes
Backup cameras and the infotainment head unit fail most often. Screens go blank or stop responding, and owners say Nissan offers no fix outside a rental-car recall. Other reports describe the car dropping from 70 to 40 mph without warning, every dash light flashing before a stall, hard starting, Bluetooth calls that cut out, a rear window lowering itself, and fuel range readouts that disagree. Repeat dealer visits without a lasting repair come up again and again.
Steering71 crash
Front tie rods fracture or bend, locking a wheel or pulling the car to one side. One failure came at 50,000 miles, and one crash followed a popping sound and a detached tire. The other repeated fault is the menu selector on the left of the steering wheel, which sticks and blocks access to driver-assist settings. Owners say the only offer is a new steering wheel, often paid out of pocket after warranty. One report describes a sudden loss of both steering and braking control.
Acceleration and cruise control61 crash
Sudden reduced-power mode is one pattern. The car drops to 20 mph, or from 70 to 40 mph in traffic, sometimes again after dealer repairs. One case came at 14,912 miles. The other is unintended acceleration: a throttle that holds at 90 to 100 mph despite braking, or engine speed staying high after the pedal is released, even in park. One owner reports hitting a parking garage wall shortly after a dealer returned the car.
Body and structure4No crashes
Water leaks are the main structural complaint. Heavy rain and car washes push water into the cabin around the sunroof and roof, staining the A-pillar trim and, in one case, leading to mold. Owners cite technical service bulletins but no recall. One leak began after the roof bars were replaced at 52,000 miles. Two reports describe rear doors that will not open from inside or outside, which owners flag as an emergency-exit hazard.
In owners' own words
Excerpts from complaints Rogue owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.
My Vehicle has 3,700 miles on it and i have smelled a very intense fuel smell in the cabin of the vehicle at least 6 times mostly when the interior fan is not set to recirculate the air, i took the vehicle to my local nissan service center and they could find no issues but said this is a complaint that others have also made. I am concerned that there could be a fire from the fumes that are being released.

Engine failure with less than 44,000 miles on the car. Engine just failed and shut of while traveling down the road. Car is sitting in a Nissan dealerships lot with absolutely no news on what is happening. There were no known issues with the car at the time of the engine failure, it just happened all the sudden

Complete engine failure. My wife broke down on the side of the road. Was told it was a Turbo Charger failure that then allowed coolant to get into the engine. Was further told it needs a new Turbo Charger Assembly as well as various other parts for the engine that were damaged as a result. Happened with only 39k miles on the vehicle.

Vehicle started shaking and making noise. Engine light came on and within 30 seconds car went dead. I’m an elderly person traveling with wife and grandchildren. On highway at 70 mph. 21,000 miles. Has been towed to dealer. No diagnosis yet. Third day moving slow. Very disappointed and scared.

I am joining the many others in reporting a very strong fuel order (raw gasoline) that enters the cabin and when parked in the garage, spews tons of raw gasoline fume, which I believe could eventually cause fire/explosion. This makes the SUV very difficult to be inside and drive. We do have the 3cyl turbo engine. Current mileage is approximately 3200. Dealer reports unable to verify and cannot proceed due to the SUV being in "engineering status".

After owning the car for about four months, the car smells like gasoline. The smell of gasoline fills the cabin and if parked in the home, the whole house smells of gasoline. My children get sick if they have to be in the car for more than 45 minutes. Nissan of Boulder claims that the fuel system is working fine, but it is not. Other owners of 2022 Nissan Rogue are experiencing the same problem without any remedy or recall from Nissan corporation.

Engine: Ever since purchasing my rogue i had to take it to the dealership 3 separate times for engine mounts to be replaced due to shaking when car is idle. Electrical: Camera system stops working all of a sudden at 50k miles and unable to use reverse camera and will not work when clicking on camera button. This has been a known issue affecting personal vehicles and being discussed all online.
Filed with NHTSA, March 2025
Camera system failure and it has been a year with no response from Nissan. A recall was made for this issue but it was only for rental cars mine was never a rental and other nissan rogue owners are reporting the same issue with their cars. I park inside a parking garage so my car is covered.
