Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2025 Chevrolet Tahoe, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Engine5No crashes

Sudden power loss and complete engine failure lead these reports. Drivers describe a flashing check engine light, limp mode, stalling in traffic, and loud knocking or squealing from the engine bay before it quits. Dealers have grounded vehicles for excessive crankshaft play from thrust bearing failure at very low mileage. Other trucks need a new transmission valve body. Losing power at speed or in a travel lane is a real crash risk. Several owners are left waiting on dealers, with parts on back order and no return date.

  • Electrical3No crashes

Displays and power systems fail without warning. The driver dash can freeze, so speed, turn signals, and gear position stop showing correctly, while the center screen and charging ports go dead. Some reports filed here are really engine failures on the 3.0L Duramax, which loses power while towing and needs full engine replacement for crank end play and thrust bearing defects under TSB 25-NA-307. Unresolved infotainment faults also come up. Another complaint notes the parking brake works only at a full stop, so it offers no backup if the main brakes fail.

  • Brakes3No crashes

Braking power drops suddenly. Drivers report ABS, ESC, and trailer brake errors appearing at highway speed, a pedal with little or no feedback, and stopping that works only under hard pressure. In some cases the car cannot stop at an intersection. A separate complaint about the Z71 describes the foot catching on the brake pedal when moving off the accelerator, which delays braking. Each of these patterns carries a direct crash risk, especially in sudden stops.

  • Steering2No crashes

Brake and engine faults show up here more than steering problems. Reports describe the brake pedal sinking to the floor along with a cascade of warnings, including Service Steering Column Lock, Service Brake Assist, Service ESC, and Trailer Brake Disabled. Loud noises from the steering column also appear. A ticking or knocking engine at idle comes and goes, and owners suspect the same fault as the recalled L87 6.2 engines. Dealers have had trouble reproducing the noise during service visits.

In owners' own words

Excerpts from complaints Tahoe owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.

Engine
Bought the 2025 Chevy Tahoe, had about 680 miles on it. 400 of which were from the dealership. Had the pleasure of driving it for a week. Check engine light came on and was told that the transmission valve body had gone bad. The issue regarding that particular transmission has existed since 2019. However the part needed is allegedly on back order, and GM has no idea when they will get that part in.

Engine
4/24 The check engine light was flashing and the car went into limp mode and the display noted to pull over for safety. On 4/25 We took the car to the dealer they did some reprogramming. On 4/26 the vehicle keeps loosing power when driving.. Scheduled another appointment on 4/28 to have vehicle looked at.

Filed with NHTSA, April 2025

Brakes
Brake system failure. Brakes were all but gone as I couldn't safely stop my car at an intersection and had to quickly cut in front of on coming traffic to go into a gas station to avoid running a red light.
