These checks are specific to this model year. For tires, body panels, fluids, and the other basics every used car needs, use the general inspection guide.

Which Escape is it?

EPA figures for each version of the 2020 Ford Escape. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.

VersionDriveEPA rating
1.5L 3-cylGasAWD, FWD28–30 mpg
2.0L 4-cylGasAWD26 mpg
2.5L 4-cylHybridFWD, 4WD40–41 mpg
2.5L 4-cylPlug-in hybridFWD530 mi range
  • The 2020 Ford Escape was sold in four versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
  • On the hybrid, watch for the car moving off on electric power at low speed and for any hybrid system warning on the dash.
  • Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Escape that averages well under the EPA 26 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2020 Ford Escape, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Body and structure655No crashes

Spot welds at the driver's door check arm break loose, usually after a popping or creaking sound inside the door. The door then becomes hard to open or close, may not latch, and the window often sticks partway or stops working. Many reports fall between about 17,000 and 37,000 miles, often just outside warranty, and some owners are quoted a full door replacement. A second pattern involves the power liftgate closing on its own while people load cargo, striking heads and causing several of the 6 reported injuries.

  • Transmission2204 crashes

Transmissions slip, refuse to engage drive or reverse, or fail outright, sometimes leaving the car stranded in traffic. Several total failures fall around 70,000 to 80,000 miles, and one owner reports a $9,000 replacement. In some cases the car shifts the wrong way or rolls after being parked, leading to 4 crashes, including a serious foot injury. AWD module and rear differential failures bring a cluster of warnings and disable drive modes. Peeling chrome on the shifter knob also leaves sharp edges that cut hands.

  • Electrical130No crashes

A cluster of warnings appears at startup: AWD fault, hill start assist unavailable, pre-collision assist unavailable, and AdvanceTrac service. Dealers typically replace the AWD module, often for several hundred dollars or more, with failures reported from about 20,000 to 74,000 miles. Hybrid owners describe a different problem: the 12V battery drains into deep sleep mode, the car goes completely dead, or a Stop Safely Now message appears and the car shuts off while driving. Screens can go black with a network communication error. One hybrid caught fire under the hood.

  • Fuel system95No crashes

Most filings here are not about breakdowns. Owners report receiving a recall notice and then waiting months because the repair parts are not available, and dealers confirm the shortage. Most say they have had no failure so far. A smaller group describes a gasoline smell inside the cabin or smoke coming through the vents and from under the hood. In one case a dealer found a fuel injector needed replacing but could not get the part.

  • Engine86No crashes

Serious engine failures include coolant leaking into the engine and destroying the head gasket, and a highway breakdown with whining, a loud crash, white exhaust smoke, and lost acceleration, at about 50,000 to 78,000 miles. Other reports describe bucking, power loss, and a flashing check engine light at highway speed. Hybrids show a Stop Safely Now warning and then shut off. Many excerpts are owners waiting on an engine recall repair with no parts available, which some say hurts resale value.

  • Door latches and locks30No crashes

Driver's doors stop latching, fail to stay shut, or open while the car is moving. The failure often starts with popping, clicking, or screeching when the door is opened. The driver's window usually stops working at the same time, and some doors will not open all the way. Dealers diagnose fractured latches or hinges and often call for a new door, but many cars go unrepaired. Reported mileages range widely, from about 25,000 to 100,599 miles.

  • Brakes261 crash

Rear brakes squeal or howl when pressed in reverse, often around 30,000 miles. Dealer fixes frequently fail to last, and some parts are on backorder. More serious reports describe a stiff, hard, or spongy pedal along with ABS, hill start, and pre-collision warnings, making the car very hard to stop. One case traced the problem to the power brake booster. A few owners report the car not stopping or accelerating with the brake pressed, including a parking lot crash that the dealer could not reproduce.

  • Steering203 crashes

Power steering cuts out or the wheel seizes, making the car hard to control. Diagnoses include a failed electronic power steering control module and a faulty steering column. Several of the 3 crashes involve sudden loss of steering, and one involves the car swerving into the next lane with lane assist active. Some drivers say the wheel jerks toward turn lanes. Many reports in this section actually describe AWD module failures that disable AWD and collision assist, often under about 30,000 miles.

In owners' own words

Excerpts from complaints Escape owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.

Body and structure
Every time the driver side opens, I hear a popping sound. I took it to my local Ford dealership and apparently it was passed warranty just two days prior so no work has been done. They advised me that the welds failed on the door and now the car needs a new door and latch that will take at least a week to complete repairs. My car has only 32,000 miles so it's fairly new. I fear that the door will eventually give out on me and not close properly.

Body and structure
I own a 2020 Ford Escape. While entering the vehicle through the driver's side door, the door made an abnormal popping sound while being opened. The passenger’s side front door also made the abnormal popping sound while being opened. I have been informed by my repair shop that the doors will need to be replaced. I took to my local dealership, Kindle Ford and they informed me that the vehicle is out of warranty as the mileage is at 40,000 miles.

Filed with NHTSA, January 2024

Transmission
We have a 2020 Ford Escape that has less than 90,000 miles and while driving we began having some jarring and spuddering when trying to accelerate. The car seems to have issues gearing up. We have identified the issue by a mechanic as transmission and through research have found this is a known issue by Ford and they are under lawsuits. We are now looking at a 6-$10,000 repair on a car 4 years old. According to Ford no intentions to correct the issue.

Filed with NHTSA, October 2024

Transmission
In three occasions the automatic transmission has stopped working, operating under normal city driving conditions. Turning the car off and on again, it has worked properly. The car has less than 4000 miles. I took it to the Ford repair shop and there is a defect in the hybrid transmission, and it will take 4-6 weeks to be solved. Unbelievable such problems in a vehicle with such a few number of miles. Where is the quality control...

Filed with NHTSA, August 2021

Electrical
The car continually has delayed acceleration. It revs and drives 2.5 mph for several seconds before it lurches into gear. It's extremely unsafe and I'm concerned about it happening on the highway. Ford is refusing to take an appointment with me to assess the safety of the vehicle until 2-3 months out (won't even put my name on a waitlist) and will not offer a loaner vehicle in the interim. The car has 15,000 miles on it and is under warranty.

Filed with NHTSA, June 2022

Electrical
AWD fault at 58,000 miles. AWD module has to be replaced at approximately $750. Power train/drivetrain warranty good for 60,000 miles. Was informed at the dealership that it wasn’t covered under the power train/drivetrain warranty. I have read several complaints from owners having the same issue. Ford needs to offer a recall and reimburse all funds.

Where the 2020 fits in the Escape's history

Redesigns and mid-cycle updates change what can go wrong.

The 2020 is the first model year of the Escape's fourth generation (2020 on). First years of a redesign often carry teething problems that Ford fixes in later years, so the checks above matter more than usual.

Ford updated the Escape for 2023, so a 2020 does not have those changes.

What changed for 2023 (not on a 2020)

  • Updated front grille and headlights
  • New infotainment system features

Should you avoid the first year of a redesign? See the 45-car study.
