Which Tahoe is it?

EPA figures for each version of the 2024 Chevrolet Tahoe. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.

VersionDriveEPA rating
5.3L 8-cylGas4WD, RWD17 mpg
6.2L 8-cylGas4WD, RWD16 mpg
3.0L 6-cylDiesel4WD, RWD22–24 mpg
  • The 2024 Chevrolet Tahoe was sold in three versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
  • Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Tahoe that averages well under the EPA 16 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2024 Chevrolet Tahoe, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Engine21No crashes

Sudden shutdowns while driving, often at highway speed, dominate these reports. Power steering and brake assist go with the engine, and many will not restart. Several cases end with a seized engine, spun connecting rods, or a dealer saying the 6.2-liter needs replacing. Other reports describe heavy oil use, low-oil alerts between changes, clanking noise, and low oil pressure lights. Some engines still fail after passing the recall inspection and switching to thicker oil. One stall led to an injury. Failures show up between about 5000 and 21,709 miles.

Most of these reports are about engine recall campaign 25V274000 and repair parts that are not available. Some owners got the notice as early as April 2025, and dealers confirm there are still no parts. Several vehicles stall while waiting. Reports describe knocking, ticking or rattling, hesitation on acceleration, and loss of power, including a highway failure where codes showed the engine needs replacement. One stall at about 14,000 miles happens during a slow turn and nearly causes a crash. Intermittent audio loss is also reported.

  • Electrical10No crashes

Stalling while driving or at stops is common, sometimes with the transmission dropping into neutral and warnings lighting up for the engine, ABS, steering column and traction control. Total audio loss is the second pattern. The radio, Bluetooth, turn-signal clicks, seat belt chimes and blind-spot alerts all go silent, then return after a later restart. Other reports describe key fobs that are not detected, exterior lights and wipers cutting out at night, and a wiring harness on back order. Dealers often cannot find the cause or fix it.

  • Brakes6No crashes

Complete brake failure while driving, often on highways, is the core complaint. A brake system failure message appears, and the pedal either sinks to the floor or must be stood on. Drivers coast to a stop, swerve, or run off the road to avoid crashing. Dealers give different causes: a bad battery, a failed brake system motor that lost communication with the steering, transmission and engine modules, or a brake module that needs full replacement. Some failures come back after a dealer says the brakes were repaired.

  • Transmission3No crashes

Shifting stops or the vehicle drops into limp mode, with a reduced acceleration warning and a check engine light. In two reports, at 11,000 and 13,464 miles, dealers blame the transmission valve body, and the replacement part is on back order. Another report describes the engine shutting off and shifting into neutral in stop-and-go traffic at 5700 miles, followed by clanging and guttural engine noise. These failures leave families stranded on long trips.

  • Steering3No crashes

Brief lockups and sudden jerking of the wheel make up these reports. The wheel locks for 2 to 3 seconds during turns at 25-30 MPH, a no-start comes with a service steering column lock message, and the wheel jerks left and right at 65 MPH. In the jerking case, sheared bolts turn up at about 1,000 miles, and the problem continues after the rear anchor arm is replaced. Each of these creates a real risk of losing control.

  • Airbags21 crash

In a rollover crash, the driver airbag fails to deploy while the curtain and seat airbags do, and a mechanic confirms the malfunction. The driver's face hits the steering wheel and is injured. A separate report pairs an airbag light and service safety restraint message with repeated engine shutdowns that drop the vehicle into neutral in traffic. In that case, the dealer initially finds nothing wrong.

  • Fuel system2No crashes

Sudden highway shutdowns with no warning appear here, traced by a dealer to a failed fuel system control module that gets replaced. That failure happens at just 320 miles. A second report describes a check engine light after refueling and a fuel gauge stuck on full while the app shows 85%. With only two reports, no broader pattern is clear.

In owners' own words

Excerpts from complaints Tahoe owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.

Engine
Driving at highway speeds 70mph, the engine stopped running and vehicle lost all power during heavy rush hour traffic. I was in the middle lane and lost all power breaks and steering, the engine wouldn't restart and I had to force my way to the side of the road. The vehicle only has 21,709 miles and was purchased new less than a year ago. All scheduled maintenance has been performed. The engine is seized and will not restart. There were no warning signs.

