Which Rogue is it?

EPA figures for each version of the 2018 Nissan Rogue. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.

VersionDriveEPA rating
2.0L 4-cylGasAWD, FWD27–28 mpg
2.5L 4-cylGasAWD, FWD27–29 mpg
2.0L 4-cylHybridAWD, FWD33–34 mpg
  • The 2018 Nissan Rogue was sold in three versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
  • On the hybrid, watch for the car moving off on electric power at low speed and for any hybrid system warning on the dash.
  • Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Rogue that averages well under the EPA 27 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2018 Nissan Rogue, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Brakes1874 crashes

The brakes slam on by themselves with nothing ahead, usually at 25 to 55 mph, often with a grinding noise and a dash warning. Occupants report whiplash and being thrown into the steering wheel, and drivers behind have to swerve. A smaller group reports the opposite problem: a pedal that goes hard or only halfway down, ending in rear-end crashes. Dealers often cannot reproduce the fault. Owners describe software updates and repeated radar sensor replacements, and many say the braking came back afterward. The filings record 10 injuries.

  • Electrical965 crashes

False automatic emergency braking dominates here too, and several owners say it returned after the software update. The navigation screen, gauge cluster, and climate controls can shut off and reboot while driving. Engine stalls are blamed on a shorted ignition harness or a failed engine wiring harness, and both repairs are expensive. Backup camera blackouts and failed sensors at state inspection also appear. Five complaints involve crashes, including cases where automatic braking or ABS did not engage before impact.

  • Automatic emergency braking832 crashes

The car brakes hard with no obstacle at speeds up to 65 mph, often with a grinding or rumble-strip sound and only a brief warning. Many cases begin within the first 1,000 miles, and intersections and railroad tracks are frequent triggers. Radar obstruction messages and AEB malfunction lights keep appearing even after the recall repair. Dealers cite technical service bulletin 18-041A and have reprogrammed or replaced the control unit. In a few reports the system did the opposite and failed to stop the car before a low-speed collision.

  • Transmission461 crash

The CVT transmission jerks, hesitates, revs high without picking up speed, or drops into a limited-power mode near 40 mph. Owners report full failures needing a new transmission between 46,000 and 110,000 miles, sometimes leaving drivers stranded or losing power in highway traffic. Dealers often find no fault codes. One dealer quoted at least $5,500 for a replacement. A separate report describes the vehicle rolling backward after being shut off and injuring the owner.

  • Airbags3516 crashes

Serious collisions end with no deployment at all, including front impacts, side impacts, and rear-end hits at 50 mph or more. In several of these crashes the car was totaled. Reported injuries include a fractured vertebra, head strikes on the steering wheel, and neck and back sprains. Other reports describe only some bags firing, a seat side bag burning the driver, and a power driver's seat reclining on impact. Across 35 complaints, 20 injuries are recorded.

  • Acceleration and cruise control273 crashes

Unintended acceleration while parking or braking leads to crashes into homes and other vehicles, with owners saying the brake pedal did not stop the car. Automatic emergency braking also stops the car with nothing ahead. Radar cruise control drops out or slows abruptly in rain, bright sun, or on bumpy roads, and is slow to react when other cars cut in. A few owners say speed stays stuck below 40 mph, along with shaking, erratic RPM, and power loss that clears after a restart.

  • Engine26No crashes

Hesitation, shuddering, and stalling are the main complaints, especially when pulling away from a stop. Owners often see high RPM, a check engine light, or a malfunction message. Some of these cases trace back to the CVT rather than the engine. Isolated reports include a cracked engine block, an engine replacement at 45,000 miles, stalls tied to the AEB control module, and power loss when snow clogs the air intake filter. Dealers frequently find no fault codes.

  • Steering195 crashes

The wheel locks up, stiffens, or stops responding, sometimes after a malfunction message or when the engine cuts out. Several of these events ended in crashes into guardrails, medians, or trees, and the reports list 8 injuries. One fire-related report followed driving on a spare tire that did not match the other tires. Other complaints describe wheel vibration from new, power steering loss at low speed, torn lower control arm bushings, and uneven tire wear traced to the rack and pinion and tie rods.

Brakes
i am driving a 2018 Nissan rogue, currently has 65000miles on it. May 1st 2022 8 pm, while i was driving at 35 miles per hour, the car suddenly triggered its emergency brake and brought the car to a full stop in the middle of the road. there is no obstruction around me at all. imagine this happens on a heavy traffic highway, i can be killed this way.

