Which Terrain is it?

EPA figures for each version of the 2022 GMC Terrain. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.

VersionDriveEPA rating
1.5L 4-cylAWD, FWD26–27 mpg
  • Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Terrain that averages well under the EPA 26 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Check the odometer against these mileages

Owners report these failures starting around the mileages below. A car inside one of these ranges deserves a closer look at that part, or records showing it was already fixed.

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2022 GMC Terrain, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Fuel system25No crashes

The engine shuts off without warning, sometimes at 45 to 55 mph, and will not restart. Shops trace it to the fuel pump power control module, often logging code P129F. Some cars show a check engine or low battery warning. Others show nothing. The shifter can stick in park and the brake pedal can lock. Several modules fail twice, including after the recall repair, and some VINs are left out of recall 23V013000. Out-of-warranty fixes run several hundred dollars. After the recall, some fuel gauges read empty on a full tank, with a parts wait of 6 to 8 months.

Stalls and sudden loss of power hit at parking-lot and highway speeds, including 60 mph on a busy road, and the car often will not restart. Dealers and independent shops mostly blame the fuel pump module, and it sometimes fails again after replacement. Many reports cover recall 23V013000. Recall parts are unavailable for some cars, and several stall at only 3,600 to 7,000 miles while waiting. One report adds a gasoline smell in the cabin. Failures run as high as 76,670 miles.

  • Electrical7No crashes

Screens go dark while driving. The center display goes black, and the digital instrument cluster dies completely and needs replacement. The infotainment screen freezes at startup, the backup camera stays on after shifting to drive, and the screen and audio keep running after the car is locked, followed by hard starts. OnStar module failures come with nationwide backorders. One car loses the turn signal sound, collision warning, and OnStar at 22,000 miles. Separate reports describe misfires, power liftgate trouble, and reduced power with a burning smell.

  • Transmission7No crashes

In extreme cold the check engine light comes on and the car drops into reduced engine power, or limp mode, at highway speed. Owners report code P0299, and a dealer blames ice and condensation. One owner finds water pouring from the intercooler. Other reports describe the car shutting off at 60 mph with a service transmission warning and shifting into park, which makes steering hard. Others include a fuel pump power control module failure at 12,777 miles that leaves the shifter stuck, and white exhaust smoke with hesitation and jerking.

  • Engine6No crashes

Most reports describe a stall that feels like running out of gas. The car loses power at a light or on the road, will not restart, and in some cases will not leave park. Some owners are told their VIN is not under recall. A smaller group reports full engine failure needing replacement, including a failed piston with broken rings at 60,300 miles. Other complaints mention code P0171 with hesitation and jerking, a fuel gauge reading empty on a full tank, and the car shifting or shutting off by itself.

  • Steering3No crashes

During right turns at intersections, the wheel locks briefly as Service ESC and traction control warnings appear. The fault comes and goes. Dealers cannot reproduce it, and one dealer reprograms the computers and checks the brake module. In a separate report, the car shuts off several times with adaptive cruise control engaged, slowing from 76 to 34 mph in seconds while the steering stops working. Both patterns create a loss-of-control risk in traffic.

In owners' own words

Excerpts from complaints Terrain owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.

Fuel system
This is the second time this occurred, once in Oct 2024 and on 1/25/25. While driving the check engine light came on and within one minute the vehicle began to stall and within 20 second the engine shut off. The first time it happened in the middle of the road and the second time I was just able to turn onto a side street. In both cases the vehicle would not restart and left me stranded.

Fuel system
Own 2022 terrain that suddenly stalled one morning after starting vehicle with remote access before getting on highway. Vehicle cut off after 5 minutes and wouldn’t restart. Battery very strong but check engine light came on. Vehicle was towed to dealership and advise it was the fuel pump control module. No warning lights or proper failures for my vehicle.

Filed with NHTSA, July 2025

Electrical
The vehicle has been having misfires and power liftgate since owning the vehicle. The vehicle has been to multiple dealerships and I have to this very day put 15k miles on the vehicle. Needless to say GM has not been any help in getting the problem taken care of. I have sent GM video of the vehicle misfire. I finally have conformation that the vehicle has had 53 misfires.

Electrical
OnStar module failure Its backordered across the entire country, its only reasonable to assume it's a problem. Online information I've seen is it's an issue with a lot of vehicles

Filed with NHTSA, February 2025

Transmission
On Aug 3rd 2023 I was driving east on a Michigan Highway when the service transmission warning came across the dash then the car shut off while driving 60mph. When trying to steer the car to the side of the road I noticed the car was in park(this car is equipped with push button shift). The car shutting off made it very hard to steer. If the traffic was heavy this could have caused an accident. I do have a video of this happening

Filed with NHTSA, August 2023

Transmission
The car went into limp mode while I was on the highway. The car said reducing engine power and then I couldn't go the speed limit I had to drive well under the speed limit and pull off the road as soon as possible. I brought it home and water came pouring out the intercooler after looking online. I found out this is a known issue for this vehicle.

Filed with NHTSA, December 2025

Engine
Engine failure at low mileage. 60,300 miles. Piston 1 failed. Broken rings. Needs full engine replacement. GM will not stand by their product and repair it.

Filed with NHTSA, January 2025

Engine
Vehicle felt like it was running out of gas and then stalled out while driving down the road. It will not turn over and it will not move out of park. This is a huge safety issue.

Recalls to confirm (4)

Recall repairs are free at any GMC dealer, but the seller may never have had them done. Check each campaign number against the VIN.

  1. 23V339000Child SeatMay 2023

General Motors, LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2020-2023 Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain vehicles. The four rear-seat lower child seat LATCH anchorage bars may have excessive powder coating, which could prevent a child seat from being installed with the anchorage bars. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 225, "Child Restraint Anchorage Systems.".

Risk: The inability to install a child seat with the LATCH anchorage bars could result in an unsecured child seat, increasing the risk of injury in a crash.

Fix: Owners are advised to install child seats using the vehicle's rear seat belts until the remedy is complete. Dealers will inspect the latch anchorage bars, and remove and replace the finish, as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed June 2, 2023. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020 or GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782. GM's number for this recall is N232403240.

General Motors, LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2021-2022 Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain vehicles equipped with certain Hankook tires. The tires may have been manufactured with an insufficient amount of curative agent, which could cause tread separation.

Risk: Tread separation can result in a loss of vehicle control, increasing the risk of a crash.
