Which Altima is it?

EPA figures for each version of the 2021 Nissan Altima. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.

VersionDriveEPA rating
2.0L 4-cylFWD29 mpg
2.5L 4-cylAWD, FWD29–32 mpg
  • The 2021 Nissan Altima was sold in two versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
  • Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Altima that averages well under the EPA 29 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2021 Nissan Altima, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Electrical14No crashes

Door lock actuators fail, often on two or three doors in a row. Affected doors stop locking or unlocking by fob or button, and some will not open even by hand. Several owners say the doors no longer lock automatically while driving, and dealers sometimes cannot reproduce the fault. Other reports describe false rear crash and washer fluid warnings and a backup camera that darkens, freezes, or goes black. Some describe an A/V control unit failure that blasts the radio at full volume with no way to turn it down. A few report unwanted automatic braking.

  • Brakes122 crashes

Most of these reports describe the car braking on its own. It brakes hard under overpasses, near railway crossings, in rain, and while backing up with nothing behind it, and sometimes the rear fishtails. AEB and stability warning lights or a "malfunction: see owner's manual" message often come first. Both reported crashes describe the opposite problem: the car did not stop when the driver pressed the brake, and one showed a "Chassis Control System Error" message. Dealers often cannot reproduce the fault. One separate report blames a failing rear caliper.

  • Steering51 crash

The main concerns are lost steering control and a loose front end. The one crash, which caused an injury, came right after a malfunction warning. The wheel then stopped responding and the car went over a curb. Other reports describe a detached tie rod ball joint, popping noises from the front end, and steering that feels too loose in sharp turns. Several owners link these symptoms to a ball joint recall but say their VIN shows no open recall. The one fire-flagged report is about wildfire heat and ash damage, not a vehicle fault.

  • Automatic emergency braking5No crashes

The automatic emergency braking system brakes hard with nothing ahead. Owners report it at 60 to 70 mph, in steady traffic, leaving parking garages, and in reverse. One owner traces the false alarms to the forward radar behind the grille, which road dirt or weather can block, and turns AEB off on every drive. Another says a replaced front radar failed again within two months, on a car just past 10,000 miles. Owners say the problem started soon after purchase and kept coming back after dealer visits, and they fear being rear-ended.

  • Engine3No crashes

Only three engine complaints are on file, and each describes a different problem. One owner reports abnormal engine noises and a metal fragment found in an oil sample at about 51,000 miles. Another reports a car that loses all power while parked and will not start, even after a new battery. A parts store later found a faulty alternator. The third complaint is filed here but describes the transmission jerking since purchase, with no fix so far.

  • Wipers and visibility2No crashes

Both complaints involve windshields cracked by road debris, and neither describes a defect in the glass itself. The real problem is the repair. One shop could not remove the windshield, and a dealer said the bolts could not come out without breaking the wiper motor. One crack happened at about 41,000 miles after a rock strike.

  • Transmission2No crashes

The car loses power while driving, once at 50 mph on a busy road. The owner blames the CVT, even though the fluid level is correct. A separate report describes a leaking transmission front seal at under 51,000 miles. Only two complaints are filed here, but a report in the engine category of the transmission jerking since purchase points the same way.

Brakes
On two separate occasions, during intermittent weather changes, my vehicle has giving me notice of forward warning collision being disabled or has flashed on my dashboard. Same goes with my rear collision warnings. My car has also force-brake while driving under 30 mph. I don't know if there is a safety issue with the alignment of the radars in the newer models but its caused a fear of driving my family in that car.

Steering
First of all I know there is a break in period. The stering seems to be loose at times almost to loose when I’m turning , especially a more sharper turn. The brakes are loud at a stop almost like they are warped but it only has 300 miles.the suspension, brakes,,underneath the front end, and the steering do not feel like they are one unit.

Filed with NHTSA, November 2021

Steering
My car has a detached tie rod ball joint and is causing a loss of steering control, and increasing the risk of a crash. My children are in danger yet your site says my vin has no safety recall after I reviewed the safety recall for my vehicle and noticed a connection. I can’t afford any repairs and I shouldn’t have to risk my life over a recalled problem with my make model and year vehicle.

Where the 2021 fits in the Altima's history

Redesigns and mid-cycle updates change what can go wrong.

The 2021 is the third model year of the Altima's sixth generation (2019–2023).

Nissan updated the Altima for 2023, so a 2021 does not have those changes.

What changed for 2023 (not on a 2021)

  • Redesigned front fascia with new LED headlights
  • New user interface for standard 12.3-inch touchscreen

Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain 2019-2021 Altima and 2020-2021 Sentra vehicles.
