Which Accord is it?
EPA figures for each version of the 2022 Honda Accord. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.
| Version | Drive | EPA rating |
|---|---|---|
| 1.5L 4-cylGas | FWD | 33 mpg |
| 2.0L 4-cylGas | FWD | 26 mpg |
| 2.0L 4-cylHybrid | FWD | 47 mpg |
- The 2022 Honda Accord was sold in three versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
- On the hybrid, watch for the car moving off on electric power at low speed and for any hybrid system warning on the dash.
- Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Accord that averages well under the EPA 26 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.
Why these checks: what owners reported
NHTSA complaints for the 2022 Honda Accord, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.
Electrical531 crash
The touchscreen registers ghost touches. It switches audio sources, exits navigation, opens menus, places phone calls, and ignores real input while driving. Dealer screen replacements often fail to fix it, and dealers say Honda has no fix. A frozen screen also blocks tasks routed through it, such as tire pressure sensor calibration. A second pattern involves misfires, a flood of dashboard warnings, and limp mode that drops the car to 20 mph, sometimes on the interstate. One crash with 2 injuries followed a stutter while the car pulled into an intersection.
Automatic emergency braking382 crashes
Automatic emergency braking clamps down hard with nothing ahead. Reports cover speeds from 30 mph up to highway speed, usually with only a brake warning or BRAKING message at the moment it happens. Lane changes, merges, rain, and snow come up often. Two complaints describe rear-end crashes after the car stopped on its own, and many more describe near misses. Dealers usually find no stored codes and offer no fix. Switching the system off does not last, because it turns back on at restart. Some cars also show intermittent radar obstructed errors that disable adaptive cruise.
Engine14No crashes
Head gasket failures and cracked cylinder heads make up most of these complaints. Symptoms include a sudden engine temperature warning, coolant leaking near the exhaust manifold, white smoke, misfires, and loss of power while driving, often with no earlier warning. One hybrid failed at about 93,500 miles, with a repair quote over $4,000. Other reports cover cylinder 1 misfires, stalling at highway speed with several warning lights on, and a VTC replacement. Overheating or losing power in fast traffic creates real crash risk.
Brakes133 crashes
Brakes fail to respond in the most serious reports, which include crashes into a wall and through a busy intersection, with one injury. A related pattern shows the brake system light alongside a long list of driver-assist warnings, sometimes leaving the car unable to start. Dealers often reset the codes and find nothing. A milder but common issue is loud squealing or grinding from the rear brakes in reverse, worse in humid, wet, or cold weather, starting within the first year. False automatic braking at highway speed also shows up here.
Steering10No crashes
The wheel turns sticky or stiff, needs extra force to correct, or fails to return to center in one direction. Some cars click when turning at low speed or at a stop. Dealers often cannot duplicate it at first, then blame the steering rack or a failed electric power steering module with no repair available. One module failure came at 24,686 miles, and sticky steering tends to worsen over time. Other complaints cover steering and brake warnings that light up together while speed is limited, rusty rear control arm bushings, and shuffling on concrete highways.
Acceleration and cruise control91 crash
Reports split between unintended acceleration and sudden loss of power. Some describe the car speeding up on its own, including running past the cruise control set speed on the interstate and surging in a parking area before a crash. Others describe a blinking check engine light, a misfire code, and limp mode that cuts highway speed to 20 mph. Dealers often cannot reproduce either problem. The rest cover aggressive false automatic braking and clusters of traction control and system warnings, especially on cold starts.
Lane keeping6No crashes
Lane keeping assist steers when the car is already centered, and in some cases it jerks the wheel toward the road edge. Several complaints pair this with sudden automatic braking lasting 1 to 2 seconds during lane changes, off-ramps, and open highway driving with nothing nearby. Problems start early, within the first weeks or months of ownership. Dealers test the system and find nothing wrong. No crashes are reported, but unexpected steering and braking inputs at highway speed carry clear loss-of-control risk.
Wheels and tires5No crashes
Tire pressure problems keep coming back, with slow leaks, repeated service visits, and in one case a flat with no sensor warning. Other reports describe sudden failures: tread separation at highway speed on a factory Michelin tire around 1,200 miles, and a tire cut all the way around near the rim. These failures happen early in ownership. Tread separation at speed carries crash risk. Some complaints are about tire shop work rather than the car itself.

infotainment system ghost touches the screen and changes from navigation to radio to xm to screen savor to Bluetooth, very dangerous as navigation is not reliable for turn my turn directions and this is extremely distracting honda says no fix consumer problem. warrent ran out 6/25 and car has 35,000 miles

Car is only 5 months old and 1500 miles. All lights on dashboard are on. Check engine, check brake, check emissions, check collision mitigation, check ABS - literally all lights are on.

purchased vehicle on 11/22/23the next day the car slammed on the brakes to an almost complete stop while merging right onto a freeway onramp. it was a clear early morning with no cars in front or near. had there been someone close behind me they would have rear ended me. now since then today 12/3/23 back to back the same day within an hour the car slammed on the brakes when a vehicle turned right, without being close. i feel the vehicle is unsafe

My car has been phantom braking very hard on its own many times this past week while I was driving on the freeway. There’s no car in front of me and luckily no car was in back of me. Also I noticed it happens a lot when I change lane. I noted these frequent frightful occurrences below. It just brakes when nothing is in front. 6/14/24 @11:30am on the freeway 6/19/24 @9:17am on the freeway 6/22 /24 @8:37am phantom brake very hard on the freeway

This is very serious while driving on the highway vehicle warning for engine temperature right after check engine came on. I almos crashed becuase the engine temperature close to limit asked to reduce the acceleration but how can I slow down in 2 lines fast highway on very dark night. This very, very unsafely and Honda should take this seriously if they claim safety is priority.

Car started overheating randomly while driving and pulled over to see why. Opened the hood to white smoke everywhere and an active leak of coolant by the exhaust manifold. Took it to a mechanic and was told the cylinder head itself has porosity and/or a hairline crack. Pressure tested as well and can visibly see the leak coming from the cylinder head itself.

Collision warning randomly activates when driving while no vehicles or objects are around. This has been ongoing, but this last time emergency braking activated extremely hard and would had caused a collision if there was a vehicle following as vehicle almost came to a complete stop on a 75 mph highway.

Rear brakes make squealing noise when vehicle is placed in reverse while in motion. This issue has been happening within the first year I had the vehicle from new. Took the vehicle in for inspection with no reported issues. Noise still persists. Other Honda Accord owners have reported similar issues.
