Which Tahoe is it?

EPA figures for each version of the 2020 Chevrolet Tahoe. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.

VersionDriveEPA rating
5.3L 8-cylGas4WD, RWD17–18 mpg
6.2L 8-cylGas4WD, RWD17 mpg
5.3L 8-cylFlex fuel4WD, RWD17–18 mpg
  • The 2020 Chevrolet Tahoe was sold in three versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
  • Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Tahoe that averages well under the EPA 17 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2020 Chevrolet Tahoe, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Electrical9No crashes

A "service trailer brake system" warning that comes on by itself is the most common complaint, often with alarm tones. It appears even on trucks that never towed a braked trailer, and one report puts it near 60,000 miles. The backup camera shows blurry striped lines, then a blue "service rear vision system" screen. Other reports describe keyless entry missing the fob and locking keys inside, and StabiliTrak alerts with lost steering and brake assist below 5 mph. In one case the auxiliary battery exploded. A GM service bulletin covers relay overheating that melts its terminals.

  • Engine8No crashes

Most of these complaints describe the transmission, not the engine. At 55 to 65 mph, RPMs jump and the truck feels like it is in neutral. Others drop into first gear on the expressway, which nearly caused a rear-end collision. Reverse can hesitate or fail to engage afterward. Owners cite an existing transmission recall and want it widened, and one faced a bill over $7000. Separate reports describe engine failures: an engine that seized soon after purchase, a broken piston, and a cylinder 1 misfire with white exhaust smoke. Oil pan and rear main seal leaks appear at 85,000 miles.

  • Transmission6No crashes

Transmissions fail suddenly. RPMs rise but the truck barely moves or stops dead in traffic, often with no warning light. Two reports put this near 100,000 miles, and one replacement cost $5500. Other signs include a high-pitched whine between 2nd and 3rd gear, dark gritty fluid, and metal shavings in the filter. One truck under 10,000 miles had clicking front hubs that shed metal shavings and needed replacement. Another complaint describes lifter ticking from the valve covers.

  • Steering51 crash

Power steering assist cuts out without warning, often at low speed or at a stop, and the wheel turns very stiff. Some trucks recover after a restart. One shows a "steering assist" message along with lost acceleration and a check engine light that the dealer could not reproduce. Rack-and-pinion failures appear between about 43,000 and 60,000 miles, either as creaking and groaning or a wheel that suddenly goes firm. One crash with 6 injuries followed a steering wheel that locked while slowing for a U-turn.

  • Airbags32 crashes

Two crash reports say the air bags did not deploy in heavy frontal impacts that caused serious injuries, including a neck fracture. In one of those, a mechanic found a bent or broken air bag bracket at about 16,000 miles. Separately, a restraint system warning light flickers on and off and then stays lit. A software update did not fix it.

  • Brakes3No crashes

The brake pedal turns very hard and the truck does not slow as expected. A "Brake Assist" warning appears, and the app shows an antilock brake message. One report describes the inner faces of both front rotors flaking off in chunks at 35,500 miles while the outer faces stay smooth. Another describes a design concern with the power-adjustable pedals: the height gap between gas and brake can catch a shoe on the side of the brake pedal.

  • Fuel system3No crashes

The engine stalls, shakes, or idles rough after a check engine light, sometimes with hard shifts and hesitation. One truck had all 8 fuel injectors and both fuel rails corroded and snapped, which left it undrivable. Another had a failed high-pressure fuel pump that put fuel in the oil, leaving it thin and smelling of gas. That owner notes the part was recalled on other vehicles for bad welds and raises a fire risk.

  • Wheels and tires21 crash

A rear tire came completely off the rim in a slow left turn, and the truck hit a house. The tires had fewer than 100 miles on them, and the pressure warning lit only after the tire came off. In another report, a rear tire kept losing air from multiple pinholes and could not be repaired at 15,000 miles.

In owners' own words

Excerpts from complaints Tahoe owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.

Electrical
Auxiliary battery exploded while vehicle was in operation. Explosion caused damage to front driver side headlight, hood insulation, windshield washer reservoir, terminal covers and battery. See attached images. Later learned of GM service bulletin (19-NA-099) regarding overheating of relay causing melted terminals on auxiliary battery

Electrical
Back up camera does not work. Quick google search shows this is a common issue in GM vehicles with no real identifiable fix. Starts with blurred lines and within weeks it turns to just a blue screen. Backup camera is a safety feature and therefore should be investigated by NHTSA.

