Which Rogue is it?

EPA figures for each version of the 2024 Nissan Rogue. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.

VersionDriveEPA rating
1.5L 3-cylAWD, FWD31–33 mpg
  • Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Rogue that averages well under the EPA 31 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Check the odometer against these mileages

Owners report these failures starting around the mileages below. A car inside one of these ranges deserves a closer look at that part, or records showing it was already fixed.

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2024 Nissan Rogue, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Transmission34No crashes

Sudden power loss is the main pattern. The dash shows "Engine Malfunction Power Reduced Service Now," and the car drops into limp mode or stalls in traffic and on freeways. Many of these reports come from one fleet that filed nearly identical complaints. Other owners describe complete failure of the VC Turbo engine, an engine that locks up while driving, metal found in the engine, and melted spark plugs at about 25,924 miles. Two injuries are reported. Several owners say dealers and Nissan refused engine replacement or said a recall did not apply.

  • Electrical11No crashes

Infotainment screens black out, freeze, or show green lines. When that happens, the backup camera, navigation, audio, and hands-free calling all stop working. Several owners say the problem began at delivery. Screen replacement does not always fix it, replacement parts are back ordered, and dealers say no software fix exists yet. Other reports describe the body control module going to sleep so lights fail to come on, all dash screens going dark at highway speed, and unwanted acceleration or steering assist. A few engine stalls are also filed here.

  • Wipers and visibility10No crashes

Rear glass shatters without warning, at highway speed, at stoplights, and while parked. Drivers hear a loud bang, and glass enters the cabin. Freezing temperatures, rear defrost use, and remote starting come up often, but some failures happen in mild weather. One replacement window shattered again about a month later. A fleet operator reports the same failure on at least 8 Rogues. Owners say Nissan offers no help, even under a paid extended warranty.

  • Engine10No crashes

The car loses power, shows "Engine Malfunction," and goes into limp mode or stalls, sometimes at highway speeds. Several cars are towed to dealers. Diagnoses include a failed EGR valve at under 11,000 miles and a full engine replacement at 11,838 miles. In one case the engine failed again 9 days after replacement. Reported failure mileages run from about 11,000 to 45,000. Other owners describe grinding on gentle acceleration, weak power when accelerating hard, and unusual engine noises.

A turbocharger failure is the only detailed report in this category. While accelerating at 35 mph, the car shook and shut off, and the check engine light came on. The dealer diagnosed a failed turbocharger that needed replacement, and the car had not been repaired. The owner linked the failure to recall campaign 25V437000, but the VIN was not covered, and the manufacturer offered no help. The other complaint contains only an attachment.

  • Body and structure5No crashes

The rear hatch glass shatters while the car sits parked or right after a front door is closed. Dealers tell owners there is no warranty coverage or recall for the glass, and one owner cites a $450 replacement plus cleanup. A separate report says the power liftgate closes while someone is still standing behind the car, pinning them against the rear bumper with no warning. That owner says the problem is repeatable and appeared on the first day.

  • Acceleration and cruise control41 crash

Adaptive cruise control brakes on its own, dropping from 75 mph to 55 to 60 mph with no vehicle ahead, then speeds back up. Owners also report cruise shutting off after a false "Slippery Road" message in dry weather, and the forward collision system switching off and jerking the car in traffic. Dealers often find nothing wrong. One crash with an injury is reported: the car lurched while in park in a driveway and struck a vehicle, a fence, and a house.

  • Airbags22 crashes

In both reported crashes, nothing deploys and the driver's head strikes the steering wheel. One owner also says the collision avoidance system did not react and the engine kept running after the impact with no warning lights, so the driver had to shut it off. Both reports involve injuries. With only two filings, there is no broader pattern yet, but non-deployment in a crash is a serious failure.

  • Wheels and tires2No crashes

Early tire wear and tire condition are the two issues here. One owner was told the car needed new tires at 18,000 miles. The other report is about dry-rotted tires sold by a business. Those tires made a loud grinding noise at freeway speed and would not hold air, and the seller offered no solution. That complaint is about a sale, not a factory defect. Only two reports were filed, so no clear pattern shows.