Brakes
I was driving about 20mph or less on a street, there was no one in front or back of me luckily. But all of sudden my sensors started blinking my car started to break on its own like wheels starting to lock the sensors blinked so fast I couldn't see what it was as I was watching road to make sure no one is around. It did it a few seconds and I was able to press on gas pedal and keep driving. If someone was in back of me I would of got in a accident.

Automatic emergency braking
My rogue has randomly just gave me a warning and slammed on my breaks without an obstacle in site. Now the malfunction light keeps coming on. This is starting to get very frustrating. I have on this car for 3 years. It only had 19000 miles on it when purchased. It now has 81000. I am afraid this is going to cause a fatal accident.

Filed with NHTSA, July 2024

Automatic emergency brakingCrash reported
Front collision sensor failed to alert the driver and stop the car resulting in a collision. Traveling speed just over 5 mph. Safety system was turned on and should have been operational. No warnings the sensor was dirty and not functioning properly.

Filed with NHTSA, April 2024

Transmission
Transmission Failed and needed to be replaced with less than 60,000 Miles. There is a known issue with other Transmissions in the same year for this vehicle and mine should not be included.

Filed with NHTSA, November 2023

Transmission
Piston rod broke and fell through oil pan causing damage. Ultimately resulting on car shutting down on freeway and having to be towed in the early hours of the morning. This could’ve resulted in major accident putting myself and others lives in danger. I’m unsure if problem has been reproduced. Vehicle has yet to be inspected by manufacturer. There were no warnings messages or symptoms previous to what happened.

Recalls to confirm (4)

Recall repairs are free at any Nissan dealer, but the seller may never have had them done. Check each campaign number against the VIN.

  1. 23V093000ElectricalFeb 2023

Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain 2014-2020 Rogue and 2017-2022 Rogue Sport vehicles equipped with a jackknife style ignition key. The jackknife key may collapse into a folded position while driving.

Risk: Driver contact with a key in the collapsed position could inadvertently shut off the vehicle while driving, increasing the risk of a crash. Additionally, if the vehicle shuts off while driving, the air bags may not deploy in a crash as intended, increasing the risk of injury.

Fix: Dealers will insert a spacer into the key slot of the jackknife key, free of charge. Interim notification letters notifying owners of the safety risk were mailed March 29, 2023. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed August 30, 2023. Owners may contact Nissan's customer service at 1-800-867-7669. Nissan's number for this recall is R22C5.

  2. 22V549000BrakesJul 2022

Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain 2017-2019 Rogue Hybrid vehicles. The hydraulic brake booster assembly may overheat internally, resulting in a loss of power brake assist. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 135, "Light Vehicle Brake Systems.".

Risk: A loss of power brake assist can extend the distance required to stop the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.

Fix: Dealers will replace the hydraulic brake booster supply unit, free of charge. Interim Owner notification letters were mailed September 22, 2022. A second letter will be mailed October 31, 2022. Owners may contact Nissan's customer service at 1-800-867-7669. Nissan's number for this recall is R22A6.

  3. 21V839000EngineOct 2021

Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain 2017-2019 Rogue Hybrid vehicles. Contact with the Electronic Control Module (ECM) bracket may damage the engine harness, causing a blown fuse.

Risk: A blown fuse may cause an engine stall, increasing the risk of a crash.

Fix: Dealers will install a harness protector cover, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed December 16, 2021. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-867-7669. Nissan's number for this recall is R21B6.

  4. 19V654000Backup cameraSep 2019

Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain 2018-2019 Nissan Altima, Armada, Frontier, Kicks, Leaf, Maxima, Murano, NV, NV200, Pathfinder, Rogue, Rogue Sport, Sentra, Titan, Titan Diesel, Versa Note and Versa Sedan vehicles, as well as Infiniti Q50, Q60, QX30 and QX80 vehicles. Additionally included are 2019 Nissan GT-R and Taxi and Infiniti QX50, QX60, Q70, Q70L vehicles. The back-up camera and display settings can be adjusted such that the rear view image is no longer visible and the system will retain that setting the next time the vehicle is placed in reverse. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 111, "Rear Visibility.".

Risk: The lack of an image in the back-up camera display increases the risk of a crash.

Fix: Nissan will notify owners in phases, having dealers update the back-up camera settings software, free of charge. The recall began November 11, 2019 and all affected VINs should be activated. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-867-7669 or INFINITI customer service at 1-800-662-6200.
