Which Malibu is it?

EPA figures for each version of the 2021 Chevrolet Malibu. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.

VersionDriveEPA rating
1.5L 4-cylFWD32 mpg
2.0L 4-cylFWD26 mpg
  • The 2021 Chevrolet Malibu was sold in two versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
  • Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Malibu that averages well under the EPA 26 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Check the odometer against these mileages

Owners report these failures starting around the mileages below. A car inside one of these ranges deserves a closer look at that part, or records showing it was already fixed.

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2021 Chevrolet Malibu, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Transmission22No crashes

Most of these reports describe a false "Shift to Park" warning. The shifter sits in Park, but the dash says it does not, and the car may not shut off, lock, or power down. Drivers wiggle the shifter or restart the car several times to clear the message. Reported mileages range from about 15,000 to 98,600. Dealers have traced the fault to a failed shift lever, and owners past warranty pay for the repair. A smaller group reports jerking, failure to accelerate, harsh downshifts that slam into gear, grinding, and stalling in traffic.

  • Electrical15No crashes

The false "Shift to Park" message leads this category too. Power stays on after shutdown, which drains the battery and has left drivers stranded. One report describes the car trying to roll while the warning was showing. Dealers replace the shifter assembly, and one out-of-warranty repair cost $500.15. A harness replacement on another car held for only about a week. Several owners say the related recall covers only certain VINs. More serious reports describe stalling while driving, a sudden shift to neutral, a "Service ESC" warning with reduced engine power, and steering lockup. Dealers often cannot reproduce the stalls or find codes.

  • Body and structure2No crashes

Two unrelated problems show up here. A windshield cracked nearly a foot, starting from a small chip, while the car was driven through a sandstorm at 5,360 miles. Separately, the upper center brake light leaked, and moisture and mildew built up inside. With only 2 complaints and no shared cause, this category shows no pattern.

  • Steering2No crashes

Power steering can cut out when the car stalls. One report at 68,000 miles describes the car losing motive power while moving, with grinding, warning lights, and no power steering. A mechanic could not find the cause, and the failure kept happening. The other complaint is the familiar "Shift to Park" alert that makes the car hard to shut off. Both problems match the stalling and shifter faults reported in other categories.

In owners' own words

Excerpts from complaints Malibu owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.

Transmission
Had the car for less than a year and it started jerking badly on the highway almost caused an accident. Took it to the Chevy dealer and was told I need a new transmission on a 2021 vehicle because of a STRETCHED DRIVE CHAIN CAUSING WEAK DRIVE AND CAUSED METAL DEBRIS TO GET SENT THROUGH THE TRANSMISSION SETTING DTC'S .

Transmission
Every time I shift my car into park and try to power it off I get a warning saying shift car to park when already in park. Now I’m afraid that one day the car will display the shift gear improperly and the car will start to move on it own causing the safety anyone around it.

Filed with NHTSA, March 2024

Electrical
My car has about 82000 miles and while driving it stated that I was shifted to neutral and needed to be restarted. After a few seconds the steering wheel locks up and I can’t press the gas anymore, even though the car is still in drive. This happened about 6 times on the half mile drive home. I haven’t been able to diagnose it yet since the dealership is backed up for a month. I think it’s the neutral safety switch

Electrical
After shifting into park and turning vehicle off -warning beep "place vehicle into park" comes on. It takes several "jerks" of gear shift to turn off. I'm scared its not in park and may roll.

Where the 2021 fits in the Malibu's history

Redesigns and mid-cycle updates change what can go wrong.

The 2021 is the sixth model year of the Malibu's ninth generation (2016 on).

Chevrolet updated the Malibu for 2024, so a 2021 does not have those changes.

What changed for 2024 (not on a 2021)

  • Final year of production in the US.
  • End of sales in the US.
  • No immediate successor announced.
