Which K5 is it?

EPA figures for each version of the 2021 Kia K5. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.

VersionDriveEPA rating
1.6L 4-cylAWD, FWD29–32 mpg
2.5L 4-cylFWD27 mpg
  • The 2021 Kia K5 was sold in two versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
  • Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A K5 that averages well under the EPA 27 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Check the odometer against these mileages

Owners report these failures starting around the mileages below. A car inside one of these ranges deserves a closer look at that part, or records showing it was already fixed.

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2021 Kia K5, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Electrical34No crashes

The HVAC blower circuit fails most often. Fuses and wiring at the fuse box melt, leaving no heat or air conditioning, and some owners press on the fuse box to bring power back. A warranty extension relocates the blower fuse, yet some cars burn relays again afterward, and dealers then quote a full wiring harness at the owner's cost. Two reports involve fire, including an engine-bay fire that totaled a car. Other complaints describe stalling and total power loss on freeways, failed starters, and erratic power seats.

  • Fuel system19No crashes

Fuel tank expansion dominates these reports. Pressure builds in the tank, often linked to the purge control valve, until a loud bang pushes the rear seat up. Gasoline odor fills the cabin, fuel sprays from the filler, the gauge drops, and the engine loses power on the highway. Several cars were declared totaled with bent frames. Dealers run a software update or recall inspection, but some tell owners there is no remedy for the tank itself. Other reports cover lingering cabin fuel odor, pumps that fail to shut off at fill-up, and misfires.

The fuel tank expands while the car is moving. A loud explosion from the rear lifts the back seat, fuel leaks or squirts from the filler neck, and the gauge swings between full and empty. One report involves an injured back-seat passenger, and another occurred around 116,000 miles. Dealers sometimes find no cause, and one recall repair under 25V794000 stalled because parts were unavailable. Fuel odor in the cabin and a range display that drops far faster than the car is driven are also reported.

  • Transmission13No crashes

Sudden loss of drive power is the main pattern. The transmission fails without warning and the car coasts to a stop on the highway. Some units are replaced, one car twice before 16,600 miles. Other owners describe slipping, delayed or rough shifts, grinding between gears, and an engine that stays revved after they lift off the gas. One new car needed a transmission within 5 days because of a fluid leak. A few complaints filed here actually concern fuel tank recall delays, a failed brake vacuum pump, and coolant odor.

  • Engine9No crashes

Power loss and major internal damage tend to show up at higher mileage. Reports include turbo-related power loss, coolant passing through the turbo into the head gasket, a failed thermostat with overheating, and a ruined motor after the oil drain plug fell out. Second owners learn the 10-year, 100,000-mile powertrain warranty does not transfer. Some cars shut off repeatedly on the highway and drop into limp mode. Other complaints describe strong coolant vapor escaping near the reservoir cap and a car that powers on its dash but will not start.

  • Body and structure9No crashes

Fuel tank swelling deforms the rear floor and frame, sometimes badly enough that repairs cost more than the car is worth. Service campaign SC288 addresses the tank pressure problem. The other recurring issue is engine and underbody covers that break loose and drag or flap at speed, in one case damaging the fender and fog light housing. Owners also report a low front bumper that scrapes and pops off, a sunroof that shattered while driving, lifting trim under the rear window, and wind noise from the rear doors.

  • Airbags85 crashes

Airbags fail to deploy in serious crashes. Reports describe frontal impacts at 30 to 35 mph, a rear-end collision near 50 mph, and a deer strike at 65 to 70 mph, all with no deployment. Five reports involve crashes, five injuries are recorded, and one driver later died from her injuries. A rear seatback also unlatched in one frontal crash. Recall 23V149000 covers the airbags, though at least one owner waited on parts that were unavailable. Some complaints here instead concern fuel tank expansion under SC288.

  • Steering7No crashes

Power steering cuts out without warning. The wheel stiffens or locks, a long list of driver-assist warning lights appears, and restarting the car sometimes clears it. Dealers often cannot find a cause, and one case began around 16,000 miles. Some cars lock the wheel right at startup, and in one case it later happened on the highway. A separate pattern is a hard pull to the right that alignments and new tires do not fix. Warped brake rotors that shake the wheel under braking also come up repeatedly.

