These checks are specific to this model year. For tires, body panels, fluids, and the other basics every used car needs, use the general inspection guide.

Which Yukon is it?

EPA figures for each version of the 2018 GMC Yukon. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.

VersionDriveEPA rating
5.3L 8-cylGas4WD, RWD18–19 mpg
6.2L 8-cylGas4WD, RWD17 mpg
5.3L 8-cylFlex fuel4WD, RWD18–19 mpg
  • The 2018 GMC Yukon was sold in three versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
  • Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Yukon that averages well under the EPA 17 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Check the odometer against these mileages

Owners report these failures starting around the mileages below. A car inside one of these ranges deserves a closer look at that part, or records showing it was already fixed.

  • Leaking shocks and struts

    55,000–70,000 miles

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2018 GMC Yukon, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Engine24No crashes

Lifter and camshaft failure dominates these reports. Symptoms include a ticking or knocking engine, misfire codes, sputtering, and a sudden loss of power under acceleration. Several engines shut off at highway speed or at idle and would not restart, leaving drivers without power steering or power brakes in traffic. Many failures come with no warning light. Most dated failures fall between 67,049 and 81,000 miles, and the usual outcome is a full engine replacement. Owners note that the related GM recall starts with 2019 models and leaves 2018 out. Long waits for replacement engines and oil burning also appear.

  • Transmission191 crash

Transmission trouble is the main pattern. Owners describe slipping, hesitation, jerky or clunking shifts, and engine revs rising without added speed. Others report torque converter shudder at 40 to 50 mph, a "Transmission Hot" message, limp mode, unexpected shifts into neutral while driving, and no reverse. Fluid changes and reprogramming often fail to help, and several owners end up replacing the whole transmission, with reports at 101,000 and 104,000 miles. Radiator leaks tied to thermostat cycling and repeated motor mount replacement also come up. One crash report describes a rear wheel separating from the axle while exiting a highway.

  • Brakes111 crash

Loss of brake assist is the recurring problem. The pedal turns hard, a brake assist warning appears, and stopping distances grow, mostly at low speeds, in parking lots, and right after startup. Dealers trace it to the brake vacuum pump, and some replacement pumps fail again within days. Owners cite earlier vacuum pump recalls and special coverage and argue their trucks should be included. One crash report describes the SUV slowing but not stopping under hard braking. Other complaints cover brakes dragging until they smoked and a false "Service Trailer Brake" alarm with no trailer attached.

  • Suspension10No crashes

Leaking shocks are the main issue. Front magnetic shocks and rear air shocks leak oil, and the ride turns rough, bottoming out or bouncing hard, including while towing a trailer. Failures cluster around 55,000 to 70,000 miles. Replacement parts are often back-ordered or unavailable, leaving some owners renting cars while they wait. Quoted repair costs run from $1,450 to $2500. A few complaints filed here actually describe rear brake squealing and caliper work, or lifter engine failures covered under the engine category.

  • Steering7No crashes

Power steering assist cuts out, often with a "Service Power Steering" or "Steering Assist Is Reduced" message, and the wheel becomes very hard to turn. Some reports say it fails on cold starts and then returns to normal, which makes dealers hard to convince. One pattern pairs reduced steering assist with StabiliTrak, forward collision, and adaptive cruise warnings at once. Another links lost steering at low speed in left turns to a battery voltage drop. Front-end noises when turning also appear, and dealers frequently find nothing wrong.

  • Seat belts41 crash

Second-row seat belt retractors stop retracting, leaving belts loose. In some cases something inside the retractor rubs and cuts the webbing, and one belt snapped. Replacing both second-row retractors is quoted at $1600. One crash report with 3 injuries says the belt holding a child car seat in the third row did not stay tight. A separate complaint describes the driver seat moving on its own during acceleration, which pushes the driver away from the pedals.

  • Airbags32 crashes

Front airbags failing to deploy in serious crashes is the main concern. Two crash reports describe front or front-side impacts where side airbags fired but the front bags did not, with 4 injuries in total and one fire. A separate report covers a "Service SRS" warning traced to a faulty front passenger seat airbag control module at 50,000 miles. Only 3 complaints are on file here.

  • Electrical31 crash

A recurring "Service Trailer Brake System" message pops up and keeps returning after it is dismissed, even with no trailer in use. Rear brake lights also cut out intermittently while driving. One crash report with 3 injuries describes a 30 to 35 mph T-bone collision where the owner believes the airbags should have deployed and suspects a faulty sensor. With only 3 complaints on file, the trailer brake warning is the only repeated problem.

In owners' own words

Excerpts from complaints Yukon owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.

Engine
Took the car to the dealer after getting alert from my GMC app saying it needed emission serviced, engine light came on, antilock brakes needing serviced. The dealership said that the engine is blown at just over 71200 miles. This car has only had service done at the dealership except for a tire change.

Filed with NHTSA, October 2025

Engine
While stopped and isling, the engine shut off and would not restart. had I been moving, steering, braking, etc would have been compromised. Repair facility identified catastrophic engine failure at 48k miles on the vehicle.

