These checks are specific to this model year. For tires, body panels, fluids, and the other basics every used car needs, use the general inspection guide.

Which Tahoe is it?

EPA figures for each version of the 2022 Chevrolet Tahoe. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.

VersionDriveEPA rating
5.3L 8-cylGas4WD, RWD17 mpg
6.2L 8-cylGas4WD, RWD16 mpg
3.0L 6-cylDiesel4WD, RWD22–24 mpg
  • The 2022 Chevrolet Tahoe was sold in three versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
  • Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Tahoe that averages well under the EPA 16 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Check the odometer against these mileages

Owners report these failures starting around the mileages below. A car inside one of these ranges deserves a closer look at that part, or records showing it was already fixed.

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2022 Chevrolet Tahoe, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Engine50No crashes

Sudden loss of power at highway speed is the dominant report. Engines knock, lock up, or shut off without warning, sometimes on bridges or in traffic, and many will not restart. Dealers blame failed lifters, camshafts, and rod or main bearings, and some find metal in the engine. Failures range from about 5,500 miles to past 75,000, on both the 5.3L and 6.2L. Many owners wait 1 to 3 months for a replacement engine while an open recall has no parts. A few report a second failure after repair or after the recall's thicker oil.

Most reports tie back to federal recall campaign 25V274000. Symptoms include loss of power, violent shuddering, stalling at lights and turns, metal-on-metal rattling, and metal shavings in the oil pan that lead to engine replacement. Oil consumption also appears, with a quart added monthly in one case and inconsistent oil-level test results in another. Several owners say recall parts were not yet available. Others were told their VIN was not covered despite matching symptoms. One failure came at 100,000 miles.

  • Electrical25No crashes

Fire, battery drain, and failed OnStar modules lead this category. Fire reports include a center console armrest that ignited while driving, causing an injury, and windshield washer pumps that smoked because power stayed on after shutoff. Other complaints describe weekly no-start battery drain traced to the hands-free liftgate module, blank instrument clusters, wipers that quit in heavy rain, and frozen infotainment screens. OnStar telematics modules fail and are often back-ordered with no delivery date. Several reports pair reduced-acceleration warnings with disabled safety systems.

  • Transmission25No crashes

Transmission valve body failure is the clearest pattern. The truck shifts hard, drops into limp mode, loses propulsion, or will not engage reverse, with codes such as P0700 and P0777. Other reports describe the vehicle shifting into neutral or park at highway speed, or feeling as if the wheels lock up, sometimes with cruise control on. Shuddering persists in some trucks after a transmission recall program. Valve body parts are described as back-ordered nationally, leaving vehicles parked at dealers for weeks.

  • Fuel system7No crashes

Stalling without warning is the main risk, often traced to a failed fuel pump control or driver module. The engine quits while driving or idling and will not restart, sometimes leaving the truck stuck in traffic without steering assist. One report notes the 2021 model had a recall for the same module. Other complaints describe sudden power loss on a freeway ramp, injector misfires on the L87 engine even after a recall engine replacement, and a broken plastic diesel filler neck that spills fuel.

  • Brakes6No crashes

Brake squeal accounts for most reports, a noise issue rather than a stopping failure. Two reports are far more serious. At startup, the dash shows a brake system failure message along with ABS, stability, and traction warnings, and the pedal either sinks to the floor or stays firm without stopping the truck. Both happened at low speed in a parking situation. Dealers could not duplicate the fault once the warnings cleared.

  • Body and structure5No crashes

Roof and windshield leaks are the whole story here. Rainwater collects in the headliner and pours from the overhead console, seat belt slots, and rear vents onto the dash, phone charger, and driver's feet. Leaks start as early as 2 months after purchase. Dealers have removed windshields and headliners and found defective factory welds, yet several leaks return after the next rain. Repeated soaking raises concerns about corrosion and damage to overhead electronics.

  • Seats3No crashes

Headrests that will not lock upright are the main complaint. Second-row captain's chair headrests fail to latch after the seat is folded and returned, and a third-row headrest bends forward so the seat cannot be used. In one case a dealer found a part needing replacement but did not repair it. A separate report describes the sliding front center console failing to lock when extended and shifting under light elbow pressure while driving.

  • Airbags21 crash

Failure to deploy in a crash is the serious report here. In a high-speed collision with front and side impacts, the air bags did not deploy and the driver suffered a permanent shoulder injury. Another complaint describes a service safety restraint system warning that keeps appearing while driving. With only 2 complaints on file, the pattern is thin, but a non-deploying air bag is the most severe outcome in this category.

In owners' own words

Excerpts from complaints Tahoe owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.

Engine
The vehicle has a safety recall stating the vehicle has been affected and the engine could fail during operation and loose propulsion with an increase risk for a crash. There are not any precautions in place or offered neither is there any part available to repair the vehicle in the near future. The vehicle is a 2022 Tahoe with 60,000 miles and still under the manufactures extended warranty and they have no solution to offer any remedy at this time.

Engine
At 30,534 miles, and still under warranty (5.3L V8) I had a complete engine failure without warning. Catastrophic and immediate engine failure. Latest word was a cam and lifter problem on a vehicle still under warranty. Repair time stated at 1-3 months. Engine failure occurred on a business trip en route to Dallas, TX in rural Oklahoma. Paid $275 for towining, $115 for a hotel and $360 for a rental car. Zero compensation.

Filed with NHTSA, April 2025

Electrical
Dash was blank when vehicle was started waited a few minutes before driving did not know speed all was blank. Stopped after driving around 5 miles to decide, to drive home or call for help. After 20 minutes started vehicle this time dash working drove home with no issues. Will call Dealer Monday to report problem.

Filed with NHTSA, December 2022

Electrical
The windshield washer pump began smoking and has burnt electrical smell. Fuses for the washer pump did not blow to disconnect power from the pump. The pump continued to receive power after the key/pushbutton was turned off. This is a potential fire hazard while driving. Also a visibility hazard when the washer pump fails. This vehicle is a City of Cripple Creek, CO police vehicle. This failure has now happened on two of our Police Defenders (Tahoe).

Transmission
While driving the car, going 50 miles an hour down the highway the car slowly comes to a stop goes in the park and stops in the middle of the road. Wouldn’t go into any gear for me to get the vehicle out of the roadway kept flashing message about going into low power mode And vehicle had to be towed to the dealer

Filed with NHTSA, March 2024

Transmission
We were driving down the interstate when the engine shut off. All electrical was on in the car, but the engine turned off. The dash instructed me to press the start button. We were in traffic at the time of the incident with about half full gas tank. I selected neutral and proceeded to start the engine. It started with no issues and was able to be put back in gear. Continued without further issues.

Filed with NHTSA, January 2022

Fuel system
The fuel filler neck for the diesel has a plastic neck extension made of cheap plastic and it broke making it a hazard to even fill the vehicle up and diesel fuel is spilled, not secured, and fumes could cause a fire hazard because the piece is faulty. GM customer service ignores me and transfers me over and over until they hang up and never actually talk to me about this

Filed with NHTSA, September 2025

Fuel system
Engine stalled while driving and vehicle would not restart. Pulled over and was stranded on side of the road. Had vehicle towed to dealer. Was diagnosed as failed fuel pump control module.
