Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2022 Dodge Durango, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Exterior lights15No crashes

The driver-side LED daytime running light strip in the headlamp goes dark with no warning light. This is by far the most common complaint. The LEDs cannot be replaced on their own, so dealers quote a full headlamp assembly, with estimates from about $1,000 to over $2,000. Some owners report repeat failures, turn signals lost to shorted assemblies, and police warning tickets. Extended warranties often exclude the repair. Water inside the rear lamps and dead rear LED strips also appear, plus one case of both headlights failing at about 59,000 miles.

  • Electrical9No crashes

A USB port catches fire while driving in one report, after the smell of burning plastic and visible smoke. More common are Uconnect faults. A recurring "Uconnect box requires service" message survives repeated dealer visits. Radio screens overheat and black out, taking the backup camera with them until the screen restarts. Several reports repeat the driver-side daytime running light and front turn signal failures, one at 42,890 miles. Others mention a starter relay fault and a fuel pump stall, water in the taillights, and unresolved electrical problems that led to a lemon law claim.

  • Transmission9No crashes

Coolant leaks out and the engine overheats and loses power, sometimes at highway speed. Owners and a dealer trace this to an aluminum coolant line rubbed through by the transmission cooler hose or its clamp. Owners say the manufacturer has not issued a recall and repair quotes run into the thousands. A police fleet reports repeated engine failures. Other reports describe the transmission dropping into neutral while moving, a shifter that locks and will not engage drive, a stall at 50 mph, and a car that barely backs up.

  • Backup camera41 crash

Recall repairs under campaign 24V436000 stall because the part is unavailable, and this makes up most of the reports. Owners say the wait has gone past a reasonable time, and dealers confirm the shortage. One owner describes the instrument panel going dark at times at about 35,000 miles. A single crash report describes the car accelerating on its own in heavy rain as it came to a stop at a light. Automatic braking did not engage, no warning appeared, and the car hit the vehicle ahead.

  • Engine4No crashes

Long cranking ends in a failed start, and the car then starts on the second try. This is the most repeated complaint, and a strong fuel smell sometimes follows. Dealers often cannot reproduce it, and owners say it gets worse over time. One SRT owner reports a catastrophic engine failure on the interstate at 24K miles with no warning, leaving the car coasting without power. That owner says other SRT owners report the same. Another report describes fueling that keeps stopping, making the tank hard to fill, and hesitation when pulling away.

  • Fuel system2No crashes

The first start attempt fails and the engine catches on the second try. One owner reports this on about 50% of starts within the first month, and the selling dealer could not replicate it. A fuel pump failure causes slow starts and an engine that shuts off. Owners worry about being stranded. These reports match the hard-start complaints under the engine category and the fuel pump stall noted under the electrical system.

  • Brakes2No crashes

The brake pedal goes to the floor before the car stops. One owner reports this twice in 9 months with no warning lamp, and the dealer confirmed the failure. The other report concerns recall campaign 24V415000, which covers stability control and service brakes. The repair part is unavailable and the owner says the wait has gone past a reasonable time. No failure occurred in that case.

In owners' own words

Excerpts from complaints Durango owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.

Exterior lights
Headlight assembly’s short out causing blinkers not to work. This is for the 2021 and up Durango’s. I am on my 2nd headlight assembly replacement. I know other 2021+ Durango owners that have the same issue and I also see multiple newer Durango’s on the road with the same issue. Consumers should not have to pay out of pocket for this repair as it is apparently a common and known issue that cost thousands to fix. Dodge needs to make this right.

Filed with NHTSA, March 2024

Exterior lights
Left side daytime running light failed, Yes, currently available for inspection Issue causes oncoming vehicle visibility issue The problem has been confirmed by dealer and has been reproduced. The issue also happens to other Mopar vehicles with LED DRL strips. Component has been inspected by dealer only. Has not gone up the chain. No other warning lamps or messages were displayed. Vehicle passed all internal tests before dealer computer scan.

Filed with NHTSA, August 2025

Electrical
Driver side DRL malfunction and impacts visibility at night. No warning/error codes. Starter Relay causing no crank/Fuel pump failure causing me to stall out in the middle of a intersection

Filed with NHTSA, July 2025

Transmission
The transmission dropped after being stopped at a stop light and lightly accelerating. When this happened the vehicle dropped to neutral. After pulling over it did go into first gear but that’s it. When in reverse it moves a foot then goes back in to neutral.

Filed with NHTSA, June 2025

Transmission
Vehicle will not shift into drive. This issue is similar to the ZB3 problem. Improperly heat treated shifter parts failed and will not allow the transmission to shift into drive.

Filed with NHTSA, December 2025