  • Lane keeping21 crash

Driver-assist features work intermittently, switching on and off without explanation. In one crash, the steering wheel shuddered and went rigid during a slow turn. The driver lost control and hit a dumpster, and the airbags did not deploy. The dealer said the car could not be repaired under a federal recall campaign. Only 2 complaints are filed here, but the steering behavior matches the power steering failures reported under steering, so the two problems are worth checking together.

Electrical
nspected blower fuse 40A at E/R Junction block and found multi fuse & E/R Junction block melting Need replacement multi fuse and wiring repair at E/R Junction block Service adviser recommends performing repair which is a known issue for Kia, because the electrical short could create a fire The AC stopped working, got it repaired and within a month it failed again, took it to dealership and they said it was a known issue, but not a safety recall.

Electrical
The blower motor goes out intermittently. I replaced the blower motor but found the problem to be much greater. Upon further inspection the fuse for the blower and wiring harness are melting into eachother at the fuse box. This issue is becoming more and more prevalent in model from the year 2021-2024 the remedy is a complete wiring harness and fuse box replacement.

Fuel system
I brought my car in for the recall regarding the faulty check valve in the fuel tank. My check engine light had also just come on. I have a 2021 Kia K5 with 60,000 miles and the dealership tells me I have to replace all 4 fuel injectors since it's causing a "system too lean" message.

Fuel system
I was driving when I heard a loud bang and my 11month old son who was in the back seat woke up then started smelling gas and I looked out my mirror and gas was spewing out of my closed gas cap when I pulled over and looked my back seat was off its mounts and what I assume is the fuel pump was popped out of place as well I have taken it to my Kia dealer and they said it has been escalated to corporate I am still waiting for an update

Where the 2021 fits in the K5's history

Redesigns and mid-cycle updates change what can go wrong.

The 2021 is the first model year of the K5's fifth generation (2021–2023). First years of a redesign often carry teething problems that Kia fixes in later years, so the checks above matter more than usual.

Kia updated the K5 for 2025, so a 2021 does not have those changes.

What changed for 2025 (not on a 2021)

  • Redesigned headlights and taillights
  • Updated interior with new technology

Should you avoid the first year of a redesign? See the 45-car study.

Recalls to confirm (6)

Recall repairs are free at any Kia dealer, but the seller may never have had them done. Check each campaign number against the VIN.

  1. 25V794000Fuel systemNov 2025

Kia America, Inc. (Kia) is recalling certain 2021-2024 K5 vehicles. A damaged check valve can allow air to enter the fuel tank, causing it to expand and contact hot exhaust components, melting the tank.

Risk: A melted fuel tank can leak, increasing the risk of a fire.

Fix: Dealers will replace the check valve. The fuel tank will be inspected for damage and replaced as necessary. All repairs will be performed free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed January 16, 2026. Owners may contact Kia customer service at 800-333-4542. Kia's number for this recall is SC356. Kia Motor America (Kia) is recalling certain 2021 Sorento and 2021-2022 K5 vehicles equipped with 2.5L turbocharged engines. Fuel may leak at the pipe connection between the high-pressure fuel pump and fuel rail.

Risk: A fuel leak increases the risk of a fire.

Fix: Dealers will inspect and tighten, or replace the fuel pipe as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed July 21, 2021. Owners may contact Kia customer service at 1-800-333-4542. Kia's number for this recall is SC214.

  5. 21V447000Lane keepingJun 2021

Kia Motors America (Kia) is recalling certain 2021-2022 K5 vehicles equipped with 2.5L T-GDI engines. The Rack-Mounted Motor Driven Power Steering (R-MDPS) system lacks the ability to diagnose communication faults. If a communication fault occurs while driving around a curve with Lane Following Assist (LFA) engaged, the steering assist level may not adjust properly, causing a sudden increase in the steering effort required.

Risk: A sudden increase in steering effort can increase the risk of a crash.

Fix: Dealers will update the R-MDPS software, free of charge. Owner notification letters are were mailed June 24, 2021. Owner may contact Kia customer service at 1-800-333-4542. Kia's number for this recall is SC213.

  6. 21V164000AirbagsMar 2021
