Which Escape is it?

EPA figures for each version of the 2022 Ford Escape. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.

VersionDriveEPA rating
1.5L 3-cylGasAWD, FWD28–30 mpg
2.0L 4-cylGasAWD26 mpg
2.5L 4-cylHybridFWD, 4WD40–41 mpg

  • The 2022 Ford Escape was sold in four versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
  • On the hybrid, watch for the car moving off on electric power at low speed and for any hybrid system warning on the dash.
  • Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Escape that averages well under the EPA 26 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Check the odometer against these mileages

Owners report these failures starting around the mileages below. A car inside one of these ranges deserves a closer look at that part, or records showing it was already fixed.

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2022 Ford Escape, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Engine63No crashes

Fire is the most serious pattern, with 4 of 63 complaints describing flames under the hood. Some fires start while driving, after a fuel smell, smoke, or a metallic ticking sound. One car caught fire while parked. Other reports describe the engine quitting at highway speed, taking power steering and power braking with it, and one car needed a replacement engine at about 30,000 miles. Oil leaks also appear. Most filings, though, come from owners waiting on an open recall repair whose parts the dealer says are not available.

  • Fuel system52No crashes

Most of these filings are about a recall repair, not a breakdown. Owners say dealers cannot get the parts and give no timeline, and some have stopped driving out of fear of fire. Where failures do occur, the car is hard to start right after refueling and may need several tries. It also stalls at stoplights and at low speeds, hesitates and jerks, and shows a fluctuating idle. A check engine light appears, and one dealer found a failed fuel injector at about 44,000 miles.

  • Electrical38No crashes

Screens and the instrument cluster go dark while driving, so the driver loses the speedometer and warning lights. When the displays come back, a burst of alerts often follows, such as AWD disabled, AdvanceTrac service, cruise control off, a shift system fault, and in some cases lost power steering. Dealers often fail to fix it after software updates, battery replacement, and weeks of shop time. Other reports cover a dead backup camera, an unresponsive infotainment screen, a power window stuck down, and a tail light that keeps failing. Some owners are also waiting on recall parts.

  • Brakes372 crashes

Grinding, moaning, or squealing from the rear brakes in reverse is the main complaint. The noise is often louder in humid or wet weather. Dealers call it a known issue, but new pads, rotors, and caliper hardware often fail to stop it. Heavy front brake dust and early pad and rotor wear also appear. More serious reports describe a pedal that sinks to the floor, a hard pedal with longer stops, or stops that pulse and skip. Two complaints involve crashes after the brakes failed to stop the car.

  • Transmission33No crashes

The transmission shifts hard, hesitates, gets stuck in one gear, or drops into neutral while accelerating at highway speed, cutting power in traffic. Some cars refuse to shift into Park, show a Powertrain Fault message, or log code P068A. Dealers often cannot reproduce the problem at first. Several cases end with a transmission rebuild or replacement, including one at 48,000 miles and another at 65,000, just past warranty. A few complaints also mention fuel smell and emissions faults that turn on the check engine light.

  • Body and structure25No crashes

The driver door check arm or its spot welds break loose. The door then pops, creaks, and becomes hard to open or close, and dealers often say no recall or warranty covers it. The power liftgate is the other main concern. It comes down on people while they load cargo, causing head and shoulder injuries, and one hatch opened while driving. Owners also report a passenger door opening while moving, sharp metal edges in the cargo area, and a rear window that came loose.

  • Acceleration and cruise control63 crashes

The car speeds up on its own, sometimes right after the driver touches the brake or changes cruise control settings. In some cases cruise control jumps to 74 or 80 mph. Three of the six complaints involve crashes, including a car that hit a tree after accelerating on its own during a slow turn. Another report describes the steering locking up and a crash into a guardrail. Dealers usually find no codes and cannot duplicate the problem.

  • Airbags52 crashes

Front air bags fail to deploy and seatbelts fail to hold occupants in serious crashes, including a rear-end impact and a T-bone collision that left people hurt. Other complaints describe an air bag warning light that keeps coming back, rear seat restraint warnings, and a driver seatbelt that does not lock when the driver leans forward. Mechanics have not found a cause for the warning lights.

In owners' own words

Excerpts from complaints Escape owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.

Engine
There is a significant amount of engine oil leak. Confirmed by an employee at auto zone. We were worries about the recall as it was exactly what the recall said, that the engine might explode. The problem confirmed at auto zone. We called the ford service center, they said the don't have this recall code in their system so they transferred the call to corporate office. the corporate office said someone will call us but nobody called.

Engine
This vehicle has had the same recall for under hood fire risk two or three times. I have taken it in for all recalls but this one cannot be resolved. I contacted Ford in October and asked for help. I cannot get it fixed, I cannot sell the vehicle and now I’m scared to continue driving it. Ford refused to buy it back and I feel this has gone in long enough. Please help me fight Ford and get this resolved! Thank you.
