2021 Sportage

34 owner complaints
  • Engine 10
  • Electrical 3
  • Trailer Hitches 2

Worth adding to your 2022 checks

  • Pull the dipstick before the test drive. A low level on a recently serviced car points to oil burning.
  • Ask for oil change records and any dealer oil consumption test results.
  • Run the VIN for open recalls, including engine and trailer hitch campaigns, and confirm each repair was completed.

2020 Sportage

139 owner complaints
  • Engine 54
  • Electrical 15
  • Brakes 10

Worth adding to your 2022 checks

  • Pull the dipstick and confirm the oil is full; a low level soon after a change points to oil burning.
  • Ask for complete oil change records, since owners report Kia denying engine claims without them.
  • Run the VIN for open recalls, including brake campaign 21V137000 and the tow hitch harness fire fix.

2019 Sportage

63 owner complaints
  • Engine 20
  • Electrical 9
  • Transmission 6

Worth adding to your 2022 checks

  • Pull the dipstick before the test drive. A low level soon after an oil change points to oil burning.
  • Ask for service records showing oil top-offs, dealer oil consumption tests, or an engine replacement.
  • Listen at idle for knocking and feel for shaking. Walk away if the check engine light flashes.

Which Sportage is it?

EPA figures for each version of the 2022 Kia Sportage. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.

VersionDriveEPA rating

2.4L 4-cylAWD, FWD23–26 mpg
  • The 2022 Kia Sportage was sold in two versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
  • Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Sportage that averages well under the EPA 21 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2022 Kia Sportage, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Engine11No crashes

Oil runs out between changes, and the engine then knocks, ticks, or locks up. A flashing check engine light and a sudden drop to crawling speed on the highway are common symptoms. Most of these cases end with the engine being replaced. Kia often denies warranty claims over maintenance records when oil changes were done outside the dealer. Two fires start under the hood, one while parked and one while stopped at a light. Other reports describe hard starting, sputtering, and overheating.

  • Electrical52 crashes

The car shuts off while driving or will not start, and one parked car catches fire with no warning. Other reports describe a shaky idle, long cranking, a touchscreen that goes black, and false forward collision alerts that apply the brakes. Two crashes fall in this category. In one, the brakes stop responding and no warning lights come on. In the other, the forward collision warning never lights before a rear-end impact. Dealers sometimes find nothing wrong.

  • Trailer Hitches4No crashes

Most reports in this category are about a recall on the Kia-branded trailer hitch, not a failure on the road. The repair part is not available, and both dealers and Kia confirm the shortage. Waits stretch to almost 18 months, which leaves a paid-for hitch that cannot be used. One report says a short circuit is the reason for the recall. Most say no failure has happened.

  • Automatic emergency braking31 crash

Automatic emergency braking slams on with nothing ahead at around 35 to 40 mph, and the only warning is a long beep. The events repeat over months, including in rain and darkness, and dealers do not find a fault. The opposite failure also shows up: the forward collision warning stays silent before a rear-end crash. Hard braking at speed can throw the driver out of position and invites a rear-end hit from following traffic.

  • Transmission3No crashes

The engine drops into limp mode and loses power until the car crawls along or stalls. Reports mention a flashing warning light, code P1326, and a cylinder 3 misfire that turns into internal engine damage needing a full engine replacement. Oil loss between services appears before one failure. Two of the reports involve losing power on the freeway, which is a real collision risk.

  • Wipers and visibility3No crashes

Sunroof glass shatters without any impact, sometimes at highway speed, and glass falls into the cabin. The break looks like it came from the inside, with no rock strike or debris. The reports include a car at 4200 miles and another at 42,000 miles. One car also loses a side window when the door is closed. None of these reports includes a diagnosed cause, and one says Kia offers no remedy.

  • Airbags22 crashes

Deployment fails in serious crashes. In a rollover after a side impact, every bag deploys except the one in the steering wheel, and the driver suffers fractured bones. In a separate highway collision, emergency braking, the collision alert, and the air bags all fail to activate. Both reports involve crashes, and neither describes a warning light beforehand.

  • Steering21 crash

Both reports in this category are about theft, not a steering defect. Thieves treat the car as an easy target. One theft linked to a social media trend ends in a crash, and another leaves the owner wanting out of a lease. Neither report describes a mechanical problem with the steering.

In owners' own words

Recalls to confirm (1)

Recall repairs are free at any Kia dealer, but the seller may never have had them done. Check each campaign number against the VIN.

  1. 22V703000Trailer HitchesPark outsideSep 2022

Kia America, Inc. (Kia) is recalling certain 2016-2022 Sorento, 2021-2022 Sorento Hybrid (HEV), 2022-2023 Sorento Plug-In Hybrid (PHEV), and 2017-2022 Sportage vehicles equipped with a tow hitch harness installed as original equipment, or purchased as an accessory through a Kia dealership. Debris and moisture accumulation on the tow hitch harness module printed circuit board (PCB) may cause an electrical short, which can result in a fire.

Risk: A fire while parked or driving can increase the risk of injury.

Fix: Owners are advised to park outside and away from structures until the recall repair is complete. Dealers will inspect the vehicle, and, as necessary, replace the fuse and/or tow hitch harness module, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed August 11, 2023. Owners may contact Kia customer service at 1-800-333-4542. Kia's number for this recall is SC249.
