Which Armada is it?

EPA figures for each version of the 2018 Nissan Armada. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2018 Nissan Armada, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Electrical361 crash

Random no-starts are the dominant failure. The engine clicks or will not crank, sometimes for up to 10 minutes, and batteries keep dying even after repeated replacement while dealers find no fault. Many reports pair this with a BCI Malfunction warning and a cluster of dash lights that disables cruise control, 4-wheel drive, ABS and traction control. One report is crash-related. Owners suspect the brake or stop lamp switch, the body control module, or the charging system. Swapping the switch often helps only briefly. Separately, the center display can go black, taking radio, climate and navigation controls with it.

  • Transmission7No crashes

The transmission shudders or slips at light throttle between about 15 and 40 mph, and RPMs wander as if it is hunting for a gear. Owners blame the torque converter. Other reports describe failure to engage reverse, refusal to shift, stalling in traffic, and sudden loss of acceleration at highway speed, with several near-collisions. Repeat repairs are common. Valve body and full transmission replacements do not always cure the problem, and a dealer declined to cover one transmission replacement.

  • Engine5No crashes

Knocking and outright failure appear, which owners tie to cylinder 7 scuffing, with one failure reported at 68,000 miles. Owners cite a manufacturer service bulletin that calls for a short block or a complete engine replacement, and they report no coverage once the warranty ends. Another report describes a sudden loss of motive power while driving at around 70,000 miles. One describes an engine that hesitates on throttle but pushes forward at a light with the brakes applied. An oxygen sensor code, P0138, also appears.

  • Exterior lights4No crashes

Sections of the instrument cluster go dark or flicker. The 0 to 20 mph stretch of the speedometer and parts of the tachometer are common trouble spots, and the dark area can spread across the gauges. That forces longer glances away from the road. One report puts the problem at 82,456 miles. Owners call it common on 2017 and 2018 models and cite a dash replacement of roughly $1200 before labor. A separate complaint says the headlights glare at oncoming traffic.

  • Brakes4No crashes

The brakes apply on their own. Reports describe sudden hard stops in traffic and while backing out of a driveway with nothing nearby, plus one case of brakes locking hard enough to produce smoke. These episodes usually come with a BCI Malfunction warning, ABS warnings and a spread of other dash lights. Afterward the transmission may refuse to leave park or its current gear until the car is restarted, and sometimes it will not restart at all. Owners suspect a brake pressure sensor or switch fault.

  • Acceleration and cruise control2No crashes

The car brakes itself unexpectedly. In one report it stopped completely at 55-60 mph on the highway with nothing ahead, raising the risk of a rear-end collision. The Forward Emergency Braking light flickers on and off, or a BCI Malfunction message appears along with most of the dash lights. Afterward the car cannot accelerate normally until it is parked and restarted, and it does not always restart right away, which leaves occupants stranded.

  • Fuel system2No crashes

The fuel pump fails at high mileage. One failure mode is stalling after refueling with the check engine light on. The other is a cracked pump near the fuel hose connection that leaks fuel onto the ground and gives off a strong fuel odor while parked, with no warning light beforehand. The reports come at about 114,000 and 157,000 miles, and both point to replacing the pump.

  • Airbags2No crashes

The air bag warning light blinks on and off. In the one detailed report, it came back after an earlier repair for the same fault at 80,000 miles. The cause was not yet determined. The second complaint contains no details. With only two filings and just one usable, there is no wider pattern to report.

In owners' own words

Excerpts from complaints Armada owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.

Electrical
Infotainment system went black with no warning. Effects adjustment to temperature contols, information for maintenance. Radio accessibility, sound, bluetooth, navigation, etc. I have only owned the vehilcle for 1 year, and drove 7500 miles. There was no warning, glitching or flashing. I have been to the dealership and they told me there were no errors to report but only suggested to replace entire infotainment center at $5K.

Electrical
Tired of this !! Battery keeps dying and leaving me stranded. Dealer says battery test fine . Will be fine for a couple days then for no reason hope in car and wont start. Jump start it and it goes. Many others complaining on sites nissan armada has a fuel efficiency alternator resistance . it will on charge battery 85% . Tired of being stranded at random places. have replaced battery several times and this keep happening.

Filed with NHTSA, July 2023

Transmission
It will stall out when we try to start the vehicle. The battery is still pretty new and there are no check engine lights on. It will stall 2 or 3 times but then start about 5 to 10 minutes later.

Filed with NHTSA, September 2023

Transmission
TCC slips, RPMs are all over the place at light throttle between 15-40mph. Believed to be an issue with the torque converter, known to Nissan.

Filed with NHTSA, December 2025

Exterior lights
I have noticed that on my 2018 Nissan Armada, has roughly 82,456 miles on it , an I noticed the RPM between 7/8 don't light up like the other numbers ! And I noticed while driving on the speedometer between 0-20mph on the dash will blink in an out while driving , it does it pretty often, it will stay off quit a bit an then light back up.

Filed with NHTSA, November 2022

Exterior lights
Parts of the dash lights are not illuminated. Seems to be a trend on the 2017-2018 models according to forms I have read. Dash replacements are roughly $1200 not including labor. Kind of steep to expect customers to pay with as many customers having the same issue.

Where the 2018 fits in the Armada's history

Redesigns and mid-cycle updates change what can go wrong.

The 2018 is the second model year of the Armada's second generation (2017–2024).

Nissan updated the Armada for 2021, so a 2018 does not have those changes.

What changed for 2021 (not on a 2018)

  • Redesigned front end
  • Larger grille and LED headlights
  • Updated interior with wider infotainment screen
  • Standard Safety Shield 360

Recalls to confirm (1)

Recall repairs are free at any Nissan dealer, but the seller may never have had them done. Check each campaign number against the VIN.

  1. 19V654000Backup cameraSep 2019

Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain 2018-2019 Nissan Altima, Armada, Frontier, Kicks, Leaf, Maxima, Murano, NV, NV200, Pathfinder, Rogue, Rogue Sport, Sentra, Titan, Titan Diesel, Versa Note and Versa Sedan vehicles, as well as Infiniti Q50, Q60, QX30 and QX80 vehicles. Additionally included are 2019 Nissan GT-R and Taxi and Infiniti QX50, QX60, Q70, Q70L vehicles. The back-up camera and display settings can be adjusted such that the rear view image is no longer visible and the system will retain that setting the next time the vehicle is placed in reverse. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 111, "Rear Visibility.".

Risk: The lack of an image in the back-up camera display increases the risk of a crash.

Fix: Nissan will notify owners in phases, having dealers update the back-up camera settings software, free of charge. The recall began November 11, 2019 and all affected VINs should be activated. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-867-7669 or INFINITI customer service at 1-800-662-6200.
