2021 Colorado

59 owner complaints
  • Steering 9
  • Brakes 8
  • Electrical 7

Worth adding to your 2022 checks

  • Park and shut off the truck several times. The key must come out every time without jiggling the shifter or wheel.
  • Start the truck cold and watch for a service power steering message. Turn lock to lock and feel for heavy or sticky spots.
  • On 2.5-liter trucks, press the brake pedal with the engine running. Reject any truck with a hard pedal. Ask for vacuum pump records.

Which Colorado is it?

EPA figures for each version of the 2022 Chevrolet Colorado. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.

VersionDriveEPA rating
2.5L 4-cylGas4WD, RWD21–22 mpg
3.6L 6-cylGas4WD, RWD19–21 mpg
2.8L 4-cylDiesel4WD, RWD22–23 mpg
  • The 2022 Chevrolet Colorado was sold in three versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
  • Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Colorado that averages well under the EPA 19 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Check the odometer against these mileages

Owners report these failures starting around the mileages below. A car inside one of these ranges deserves a closer look at that part, or records showing it was already fixed.

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2022 Chevrolet Colorado, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Steering11No crashes

Catching, binding, or a notchy feel at low speeds is the main pattern, often while pulling into a parking space. Drivers sometimes have to force the wheel through the grab, with a loud noise. Other reports describe the wheel turning hard in either direction, and one describes a full lockup mid-turn that nearly caused a crash. Dealers often cannot reproduce it. When they do, they replace the steering gear, rack and pinion, column, or intermediate shaft, sometimes without a lasting fix. Several complaints here are really about the ignition key refusing to come out.

  • Electrical9No crashes

The fuel gauge gives false readings. It sticks on Full, drops to Empty at random, or doesn't move for the first 200 miles after a fill-up. The pump also shuts off before the tank is full. Dealers often find nothing wrong, and replacing the fuel sensor kit several times has not fixed it. Gauge trouble starts between about 10,000 and 19,000 miles. Other reports describe the key getting stuck because the shifter doesn't register Park, and the battery draining flat from the infotainment system and stranding drivers. Radio controls going dark when the lights are dimmed is another complaint.

  • Brakes4No crashes

The brake pedal suddenly turns hard and the truck barely slows, with no warning light. In two reports the dealer found a failed vacuum pump that also damaged the engine. Owners saw oil underneath and smoke from the back of the motor. One case involves the 2.5 liter engine. Another was stuck waiting for engine parts on backorder. This failure is a serious loss-of-braking risk. Other complaints describe the front driver-side brake locking up again and again after several dealer visits, and brake pads worn out by about 27000 miles.

  • Transmission21 crash

A truck left in Park rolled backward while the transmission made a whining noise. It crossed a curb and hit a telephone pole, injuring one person, and the air bags did not deploy. The other complaint describes hard downshifts with two clunks just before a stop. On slick roads this makes the truck slide as if the wheels were about to lock. That problem shows up only in freezing weather on a cold start and fades as the truck warms up. The dealer received a letter from GM calling it normal.

  • Body and structure2No crashes

Water gets into the front passenger footwell and soaks the carpet under the floor mat. In the one report, this showed up after driving in heavy rain within days of purchase. The water seemed to come from near the front tire wall, and the truck went back to the dealer to find the cause. The second complaint here is the same stuck ignition key reported under other headings. The driver could only get it out by restarting, rocking the shifter back and forth, and turning the steering wheel.

In owners' own words

Excerpts from complaints Colorado owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.

Steering
Seems to be a common problem but has a notchy feeling in the steering causing you to have to balance the steering wheel back and forth and is unsafe. Feels like it gets stuck. I may sell the truck as it is a safety issue. I only have 22-k miles on the vehicle.

Filed with NHTSA, February 2025

Steering
i am unable to remove the key from the ignition. i have to start the vehicle numerous times all while shifting the gear shifter back and forth between drive and park. after several attempts the key will finally release.

Filed with NHTSA, October 2025

Electrical
The truck only has 12,009 miles on it we purchased it new in November 2021. Now the fuel gage only shows Full regardless of the amount of gas in the tank. Also when we try to fill the tank the gas pump keeps stopping as if the tank is full even when the tank is not. We are extremely uncomfortable to travel any distance. The dealership looked at the issue and said everything checked out ok. It is NOT ok.

Filed with NHTSA, January 2023

Electrical
Battery keeps draining and leaves you stranded at home or at a parking garage. GM knows that over 250,000 vehicles are affected in the Chevy, GMC line and apparently has spread to Cadillac. The problem is that when GM does over the air updates to the vehicles, the computer software will not disconnect and drains the batteries.

Filed with NHTSA, August 2024

Brakes
Locking brakes on the front driver side. Been to the dealer for 5 times for same problem. The problem started 5 days after buying the car and happened several times since than even after having the vehicle service by the dealer.

Recalls to confirm (1)

Recall repairs are free at any Chevrolet dealer, but the seller may never have had them done. Check each campaign number against the VIN.

  1. 22V375000SeatsMay 2022

General Motors, LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2022 GMC Canyon and Chevrolet Colorado vehicles equipped with a manual passenger seat. The front passenger seat may have a hook attachment that was not properly welded, allowing it to separate from the inboard track of the seat frame.

Risk: An improperly welded seat frame may not properly restrain the seat occupant, increasing the risk of injury in a crash.

Fix: Dealers will inspect the front passenger seat and replace the cushion frame, if necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed July 6, 2022. Owners may contact GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782 or Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020. GM's number for this recall is N222368320.
