Which Rogue is it?
EPA figures for each version of the 2019 Nissan Rogue. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.
| Version | Drive | EPA rating |
|---|---|---|
| 2.0L 4-cylGas | AWD, FWD | 27–28 mpg |
| 2.5L 4-cylGas | AWD, FWD | 27–29 mpg |
| 2.0L 4-cylHybrid | AWD, FWD | 33–34 mpg |
- The 2019 Nissan Rogue was sold in three versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
- On the hybrid, watch for the car moving off on electric power at low speed and for any hybrid system warning on the dash.
- Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Rogue that averages well under the EPA 27 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Why these checks: what owners reported
NHTSA complaints for the 2019 Nissan Rogue, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.
Brakes976 crashes
Automatic emergency braking slams on the brakes with nothing in the way. It happens at everything from parking-lot speeds to highway driving, and sometimes the car comes to a full stop. Many reports begin in the first few thousand miles, some within 1,400 miles. The AEB malfunction light often flashes first. False stops also happen while reversing, under bridges, or over metal grates. A smaller group reports the opposite: the pedal sinks, or AEB fails to engage before a collision. Six of 97 complaints involve a crash. Some owners say the dealer software update did not stop the false braking.
Electrical733 crashes
Door lock actuators fail, so a door will not lock or unlock from the fob or switch. In one report this started near 45,000 miles, and others describe repeat failures of the same part. The center screen and backup camera can go black, the radio resets itself, and the volume jumps on its own. Many filings here also describe false automatic emergency braking and malfunction warnings early in ownership. Other reports cover a no-start with a no-key-detected message and a fuel gauge that stops reading. Three complaints involve crashes, one with an under-hood fire after a collision.
Automatic emergency braking551 crash
The car brakes hard on its own with no vehicle, person, or object ahead. Reports cover 65 mph freeway driving, city streets under 30 mph, parking structures, and backing up in rain. Some events come with no warning. Others bring AEB malfunction messages. Dealers often cannot reproduce the problem. Owners describe recalibrations, sensor or front camera replacements, and a service-bulletin software update, and the braking still comes back afterward. One report links a false stop to loss of control and a rollover. Another says the engine died and the steering briefly locked mid-turn.
Transmission292 crashes
The CVT transmission fails. Symptoms include jerking, hesitation from a stop, a delay before the car moves in Drive, and loss of power on hills or at highway speed. Failures cluster between about 45,000 and 88,000 miles, often with little warning. Dealers quote around $6,000 to $6,500 to replace the transmission. Diagnoses include overheating and metal filings in the fluid. Some owners report the rear differential breaking apart with a bang and smoke. Two crash reports describe the car rolling away unattended after it was left running in Park.
Engine192 crashes
Cooling fans quit, and the motor overheats at idle or in traffic, sometimes with smoke and leaking coolant. Owners report fan failures from 43,819 to 78,000 miles, some more than once. Repair bills run from $554.95 to over $1,200. Other reports describe stalling or losing power in traffic. Sometimes the car restarts on its own, and sometimes it will not restart. In one crash, a stalled car was hit while stopped in a travel lane. A single report describes carbon monoxide found in the cabin.
Acceleration and cruise control152 crashes
The car slows sharply or stops with no traffic ahead. Some cases come from false automatic braking, and others from ProPilot Assist cutting highway speed on its own. One crash report says ProPilot did not stop for a braking car ahead. Other owners report a sudden loss of acceleration, where the car crawls even with the pedal floored. Others report stalling at highway speed in nearly new cars. Camera obstruction warnings appear within hours or days of purchase. A separate crash report says the engine revved and the car surged forward while the brake was pressed.
Steering111 crash
Whining, grinding, squeaking, or popping comes from the front end when the wheel turns, and the wheel can feel stiff. Noise reports start around 25,000 miles, and the stiffness gets worse in cold weather. Dealer fixes such as greasing the boot or ball joint often do not last. More serious reports describe the wheel locking up while the car is moving, or the car veering right without warning. In one case, the car hit parked vehicles. ProPilot lane centering can weave from side to side within the lane.
Airbags75 crashes
Front bags stay folded in frontal and head-on crashes, including crashes severe enough to total the car. Five of the 7 complaints involve a crash. One report describes the opposite problem: passenger-side airbags fired on the highway after a tire went flat, injuring a passenger. In another, the front airbag did not deploy but the seat airbag did, and it injured the driver. A separate complaint describes an SRS warning light that will not go off.
In owners' own words
Excerpts from complaints Rogue owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.
The fuel temperature sensor is faulty. The car is no longer under warranty but is only 31k miles, the fuel temperature sensor can be purchased by itself so the entire fuel pump has to be replaced and they’re very expensive.I know this is a common problem with this temperature sensor. Also the electronic emergency button stopped working about 2 years ago.

