Which Terrain is it?
EPA figures for each version of the 2019 GMC Terrain. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.
| Version | Drive | EPA rating |
|---|---|---|
| 1.5L 4-cylGas | AWD, FWD | 26–28 mpg |
| 2.0L 4-cylGas | AWD, FWD | 23–24 mpg |
| 1.6L 4-cylDiesel | AWD, FWD | 32 mpg |
- The 2019 GMC Terrain was sold in three versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
- Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Terrain that averages well under the EPA 23 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Why these checks: what owners reported
NHTSA complaints for the 2019 GMC Terrain, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.
Transmission46No crashes
The 9-speed transmission slips, misses third gear, sticks in first, or won't engage any gear and strands the car. Some fail within the first few thousand miles, and dealers cite a damaged valve case or planetary gear. Others won't shift into Park and show a shift-to-park message. A second pattern is the brake vacuum pump failing. That leaves a hard brake pedal at highway speed, and the pump's debris can ruin the camshaft or the whole engine. Sudden shutdowns at speed bring near rear-end collisions. Some pumps fail more than once.
Brakes401 crash
The brake pedal suddenly turns rock-hard, often at highway speed, and the car barely slows. A "Service Brake Assist" or reduced engine power warning sometimes comes first, but many drivers get no warning. Shops usually find a failed camshaft-driven vacuum pump, between about 30,000 and 86,000 miles. A pump-only repair runs around $540 to $600. Bills reach nearly $4000 when pump debris damages the engine. One filing reports a crash with 3 injuries. Many owners say no recall covers the 2019 Terrain.
Electrical22No crashes
The backup camera goes to a blue screen with a "Service Rear Vision System" message. One owner paid over $600 to fix it after the warranty ran out. Intermittent electrical faults also appear: service parking brake and reduced steering warnings, flickering headlights, StabiliTrak lights, and an infotainment system that blasts its own volume. Some cars stall and lose all dash power. One fire-flagged report describes a chemical burning smell from the vents that gave occupants headaches. Dealers often cannot reproduce the intermittent faults.
Engine16No crashes
Catastrophic engine failure is the worst pattern. A broken vacuum pump sends debris into the engine, and repairs include timing chains, cam phasers, or a full engine replacement. Two reports involve fire, including a highway shutdown with flames under the hood at 14K miles. New cars lose power under hard acceleration with misfire warnings, and one had a turbo tube blow off at 1000 miles. Other reports describe overheating with oil in the coolant and a transmission that drops into Park while driving.
Backup camera71 crash
The backup camera shows a blank blue screen when shifted into reverse, often with a "Service Rear Vision System" message. Reports cluster between about 50,000 and 88,000 miles. Owners and dealers tie the problem to Technical Service Bulletin 19-NA-076 and call it common on GM vehicles. One driver backed into a telephone pole at 3 mph with the camera out, shattering the rear window. Several owners have not had it repaired.
Steering4No crashes
Pulling away from a stop, the wheel jerks sharply opposite the direction of the turn. Power assist can also cut out mid-turn, with ESC and service parking brake messages appearing intermittently. In one diagnosed case the steering gear was losing voltage and needed replacement at an estimated $2035.63. Other filings describe a hard brake pedal from vacuum pump failure, plus forward automatic braking and lane departure warning that don't work while the dealer finds no codes.
Stability control31 crash
Warning lights for stability control, ABS, and traction control come on together with a flashing check engine light and a stored P0300 misfire code. In one case it kept recurring after a dealer update and ended in a tow. One crash report describes the car lurching forward in stop-and-go traffic while the brake pedal failed to respond, hitting the vehicle ahead. Another describes the navigation and infotainment screen shutting off with an SD card error. With only 3 complaints, there is no clear pattern.
Airbags22 crashes
Both complaints involve crashes with injuries, and they describe opposite failures. In one side impact the air bags deployed, but metal fragments struck the driver's face and caused severe injuries. In the other, the driver-side air bags did not deploy when the vehicle was hit on that side. Two reports are too few to show a pattern, but each describes a serious occupant-protection failure.
In owners' own words
Excerpts from complaints Terrain owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.
The GMC Terrain P187E transmission code indicates a problem with the transmission senor or shift interlock. It prevented our car from shifting into park. The car won't start now. We had to disconnect the battery because the car would not stop beeping. Milage is only 22000 miles and we have owned it for less then 2 months. It is a 9 speed transmission which I understand this to be an on going issue with this transmission.

I was driving through a four way intersection with my children and the breaks locked up and I couldn’t get to a stop. This was the middle of September: There are MULTIPLE complaints on this happening with my model and someone is going to die if it’s not recalled. This is a serious safety concern. There was NO warning, or light to prepare me for the problem. Please do something to help us.

Faulty vaccuum pump blew leading to engine failure. On the highway randomly, with my child in the vehicle. This almost caused a huge accident. I’ve kept up on all maintence and oil changes. This has been a huge effect on my life as I’m a single parent and randomly had to spend thousands on a new engine for zero fault of my own. I’ve read many many people having this issue. Something needs to be done and action needs to be taken!!!!!!!!

I was driving this morning and my car put itself in neutral. I think had to pull off to the side because it was not accelerating. I could get it to go over 20 mph. Every time I tired to accelerate. The engine would feel forced.

Where the 2019 fits in the Terrain's history
Redesigns and mid-cycle updates change what can go wrong.
The 2019 is the second model year of the Terrain's second generation (2018–2024).
GMC updated the Terrain for 2022, so a 2019 does not have those changes.
What changed for 2022 (not on a 2019)
- Updated front and rear end
- Exterior LED lamps
- New trim levels including AT4
- Discontinuation of low-end SL trim

Fix: GM will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the start-stop transmission accumulator and replace it if any bolts are missing, free of charge. The recall began December 15, 2020. Owners may contact GMC customer service at 1-888-988-7267, Buick Customer service at 1-866-608-8080, Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020 or Cadillac customer service at 1-800-458-8006.