Filed with NHTSA, February 2023

Engine
We have the L86 6.2L EcoTech 3 Engine. at 85,000 miles we noticed the oil pan is leaking and rear main seal is leaking. Both are common issues with the L87 engine as well.

Filed with NHTSA, January 2026

Engine
We are concerned that the transmission recall should be including ALL 2020 Tahoe’s. We were driving at 55 MPH and our RPM suddenly excelled and the vehicle felt like it was in neutral. This happened several times in a short distance. When we arrived home and tried to put in reverse it hesitated to move and then finally engaged. Getting it into dealership this week.

Filed with NHTSA, February 2025

Transmission
While driving making left and right turns a clicking noise was noticed. Vehicle also felt like it was engaged in 4wd when making turns on loose pavement by skipping, vehicle confirmed to be in 2wd mode. Vehicle has less than 10,000 miles. Dealership was able to determine that the noise was coming from the front hubs and saw metal shavings.Chevy Dealership suggested to have both front hubs replaced.

Filed with NHTSA, August 2023

Transmission
There is an unusual lifter/ticking noise coming from the valve covers on my vehicle. The vehicle is scheduled to go to the Chevrolet dealership on the 15th of this month but it sounds like the numerous other GM motors that have the failing lifters.

Filed with NHTSA, April 2025

Steering
Creaking and groaning from rack and pinion. 60,000 miles on vehicle. no other issues. Potential steering system failure. No warning lights. Happens at all speeds.

Filed with NHTSA, September 2025

Steering
Stopped at a traffic light my power steering warning light on the dash came on. After that I had no power steering, and the vehicle is very difficult to steer. I drove back to my location turn the vehicle off and who won out about an hour later started and the power steering was working. Upon looking the issue up online I found that other models of my Tahoe have had a recall but no particular model has not.

Recalls to confirm (3)

Recall repairs are free at any Chevrolet dealer, but the seller may never have had them done. Check each campaign number against the VIN.

  1. 21V115000Wheels and tiresFeb 2021

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2020 Buick Enclave, Cadillac XT4, XT5, Escalade, Escalade ESV, Chevrolet Suburban, Tahoe, Traverse, GMC Yukon, Yukon XL, 2018-2021 Chevrolet Express, GMC Savana, 2019-2020 Chevrolet Blazer, Silverado 1500, GMC Acadia, Sierra 1500, and certain Continental tires sold to the aftermarket for various model year 2018-2021 vehicles. The affected tires were cured for too long during production.

Risk: Over cured tires may develop a break in the sidewall resulting in sudden air loss or a belt edge separation which could lead to a tread/belt loss. Either condition can cause a loss of vehicle control, increasing the risk of a crash.

Fix: GM will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the tires, replacing them as necessary, free of charge. The recall began March 22, 2021. Owners may contact GMC customer service at 1-888-988-7267, Buick customer service at 1-866-608-8080, Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020 or Cadillac customer service at 1-800-458-8006. GM's number for this recall is N212329050.

  2. 19V837000Fuel systemNov 2019

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2020 Cadillac Escalade, Escalade ESV, Chevrolet Camaro, Silverado 1500, Suburban, Tahoe, GMC Sierra 1500, Yukon, and Yukon XL vehicles. The fuel pump may be missing a pressure regulator, allowing for over-pressurization of the fuel system.

Risk: Over-pressurization can crack the fuel pump and cause leaks, increasing the risk of a fire in the presence of an ignition source.

Fix: GM will notify owners, and dealers will replace the fuel pump, free of charge. The recall began December 18, 2019. Owners may contact Cadillac customer service at 1-800-333-4223, Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020, or GMC customer service at 1-888-988-7267. GM's number for this recall is N192283991.

  3. 19V761000BrakesOct 2019

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2015-2020 Chevrolet Suburban, Tahoe, and GMC Yukon, and 2014-2018 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 vehicles equipped with a 5.3-liter engine, a 3.08-ratio rear axle and four-wheel drive. If a wheel-speed sensor fails, while the vehicle is traveling between 41 and 60 mph in four-wheel or automatic mode, the Electronic-Brake Control Module (EBCM) software may activate the driveline-protection system.

Risk: Unintended activation of the driveline-protection system will cause unintended braking on the wheel on the opposite side of the failed sensor, causing the vehicle to pull to one side unexpectedly, increasing the risk of a crash.

Fix: GM will notify owners, and dealers will reprogram the EBCM, free of charge. The recall began December 11, 2019. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-630-2438 or GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782. GM's number for this recall is N192261050.
