Which Accord is it?
EPA figures for each version of the 2021 Honda Accord. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.
| Version | Drive | EPA rating |
|---|---|---|
| 1.5L 4-cylGas | FWD | 33 mpg |
| 2.0L 4-cylGas | FWD | 26 mpg |
| 2.0L 4-cylHybrid | FWD | 48 mpg |
- The 2021 Honda Accord was sold in three versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
- On the hybrid, watch for the car moving off on electric power at low speed and for any hybrid system warning on the dash.
- Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Accord that averages well under the EPA 26 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Why these checks: what owners reported
NHTSA complaints for the 2021 Honda Accord, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.
Automatic emergency braking393 crashes
Hard automatic braking with nothing ahead is the dominant complaint. It strikes at 45 to 75 mph, often under adaptive cruise when a lead car exits or turns, or when traffic sits only in adjacent lanes. A brake warning flashes, and pressing the accelerator often fails to override it. Three reports describe rear-end crashes, two with injuries, and some cars were totaled. Dealers often cannot reproduce the fault or call it normal behavior. One software update did not cure it.
Electrical371 crash
Infotainment phantom touches lead this category. The screen changes menus, cancels navigation, raises volume and places calls on its own, mostly in warm weather. Resets, software updates and even a replaced audio unit often fail to stop it. Other reports describe sudden clusters of brake, parking brake and driver-assist warnings, rear wheels locking from the electric parking brake, door lock actuators failing at about 30,000 miles, and no-start messages. One parked car filled with smoke, which the fire department traced to exposed wiring.
Brakes203 crashes
False automatic braking also shows up here, including at intersections when a turning car clears the lane. Three of these reports involve rear-end crashes, one with a semi. A separate pattern is grinding or squealing from the rear brakes while backing up. It often starts when the car is new, and dealers say they cannot reproduce it. Some cars show stacked warnings for the brake system, brake hold and electric parking brake. One dealer fixed this with a brake sensor.
Airbags181 crash
Most of these reports concern a recall repair owners cannot get. Owners notified under recall 24V064000, tied to a passenger seat weight sensor, say parts are unavailable. Some dealers quote waits of 4-5 years. Others say they will only repair cars whose airbag light is on. Few owners report an actual failure. One describes a diagnostic scan finding a faulty restraint system at 38,000 miles with no warning light shown.
Engine151 crash
Head gasket failure is the central problem on the 1.5 turbo, 2.0 turbo and hybrid. Symptoms include coolant loss, white smoke, cylinder misfires, a flashing check engine light and a sudden loss of power at highway speed with many dash warnings. Failures cluster from about 50k to 100,000 miles. Dealers often find no stored codes at first. Other reports cite a stretched timing chain on the 1.5T at 86000 miles and repeat fuel pump replacements. One crash involved sudden acceleration while in Park.
Lane keeping10No crashes
Lane keeping assist jerks the steering wheel hard and can pull the car toward another lane. This happens mostly when driving into direct sunlight. Some owners leave the feature switched off. In cold weather, the whole driver-assist suite can shut down with a string of warnings lasting 5-60 minutes. Other reports describe hard braking triggered by crack sealer mistaken for lane lines, wildly wrong speed limit readings, and blind spot alerts with no vehicle present.
Steering83 crashes
Sudden, violent steering pulls are the serious pattern here. Three crash reports involve the wheel jerking or steering and brakes failing at speed, and one rollover injured two people. Several owners link the jerking to false lane-keeping alerts. Less severe reports include an Electric Power Steering Problem message at low speed that clears after a restart, steering that briefly seizes, loose steering on the highway, and a rubbing noise when turning in parking lots.
Transmission81 crash
Head gasket failure again drives most reports. The car can shut down without warning, every dash light comes on, and power drops at highway speed. One such failure led to a crash with two injuries. Another pattern is power loss with a flashing engine light during heavy rain. Normal operation returns after the car sits off for a while. Isolated reports describe steering shake under braking at 60 to 65 mph and a car that would not move after a loud thud.
In owners' own words
Excerpts from complaints Accord owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.
Automatic emergency breaking system has benn activated in about 6 different ocassions while driving in the highway for no reason. No vehicles or obstacles in front of the car but car suddenly applied brakes stopping the car very suddenly while driving 70-75 miles per hour.

1.Driving on a straight road at about 45-50 MPH sudden abrupt braking for no reason . 2. Good thing I was wearing a seat belt , it was a very forceful brake action that pushed me forcefully forward, I was struck from behind by another vehicle. Visial minor damage to the rear bumper cover. 3. No it happened today 4-5-23 I plan on calling the dealer tomorrow. 4. The BRAKE message appeared at the exact time of the incident.

Blend door actuator is making a loud clicking noise which indicates the blend door actuator is either broken or going out. This problem will cause the heat and air to not function correctly. This seems to be an issue on several makes and models of Hondas 2019-2021(possibly other years). My Honda has 46,000 miles on and always had scheduled maintenance completed.

I turned my car on and it didn't want to crank up. Once it did crank up every warning light came on. My son ran the code and P00087 came up. I tried to drive my car in my parking lot and it kept stalling like it was going to cut off. Now I drove my car earlier in the day and didn't have any problems. It wasn't until after my car sat throughout the day when this took place. I know it's a recall for fuel pump issues but my car isn't included.

I was driving northbound in on I15 in Salt Lake City when a Home Depot Bucket blew into my lane. I slowed down to change lanes when the Collision Mitigation Braking System (CMBS) deployed without warning, bringing my car to an almost stop causing a semi tractor trailer to hit me from behind.
Filed with NHTSA, October 2025
Brake noise from rear whenever backing out. After several visits to Space Coast Honda was assured it is nothing. Because it is getting worse and braking involved, I am concerned. This began with purchase of vehicle and continues today. Wrote letter to American Honda Motor Co in July of 2023 but never received a response.
Filed with NHTSA, September 2024
Upon pulling into a parking space, with the steering wheel almost at full lock to the right, when I braked, the car suddenly accelerated out of control and hit another car. Airbags did not deploy but there was damage to both vehicles, no injuries. Vehicle has been taken to a collision repair shop to await repair. It is available for inspection. Has not been looked at to date.