In owners' own words

Excerpts from complaints Rogue owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.

Transmission
Car was driving rough, with hesitation with acceleration and MIL lamp was flashing. Car with only 25,924 miles ( bought with 24,641miles). Dealership said 3 plugs have melted which is not normal wear and tear. Nissan still trying to figure out if it's under warranty and said it is not part of recall. It's possible that this car has the recalled vct transmission and recall should be expanded because this is a serious safety issue.

This is a Company Vehicle and as part of our Fleet of 160 various Vehicle models. I am the Fleet supervisor of this Company Safety Concern: Error message will show in the Dash "Engine malfunction reduced speed service now", and will suddenly stop in the middle of the road or freeway. This is the 9th same vehicle model we reported in your safety concern reporting portal.

Electrical
Infotainment system malfunctions, screen freezes or goes black when trying to use back up camera. CarPlay malfunctions regularly, Bluetooth fails to connect phone. Car changes temperature to Celsius frequently even changes back after reverting to Fahrenheit. Transmission has a juddering (skipping) feel when trying to maintain speed.

Wipers and visibility
On 12/16/25 at approximately 6:30am central time, the rear back glass spontaneously shattered while driving to work. The outside temperature was below 30 degrees causing some frost build up. I turned on the rear defrost, and within a few minutes, I heard a loud pop and then a cracking, crumbling like noise and looked back to see the glass was completely shattered.

Wipers and visibility
Rear windshield/window spontaneously shattered and then fell apart after remote-starting in freezing (below 32⁰F) temperatures. I have photos. Nissan says there's nothing they can do (even with the expensive bumper to bumper warranty we paid for). If this had happened while we were driving my family could've been hurt by flying glass.

Engine
After shopping, I attempted to start my car and received the "ENGINE MALFUNCTION Reduced Power, Service Now" warning. Thankfully, I was not driving when this happened, as the car had no power to move! It is currently in the dealership, where they state it is an EGR valve -- on a vehicle with less than 11,000 miles on it. Had I been on the highway and this happened - no power -- I only hope I could have coasted to the roadside without being hit!

Engine
There’s an open recall for my year and engine but have not received a recall letter and zero recalls show open. My car as a grinding noise when accelerating slowly and the engine power is very low when accelerating fast and almost red lines at 30 miles per hour but eventually catches up and goes to normal. Also while driving it feels the car is sucking fumes at times with a full tank of fuel.

Recalls to confirm (2)

Recall repairs are free at any Nissan dealer, but the seller may never have had them done. Check each campaign number against the VIN.

  1. 25V437000EngineJun 2025

Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain 2021-2024 Rogue, 2019-2020 Altima, 2019-2022 Infiniti QX50, and 2022 Infiniti QX55 vehicles equipped with 3-cylinder 1.5L or 4-cylinder 2.0L variable compression turbo (VC-Turbo) engines. The engine bearings may have manufacturing defects that can lead to engine failure.

Risk: Engine failure increases the risk of a crash. A bearing failure may cause a breach in the engine block, allowing hot oil to be discharged, increasing the risk of an engine fire.

Fix: Dealers will reprogram the engine control module (ECM) software, free of charge. Owner letters were mailed February 2, 2026. Owners may contact Nissan's customer service at 800-647-7261 or Infiniti's customer service at 1-800-662-6200. Nissan's numbers for this recall are R25A8/A9 and R25B1/B2.

  2. 24V748000Backup cameraOct 2024

Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain 2024-2025 Rogue and 2025 INFINITI QX80 vehicles. A software error may cause the rearview camera to display a blank screen when the vehicle is in reverse. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 111, "Rear Visibility.".

Risk: The loss of the rearview camera image while in reverse can reduce the driver's rear visibility, increasing the risk of a crash.

Fix: The in-vehicle infotainment software will be updated by an over-the-air (OTA) software update or by a dealer, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed December 2, 2024. Owners may contact Nissan's customer service at 800-647-7261 or INFINITI's customer service at 1-800-662-6200. Nissan's numbers for this recall are R24B3 and R24B4.