Filed with NHTSA, May 2025

Transmission
NHTSA's recall number 25V-274. This vehicle should fall under this recall it happed to the this motor at 58k miles and I had to put a whole motor in it at 58k miles in 2022. The Yukon Denali has the L87 V8. I bought the new motor threw GM so it should be tied to this vin number

Filed with NHTSA, April 2025

Transmission
Had transmission issues (slipping, jerking and jumping ), while driving on highway. it will not accelerate when pressing the gas and would accelerate randomly / jumping fast Uphill it wont move forward on drive grar, instead it rolls back, which can hit rear vehicle. very dangerous and not derivable with bad trans as it can lead to accidents. its very common and reoccurring issue with GMC Yukon 2018 (SLT, SLE, Denali, Yukon XL..etc models )

Filed with NHTSA, August 2023

Brakes
The vacuum pump seized causing the breaks to not work, brake assist not working code shows. The pump was replaced and after a week the same issue happened (vacuum pump seized) breaks are not working again.

Filed with NHTSA, April 2024

Brakes
The service trailer brakes alarm will just off incessantly which is a major safety hazard and it’s due to faulty wiring. I’m not happy about this at all GMC needs to recall these vehicles.

Filed with NHTSA, June 2022

Suspension
Air conditioner condenser faulty and had to repaired. Premium Ride Shocks faulty and had to be repaired. Lifters and bent pushrod faulty and had to be repaired. Vehicle currently has approximately 70,000 miles. These are all known issues by GM and very expensive to fix and no recalls.

Filed with NHTSA, November 2025

Suspension
2018 Yukon Denali engine failed June 2024 due to the lifter being bent. The dealership Richey Cadillac in Daytona Beach estimated the repairs at $18,862 and were going to have my vehicle for months. I took it to my mechanic who rebuilt the engine for $7181 in 30 days. My safety was placed at risk because while driving I had to pull over since I had no control with the engine failure. There were no messages prior to the failure.

Where the 2018 fits in the Yukon's history

Redesigns and mid-cycle updates change what can go wrong.

The 2018 is the fourth model year of the Yukon's second generation (2015–2023).

GMC updated the Yukon for 2020, so a 2018 does not have those changes.

What changed for 2020 (not on a 2018)

  • Updated front and rear styling
  • New technology features introduced

Recalls to confirm (4)

Recall repairs are free at any GMC dealer, but the seller may never have had them done. Check each campaign number against the VIN.

  1. 20V603000BrakesOct 2020

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2018 Cadillac Escalade, Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and Tahoe, GMC Sierra 1500 and Yukon vehicles equipped with either a 5.3L or 6.2L V8 engine. The output of the mechanical vacuum pump can decrease over time, decreasing the amount of vacuum/power brake assist.

Risk: A decrease in brake assist can increase the brake pedal effort and distance required to stop the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.

Fix: GM will notify owners, and dealers will reprogram the Electronic Brake Control Module, free of charge. The recall began November 11, 2020. Owners may contact GM customer service at 1-866-522-9559, Cadillac customer service at 1-800-458-8006 or Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-630-2438. GM's number for this recall is N202300860.

  2. 19V761000BrakesOct 2019

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2015-2020 Chevrolet Suburban, Tahoe, and GMC Yukon, and 2014-2018 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 vehicles equipped with a 5.3-liter engine, a 3.08-ratio rear axle and four-wheel drive. If a wheel-speed sensor fails, while the vehicle is traveling between 41 and 60 mph in four-wheel or automatic mode, the Electronic-Brake Control Module (EBCM) software may activate the driveline-protection system.

Risk: Unintended activation of the driveline-protection system will cause unintended braking on the wheel on the opposite side of the failed sensor, causing the vehicle to pull to one side unexpectedly, increasing the risk of a crash.

Fix: GM will notify owners, and dealers will reprogram the EBCM, free of charge. The recall began December 11, 2019. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-630-2438 or GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782. GM's number for this recall is N192261050.

  3. 19V645000BrakesSep 2019

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2015-2017 Cadillac Escalade, 2014-2018 Chevrolet Silverado, GMC Sierra, 2015-2018 Chevrolet Suburban, Tahoe, GMC Yukon vehicles. The amount of vacuum created by the vacuum pump may decrease over time.

Risk: As the vacuum level drops, the brake assist decreases, increasing braking effort, extending the distance required to stop the vehicle, thereby increasing the risk of a crash.

Fix: GM will notify owners, and dealers will reprogram the Electronic Brake Control Module, free of charge. The recall began October 8, 2019. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-630-2438, Cadillac customer service at 1-800-458-8006 or GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782. GM's number for this recall is N192268490.

  4. 18V673000Seat beltsSep 2018

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2018-2019 Cadillac CT6, Escalade ESV, Chevrolet Suburban, Volt, and GMC Yukon XL vehicles. Certain second-row or third-row rear seatbelts retractor assemblies may not automatically lock when the seatbelt is fully pulled out of the retractor, possibly preventing a child seat from being properly secured. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 208, "Occupant Crash Protection.".

Risk: If the child seat is not properly secured in the event of a crash, it can increase the risk of injury.

Fix: GM will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the rear seatbelt retractors and replace them if necessary, free of charge. The recall began November 7, 2018. Owners may contact Cadillac customer service at 1-800-458-8006, Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020 or GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782. GM's number for this recall is 18315.
