Which Tahoe is it?
EPA figures for each version of the 2018 Chevrolet Tahoe. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.
| Version | Drive | EPA rating |
|---|---|---|
| 5.3L 8-cylGas | 4WD, RWD | 18–19 mpg |
| 6.2L 8-cylGas | 4WD, RWD | 17 mpg |
| 5.3L 8-cylFlex fuel | 4WD, RWD | 18–19 mpg |
- The 2018 Chevrolet Tahoe was sold in three versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
- Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Tahoe that averages well under the EPA 17 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.
Check the odometer against these mileages
Owners report these failures starting around the mileages below. A car inside one of these ranges deserves a closer look at that part, or records showing it was already fixed.

Transmission slipping or failure
80,000–110,000 miles
Why these checks: what owners reported
NHTSA complaints for the 2018 Chevrolet Tahoe, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.
Transmission14No crashes
The transmission slips, hesitates, bounces rpm at steady speed, or stops pulling entirely, often with no warning light. Some trucks overheat the transmission into limp mode, shake hard, or stall and shut off in traffic. Reported failures cluster from about 80,000 to 110,000 miles, and repeat failures after repair appear. A torque converter contaminated with metal is one diagnosis. Collapsed lifters that damage the camshaft also show up, with one repair quoted at $7,100. Sudden power loss on highways is the main safety risk.
Brakes122 crashes
Brake assist fades and the pedal turns hard, so the SUV takes longer to stop. A failed brake vacuum pump is the usual diagnosis, with failures near 84,000 to 92,104 miles. Service Brake Assist warnings, a vibrating pedal, and a ticking noise come with it. Owners often find their VIN is left out of the recall or special coverage. Two reports involve crashes, one with an injury, including a case where forward automatic braking never engaged. Some trucks also pull hard to one side under braking while showing a trailer brake failure message.
Engine12No crashes
Lifter failures destroy the camshaft and lead to full engine replacement, with no warning lights before the truck loses power. Engine failures are reported anywhere from 22,949 to 83,000 miles, often with a stall or sudden power loss on the highway. A flashing check engine light with misfires on several cylinders is another pattern. Several filings here actually describe transmission failure, including one costly combined engine and transmission repair just past warranty. Repeat fuel pump failures and A/C condenser weld cracks also appear.
Valve train failure is the pattern here. The engine rattles and knocks at startup or abruptly loses power at highway speed with the check engine light on. Diagnoses name failed lifters, the camshaft, and the valve train, with failures around 90,000 and 104,163 miles. Back-ordered parts delay repairs. Owners say their VINs are not included in recall campaign 25V274000 even though the symptoms match.
Electrical11No crashes
A Service Trailer Brake System warning with a constant chime is the most common fault, even on trucks that have never towed. In some cases the SUV will not start or slows down while the message is showing. Dealers point to a faulty harness or body control module, and repairs sometimes fail to stick. Other reports describe the whole vehicle losing electrical power while running, a passenger window that rolls back down, a power tailgate that keeps closing on a person, and a grainy backup camera at night.
Steering11No crashes
Power steering assist cuts out without warning and a Steering Assist Is Reduced message appears. The wheel becomes very stiff, sometimes in the middle of a turn at road speed. It often happens at startup and may clear after the truck sits for a while. Diagnoses vary. Some point to a weak battery or a bad ground cable, others to a failed electric steering gear. Failures show up on low-mileage trucks and on ones past 120,000 miles. Owners outside the special coverage report paying over $2,000 and waiting weeks because of a part shortage.
Fuel system3No crashes
A fuel smell in the cabin and garage comes from leaking fuel injector seals, which a mechanic called a known issue tied to a 2019 bulletin. Another report describes a fuel gauge dropping to empty on a full tank, then the engine shutting off while driving on both highways and city streets. A failed fuel pressure sensor was the diagnosis there. One owner also reports the engine revving on its own with the foot off the gas.
Acceleration and cruise control2No crashes
The brakes apply by themselves and stay stuck, sometimes at 60 mph on the highway. It tends to follow activation of forward collision braking or hill assist, with the ABS light on. Earlier symptoms include a sticking caliper that sends smoke from the wheel, and an ABS sensor replacement does not fix it. A separate report says the brake pedal sits too close to the driver compared with the gas pedal, so the foot can get caught between them.
Exterior lights2No crashes
IntelliBeam headlight assemblies fail, and replacement parts are hard to find. One owner waited 2 months because no dealer had the part in stock. The other report covers the rear lighting. The backup lights do not light up enough at night in the rain, so the backup camera image shows almost nothing.
In owners' own words
Excerpts from complaints Tahoe owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.
Transmission failure at 110,000 miles. No warning lights, no codes. The transmission was slipping during acceleration, random rpm bouncing at a steady speed, acting lost in gears, slow power up hills then takes off. Currently sitting at a chevy dealership.

While driving home, the the FAC, forward automatic crash, indicator light came on, I applied the brakes and watched to my dismay as my vehicle slowed down but would not stop. I applied steady hard pressure until impact with another vehicle in front of me. The FAB, forward automatic braking system never kicked in. I will contact the dealer concerning the above issue.

Recalls to confirm (3)
Recall repairs are free at any Chevrolet dealer, but the seller may never have had them done. Check each campaign number against the VIN.
20V603000BrakesOct 2020
General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2018 Cadillac Escalade, Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and Tahoe, GMC Sierra 1500 and Yukon vehicles equipped with either a 5.3L or 6.2L V8 engine. The output of the mechanical vacuum pump can decrease over time, decreasing the amount of vacuum/power brake assist.
Risk: A decrease in brake assist can increase the brake pedal effort and distance required to stop the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.
Fix: GM will notify owners, and dealers will reprogram the Electronic Brake Control Module, free of charge. The recall began November 11, 2020. Owners may contact GM customer service at 1-866-522-9559, Cadillac customer service at 1-800-458-8006 or Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-630-2438. GM's number for this recall is N202300860.
19V761000BrakesOct 2019
General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2015-2020 Chevrolet Suburban, Tahoe, and GMC Yukon, and 2014-2018 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 vehicles equipped with a 5.3-liter engine, a 3.08-ratio rear axle and four-wheel drive. If a wheel-speed sensor fails, while the vehicle is traveling between 41 and 60 mph in four-wheel or automatic mode, the Electronic-Brake Control Module (EBCM) software may activate the driveline-protection system.
Risk: Unintended activation of the driveline-protection system will cause unintended braking on the wheel on the opposite side of the failed sensor, causing the vehicle to pull to one side unexpectedly, increasing the risk of a crash.
Fix: GM will notify owners, and dealers will reprogram the EBCM, free of charge. The recall began December 11, 2019. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-630-2438 or GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782. GM's number for this recall is N192261050.
