Which Expedition is it?

EPA figures for each version of the 2022 Ford Expedition. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.

VersionDriveEPA rating
3.5L 6-cyl4WD, RWD18–19 mpg
  • Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Expedition that averages well under the EPA 18 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Check the odometer against these mileages

Owners report these failures starting around the mileages below. A car inside one of these ranges deserves a closer look at that part, or records showing it was already fixed.

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2022 Ford Expedition, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Electrical17No crashes

The audio system can suddenly blast static, popping, or white noise at full volume while the controls stop responding. In some cases the noise keeps going after the engine is shut off, and three people report ear injuries. Driver-assist features also fail. Front camera fault warnings disable pre-collision assist and adaptive cruise, and blind spot sensors quit because of corroded connector pins. Repeat dealer visits often leave the problem unfixed. Other reports include a blank center screen or instrument panel, rear defrost lines coming loose, and an alternator failure that cut power while driving.

  • Transmission14No crashes

Shifting turns harsh and erratic, most often when the transmission is cold. After a shift into reverse or drive, the vehicle can hesitate or act as if it is in neutral, then slam into gear. Violent downshifts also hit at normal speeds, and one transmission dropped into neutral on the highway. Fluid changes, a torque converter replacement, and software updates often fail to stop it. Complaints start as early as 319 miles. Some owners also report the SUV surging forward after engaging gear, plus a fuel pump failure that cut power in highway traffic.

  • Body and structure10No crashes

The rear spoiler strikes the roof when the liftgate opens, especially in freezing weather or with snow on the vehicle. Owners hear cracking, then find a fractured spoiler and a dent or hole in the roof that can let moisture in. These reports cluster between 19,000 and 40,000 miles, and owners report being refused coverage. Trim also detaches at highway speed, including the sunroof windscreen and the roof rail trim. Smaller complaints cover a leaking moonroof seal and a moldy smell from the vents.

  • Fuel system9No crashes

Most complaints are about waiting rather than breakdowns. Owners hold fuel system recall notices but say dealers have no parts for the repair months after notification. Some are afraid to drive the vehicle in the meantime. Real failures do appear: hesitation when accelerating, a stall at 30 mph with no warning light, and a sudden loss of power after which the engine would not restart. In that last case the dealer found a failed fuel pump module and a battery that needed replacing.

Shuddering that feels like the engine is about to die is the main symptom here, and owners tie it to the low pressure fuel pump. Every complaint centers on a recall repair that owners say has no parts available, with waits of more than 7 months. One owner whose pump failed outright was charged for the repair and refused a rental until a recall fix exists. Drivers say this leaves them in a vehicle they consider unsafe, with no timeline.

  • Brakes81 crash

The brake pedal can drop to the floor without warning when a rubber brake line bursts and the fluid drains out. One such failure ended in a low-speed crash. Several complaints center on a brake line recall notice, with owners describing parts delays or a certified used vehicle sold before the repair was done. Other reports describe sudden hard braking with no driver input and cruise control off, a trailer brake controller that does not apply trailer brakes from the pedal, and a persistent squeal when stopping.

  • Acceleration and cruise control71 crash

Adaptive cruise control raises speed on its own. Owners describe the set speed jumping to 88 or 90 mph, or climbing 15 to 30 mph over the setting on hills or when another car passes. In rain, it can accelerate toward slowing traffic until the driver brakes. One crash report describes the SUV lurching forward while stopped in traffic, with the engine racing even as both feet pressed the brake. Front camera faults also disable cruise and pre-collision assist, and repeated dealer software reloads have not fixed them.

  • Wipers and visibility4No crashes

The driver's side wiper can come loose and hang off the windshield, leaving no working wiper in heavy rain. An owner holding a visibility recall notice reports the repair part is not yet available. Water also collects in the passenger side wheel well, bringing a mildew smell when the A/C first runs and concern about wiring under the carpet. The sunroof glass can burst with a gunshot-like bang while driving. A dealer refused warranty coverage on that sunroof, saying an object hit the glass.

  • Engine31 crash

Unintended acceleration with the brake pressed is the gravest report here. The SUV lurched forward from a stop and hit another car at about 41,000 miles, and four people from that car went to the hospital. The engine also stalls now and then when stopped in traffic after longer drives, and restarting requires shifting into park. No fix has been offered. Another complaint describes a high-pitched noise from underneath and heavy shaking at about 50 mph on a vehicle with 1,000 miles.

In owners' own words

Excerpts from complaints Expedition owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.

Electrical
My vehicle doesn’t alert me of incoming vehicles and the reverse camera stays on. When I turn on my vehicle the dash stays on with ford sign so when I put on reverse my back up camera doesn’t turn on at all. I have to use all my mirrors to back out of parking. This feature hasn’t been working properly for a year. They keep telling me ford is working to fix this issue.

Filed with NHTSA, November 2024

Electrical
The audio system has become inoperable and instead the speakers are blasting static noise with crackling and popping sounds at high volume. Cannot stop it or use any other audio. Very unsafe to drive due to extreme noise level and lack of controls. Appears many people have this issue and there needs to be a recall to fix.

Filed with NHTSA, February 2025

Transmission
While the vehicle is in 2 wheel high, it operates as all the hubs are locked or there is a severe transmission issue. On turns which causes safety issues when trying to navigate corners. My wife hit a curb because of the issue. It causes a severe drag and terrible sound. It also has extremely rough shifting. We had a 2019 Navigator with the same drivetrain that had issues that eventually had to have the motor replaced with less than 10,000 miles.

Filed with NHTSA, September 2023

Transmission
While transmission is cold. You can start to back up into the street and will come to a complete stop half in the road and half out. Like as if it were in neutral. Then I violently slams back into reverse. From there once it in drive. It will skip gear and slam into a lower gear. The car will also come to a complete stop like in reversing when in drive from a cold starting position.