2019 Rogue has around 40k miles. Rear brakes wore through to metal backers at approx 30k miles making it necessary to to replace pads and rotors. I am now replacing brakes again. The dealer refused warranty and said rapid wear is normal for these cars, with some wearing out in as little as 10k miles.

Hi. I was driving my Nissan car at around 45 to 50 miles per hour and the car abruptly/suddenly stopped in the middle of the road without any warning. I was about to be hit by other cars behind me but Thank God that didn’t happen. I am very scared of driving this car now. My kids also drive this car and I am extremely worried about their safety. I am hoping Nissan will do something. Extremely worried and scared.

Odometer Fraud. The contact purchased a 2019 Nissan Rogue. The contact stated that while in the process of adding the vehicle to the insurance policy, it was discovered that there was a mileage discrepancy. The vehicle was a private sale. At the time of purchase, the vehicle mileage was 65,298, and while the vehicle was being added to the insurance policy, it was discovered that the mileage on the Carfax report was 217,111.

I was driving and all of a sudden my 2019 Nissan Rogue jerked forward and slowed down in mid traffic. The dashboard lit up with warnings and the vehicle began to idle up over 2 RPM's. Luckily there wasn't much traffic coming, otherwise I would have been in an automobile accident. It really scared me when that happened. I had to pull over and get myself together before pulling back out in traffic to get home.

The Rear Automatic Braking (RAB) indicator came on at the same time as the Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB) with Pedestrian Detection system warning light "Warning", "System Fault" message. The vehicle dynamic control (VDC) light came on at the same time. The air conditioner fan quit blowing. The car became difficult to handle. The "Rear Door Alert is activated" warning message is intermittent.

The transmission or something connected/apart of the transmission. When driving the RMP will accelerate or drop acceleration with cruise control on or with foot on gas pedal. It is currently at the dealership being looked at. The check engine light came on when the vehicle accelerated to 4 RMP's. Last year the vehicle would not accelerate over 35 mph the dealership fixed the issue but never really stated what the issue was or why it happened.

Unknown but it seems like the car is skipping gears, will be running fine then slows to a crawl and if I press on the accelerator harder the car will go wide open and has almost wrecked me across the road in a ditch! It don’t run well the rpm’s jump up and down when I am driving it! I have seen multiple complaints in this same issue! There are accidents reported about this issue why hasn’t it been recalled!

Recalls to confirm (4)
Recall repairs are free at any Nissan dealer, but the seller may never have had them done. Check each campaign number against the VIN.
23V093000ElectricalFeb 2023
Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain 2014-2020 Rogue and 2017-2022 Rogue Sport vehicles equipped with a jackknife style ignition key. The jackknife key may collapse into a folded position while driving.
Risk: Driver contact with a key in the collapsed position could inadvertently shut off the vehicle while driving, increasing the risk of a crash. Additionally, if the vehicle shuts off while driving, the air bags may not deploy in a crash as intended, increasing the risk of injury.
Fix: Dealers will insert a spacer into the key slot of the jackknife key, free of charge. Interim notification letters notifying owners of the safety risk were mailed March 29, 2023. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed August 30, 2023. Owners may contact Nissan's customer service at 1-800-867-7669. Nissan's number for this recall is R22C5.
22V549000BrakesJul 2022
Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain 2017-2019 Rogue Hybrid vehicles. The hydraulic brake booster assembly may overheat internally, resulting in a loss of power brake assist. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 135, "Light Vehicle Brake Systems.".
Risk: A loss of power brake assist can extend the distance required to stop the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.
Fix: Dealers will replace the hydraulic brake booster supply unit, free of charge. Interim Owner notification letters were mailed September 22, 2022. A second letter will be mailed October 31, 2022. Owners may contact Nissan's customer service at 1-800-867-7669. Nissan's number for this recall is R22A6.
21V839000EngineOct 2021
Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain 2017-2019 Rogue Hybrid vehicles. Contact with the Electronic Control Module (ECM) bracket may damage the engine harness, causing a blown fuse.
Risk: A blown fuse may cause an engine stall, increasing the risk of a crash.
Fix: Dealers will install a harness protector cover, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed December 16, 2021. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-867-7669. Nissan's number for this recall is R21B6.

Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain 2018-2019 Nissan Altima, Armada, Frontier, Kicks, Leaf, Maxima, Murano, NV, NV200, Pathfinder, Rogue, Rogue Sport, Sentra, Titan, Titan Diesel, Versa Note and Versa Sedan vehicles, as well as Infiniti Q50, Q60, QX30 and QX80 vehicles. Additionally included are 2019 Nissan GT-R and Taxi and Infiniti QX50, QX60, Q70, Q70L vehicles. The back-up camera and display settings can be adjusted such that the rear view image is no longer visible and the system will retain that setting the next time the vehicle is placed in reverse. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 111, "Rear Visibility.".
