Which Tahoe is it?
EPA figures for each version of the 2019 Chevrolet Tahoe. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.
| Version | Drive | EPA rating |
|---|---|---|
| 5.3L 8-cylGas | 4WD, RWD | 17–18 mpg |
| 6.2L 8-cylGas | 4WD, RWD | 17 mpg |
| 5.3L 8-cylFlex fuel | 4WD, RWD | 17–18 mpg |
- The 2019 Chevrolet Tahoe was sold in three versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
- Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Tahoe that averages well under the EPA 17 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.
Check the odometer against these mileages
Owners report these failures starting around the mileages below. A car inside one of these ranges deserves a closer look at that part, or records showing it was already fixed.
Transmission failure and replacement
70,000–128,000 miles
Why these checks: what owners reported
NHTSA complaints for the 2019 Chevrolet Tahoe, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.
Transmission30No crashes
Transmission failure is the dominant pattern. Symptoms include hesitation, harsh or slipping shifts, a loud shudder, overheated or burnt fluid, and sudden loss of drive power at highway speed while the engine revs. Shops cite a sticking pressure control solenoid (code P0796), a failed torque converter, or metal shavings. Most cases end in a full replacement, usually between 88,000 and 128,000 miles. A separate set of police fleet reports describes stalling and sputtering traced to fuel pumps (code P2635), and some vehicles needed repeat pump replacements.
Electrical121 crash
The faults are spread across several systems. A recurring "Service Trailer Brake System" warning sometimes leads to a module replacement. Screens and gauges flicker, reset on their own, or register phantom button presses, often after rain or a car wash. Some reports describe a sudden loss of power, steering assist, and braking at freeway speed with a blank dash. Others describe a "Reduced Steering Assist" message that disables reverse. Wiper failures and lost communication with the instrument cluster also appear. One injury crash involved airbags that did not deploy.
Engine12No crashes
Internal engine failure is reported on both V8s. On the 5.3L, collapsed lifters and a bent pushrod show up around 92,000 miles, and owners blame the cylinder deactivation system. On the 6.2L, camshaft and rod bearing failures cause sudden seizure or loss of power on highways, often with no warning. Some owners say the same failure is already under federal investigation for later model years. Other symptoms include ticking, knocking, shaking, misfires, blue or white smoke, and heavy oil consumption. One engine reportedly failed twice.
Airbags76 crashes
The main pattern is airbags that fail to deploy in serious crashes. Reports include T-bone and side impacts, a collision with a tree, and hits that damaged the frame. Six of the seven complaints involve crashes and four involve injuries, including head strikes on the steering wheel and fractured ribs. In some crashes the seat belts also failed to lock or retract, and the airbag warning light stayed on afterward. One opposite case describes nearly every airbag firing when a door brushed a fence post at walking speed.
Steering7No crashes
Power steering assist cuts out without warning, sometimes at 70 mph and often right after startup. A "Reduced Steering Assist" warning comes with a heavy or locked wheel, and reverse acts like neutral. Shutting the vehicle off for several minutes usually restores steering, so dealers often cannot reproduce the fault. One report describes a brief total power loss at speed that took out both steering and brakes. Owners point to a recall covering the same issue on 2021 models. Loss of control is the main risk.
Acceleration and cruise control3No crashes
Speed drops unexpectedly at highway speed in the few reports filed. With cruise control set, one vehicle slowed sharply next to semi trucks, then downshifted and sped back up within seconds. Another reports a misfire and loss of speed while merging onto an interstate shortly after purchase. One owner ties the symptoms to an existing safety recall. With only 3 complaints, no clear mileage pattern appears, but every report involves a traffic hazard at speed.
Suspension3No crashes
Struts leak and seize, and air suspension parts corrode, leading shops to recommend replacing the struts on both sides. Drivers describe shaking, rumbling, and the body shifting around over bumps. One alignment and suspension complaint also involved a transmission replacement. A separate idle tremor was blamed on the motor mounts and continued even after new mounts, bolts, and shims were installed. Only 3 complaints were filed, so these read as scattered failures rather than one widespread defect.
Brakes21 crash
Only two complaints were filed. In one, the pedal went stiff and the vehicle rolled forward into a building, causing a crash. The other describes an engine problem more than a brake fault. Power dropped on the highway, the check engine light came on, and the vehicle could not go over 30 mph before it shut down. The dealer said the repair required dropping the engine. No repeating brake defect shows up here.
In owners' own words
Excerpts from complaints Tahoe owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.
Ticking sound started from the motor and the check engine light came on. We took it to the dealership and was informed the vehicle had bad lifters with a bent push rod needing a full motor replacement. The vehicle has 92k miles and was purchased a year and a half ago from that same dealership. The vehicle is currently at the dealership awaiting costly repairs.

Odometer Fraud. The contact purchased a 2019 Chevrolet Tahoe. The contact discovered that there was a mileage discrepancy after the purchase of the vehicle. The vehicle was an independent dealer sale. At the time of purchase, the vehicle mileage was 135,000. It was later discovered, upon checking with an OBD2 Scanner, that the mileage was 220,145. In addition, upon checking Carfax, the mileage was 134,426.

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2015-2020 Chevrolet Suburban, Tahoe, and GMC Yukon, and 2014-2018 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 vehicles equipped with a 5.3-liter engine, a 3.08-ratio rear axle and four-wheel drive. If a wheel-speed sensor fails, while the vehicle is traveling between 41 and 60 mph in four-wheel or automatic mode, the Electronic-Brake Control Module (EBCM) software may activate the driveline-protection system.
Risk: Unintended activation of the driveline-protection system will cause unintended braking on the wheel on the opposite side of the failed sensor, causing the vehicle to pull to one side unexpectedly, increasing the risk of a crash.
Fix: GM will notify owners, and dealers will reprogram the EBCM, free of charge. The recall began December 11, 2019. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-630-2438 or GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782. GM's number for this recall is N192261050.