Filed with NHTSA, May 2025

Engine
Low Oil Life notification on phone. Since L87 recall, an oil consumption test was stopped and the new type of oil has been added to the vehicle 5k miles ago. Had to add a full quart to register on dip stick. Will now start another oil consumption test with a dealership. I am very concerned about my families safety.

Filed with NHTSA, September 2025

Electrical
Audible warnings for turn signals, Blind Spot monitoring and lane monitoring periodically quits along with all sound from radio and Bluetooth system. Haptic feedback on lane change seems to not function at this time as well. Warning lights function. This has occurred 7 times since Oct 22 2024 when the vehicle was purchased. MFG has been unable to repair.

Filed with NHTSA, December 2024

Electrical
7 weeks after purchase of my new 2024 Tahoe the check engine light came on, showing safety restraint system compromised and then I lost all sound and entertainment features. 4 months later and my car is still sitting in parts at the dealership because wiring harness is on back order.

Filed with NHTSA, February 2025

Brakes
Total system brake failure while driving on interstate. Unable to stop or slow vehicle, had to run off road to avoid traffic and coast to stop.

Filed with NHTSA, May 2025

Transmission
My wife drove the 2024 Tahoe with 13,464 miles to Florida for a beach trip with the kids. The car stopped working while she was driving. The vehicle flashed and the automatic transmission wasn’t changing gears. She manually shifted the gears until arriving at a safe place. The dealer states it is the transmission valve body that needs replaced. The part is on back order and from what the dealer said being built as needed.

Filed with NHTSA, May 2025

Transmission
Brand new 2024 Z71 Tahoe at 11,000 miles had transmission failure due to the transmission valve body failing. No previous issues, has never driven long distance, has never towed anything. While in school drop off line was alerted and given an error message on screen stating “reduced acceleration, drive with caution” placing the vehicle in limp mode and check engine light came on.

Filed with NHTSA, April 2025

Recalls to confirm (3)

Recall repairs are free at any Chevrolet dealer, but the seller may never have had them done. Check each campaign number against the VIN.

  1. 25V619000Fuel systemSep 2025

General Motors, LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2021 Cadillac Escalade, 2021, 2023-2024 Chevrolet Tahoe, and 2022 and 2024 GMC Yukon vehicles equipped with a 6-cylinder diesel engine. The original fuel tank may have been replaced with an incorrect fuel tank, which can allow fuel to leak in a rollover crash.

Risk: A fuel leak in the presence of an ignition source increases the risk of a vehicle fire.

Fix: Dealers will inspect for the correct fuel tank and replace it, if necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed November 5, 2025. Owners may contact Cadillac customer service at 1-800-333-4223, Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020, or GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782. GM's number for this recall is N252512770. Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs) involved in this recall became searchable on NHTSA.gov on September 18, 2025.

  2. 25V274000EngineApr 2025

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2021-2024 Cadillac Escalade and Escalade ESV, Chevrolet Silverado 1500, Suburban, and Tahoe, GMC Sierra 1500, Yukon, and Yukon XL vehicles equipped with a 6.2L V8 gas engine. The connecting rod and/or crankshaft engine components may have manufacturing defects that can lead to engine damage and engine failure.

Risk: Engine failure increases the risk of a crash.

Fix: Dealers will inspect the engine, and as necessary, repair or replace the engine. For vehicles that pass inspection, dealers will add higher viscosity oil, install 6 oil fill cap, replace the oil filter, and update the owner's manual. Repairs will be performed free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed June 18, 2025. Owners may contact Cadillac customer service at 1-800-333-4223, Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020, or GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782. GM's number for this recall is N252494000.

  3. 24V674000BrakesSep 2024

The electronic brake control module software may fail to display a warning light when a loss of brake fluid occurs. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Vehicle Safety Standard number 135, "Light Vehicle Brake Systems.".

Risk: Without a warning light, the vehicle may be driven with low brake fluid, which can reduce braking performance and increase the risk of a crash.

Fix: The Electronic Brake Control Module (eBCM) software will be updated through an over-the-air (OTA) update or by a dealer, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed October 25, 2024.
