Which Santa Cruz is it?
EPA figures for each version of the 2022 Hyundai Santa Cruz. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.
| Version | Drive | EPA rating |
|---|---|---|
| 2.5L 4-cyl | AWD, FWD | 23 mpg |
- Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Santa Cruz that averages well under the EPA 23 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Why these checks: what owners reported
NHTSA complaints for the 2022 Hyundai Santa Cruz, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.
Transmission821 crash
Sudden loss of power is the main failure, often while merging or speeding up onto a highway. The transmission stops shifting, revs climb with little speed, or the truck goes into limp mode. Sometimes a transmission warning appears and sometimes nothing does. Dealers often cannot reproduce it, and several trucks get replacement transmissions, some before 20,000 miles. Other reports describe shuddering, hard shifts, and misfires traced to fuel injectors. One crash report describes a parked truck rolling forward while a "Shift To Park" message showed.
Engine15No crashes
The clearest pattern is misfires and rough running traced to failing fuel injectors. It comes with a check engine light, shaking when accelerating, and reduced power. Some trucks need several injectors replaced over repeat visits, and dealer waits stretch to weeks. Early reports describe the engine shutting off mid-drive under 500 miles, knocking on cold starts, and power loss that a restart clears. Two owners report punctured or leaking radiators that dealers called road damage, not a warranty defect.
Electrical14No crashes
Stalling and sudden power loss at highway speed come up again and again here, often with no warning light. Sometimes the truck will not restart, or it restarts and runs rough. Other reports describe a backup camera that goes black about half the time and an idle stuck at 1200 RPM. Owners also report every dash warning light coming on at once and road-hazard alerts repeating after a navigation update. Several owners describe a fire risk from the tow hitch wiring, with advice to park outside and no repair available yet.
Exterior lights8No crashes
Weak low beams are the main complaint. Owners with halogen and with LED headlights say the beams reach only a short distance or have a dark spot or shadow in them. That makes night driving on unlit or curvy roads hard. Automatic headlights also switch on under shadows and overpasses, then stay on for a while and dim the dash. Dealers generally say the lights are operating as designed and offer no fix.
Acceleration and cruise control6No crashes
The truck will not accelerate past roughly 20 to 35 mph, even with the pedal pressed. Sometimes the engine revs high while speed stays flat. Most cases show no warning light and clear after shutting the engine off and restarting, which makes them hard for a shop to reproduce. The main risk is being stuck at low speed on a highway on-ramp. Other reports describe adaptive cruise and other driver-assist features shutting down, in one case after a front license plate was installed.
Fuel system5No crashes
Fuel injectors fail repeatedly, causing hard starts and a rough, struggling idle. One owner reports a third injector failure, two on the same cylinder, with under 80,000 miles on the truck. The latest one fell outside warranty. Other reports cover an evaporative emissions vent valve stuck closed and a fuel door actuator that jams so the tank cannot be opened or closed properly. Owners also describe losing power while driving and coasting to the roadside.
Airbags33 crashes
No airbag deployment in a crash is the issue in all 3 complaints, and each one involves injuries, 4 in total. Reports include a box truck hitting the front and driver side at about 20 to 25 mph, and a chain collision at 40 mph in which the driver hit the steering wheel. One driver says the seat belt also failed to hold. Hyundai told one owner the impact was not severe enough to trigger deployment.
Automatic emergency braking3No crashes
Automatic emergency braking engages for no reason, including at 62 mph and in abrupt stops on an empty freeway. Other reports describe every driver-assist warning firing one after another while the air conditioning stops blowing cold. Lane assist also steers the truck off the road or across double yellow lines. Dealers find no cause, and sensor updates do not stop the problem. One report puts the failure at 30,000 miles.
In owners' own words
Excerpts from complaints Santa Cruz owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.
This car only has 150 miles on it. At 50 miles an hour the transmission refused to shift & the car RPMs surged with a loss of power. It remained at 5000 rpms with my fott OFF the accelerator. I then needed to manually shift out of automatic it to get it to drop the RPMS start driving again. It was dangerous & another person might not have known how to get going again & caused a chain reaction accident at highway speeds.

2022 Santa Cruz with 5850 miles ... lost power when accelerating on busy road (avoided accident) ... Transmission Control System malfunction warning ... notified by dealer transmission will need to be replaced

Engine stuttering at random like it is going to die out. And a major safety issue four times, so far, with less than 1800 miles on the vehicle, the engine has died mid drive and flashes error on dash that engine is off and to put in neutral and restart. The last 2 dates being 6/12 & 6/26/2022. The first engine shutdown started with less than 500 miles on the vehicle. Very unsafe on the road.

Getting an error multiple times under 500 miles. It has been coming and going since 200 miles. Transmission system error! Check transmission oil immediately. This is going on with multiple Santa cruzs

My new car with less than 2000 miles stalled at a traffic light on Southlake Blvd. in Southlake, TX. It just died and would not start. All the electrical warning lights were flaring. Every time I tried to restart it, it would try, shudder, and die. I was lucky not to get run over on that busy street. It was towed to the dealership and has been there a month exactly. They cannot figure out what is wrong.

This vehicle was subject to a recall regarding a fire hazard due to faulty OEM wiring harnesses provided with the towing/hitch package. The recall was because of fire risk by the harness and it was recommended the vehicle be parked outside. A repair has not yet been made available by the manufacturer.

Halogen headlights too dim, even on high beams. Called dealership and was told they couldn’t switch to a brighter bulb. Was also told I couldn’t convert to LED headlights without voiding warranty; that if I wanted LED headlights I should have “purchased a higher trim model”. I purchased the SEL with activity package trim and you would think an almost $40,000 vehicle would have better headlights than this.

Low beam lights shine very low and only light about 20’ ahead. On Arkansas curvy country roads, it is difficult to see what is on the road ahead. I have talked to dealer and was told nothing can be done to improve them. Mine are LED. This has been a problem since purchase in April. I avoid night driving because of this.

Where the 2022 fits in the Santa Cruz's history
Redesigns and mid-cycle updates change what can go wrong.
The 2022 is the first model year of the Santa Cruz's first generation (2022–2023). First years of a redesign often carry teething problems that Hyundai fixes in later years, so the checks above matter more than usual.
Hyundai updated the Santa Cruz for 2025, so a 2022 does not have those changes.
What changed for 2025 (not on a 2022)
- New headlights with redesigned LED daytime running lights
- New front fascia
- New grille
- New exterior colors
- New alloy wheel designs
- New curved panoramic screen with two 12.3-inch displays
Should you avoid the first year of a redesign? See the 45-car study.
