Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2025 Chevrolet Colorado, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Brakes7No crashes

The brake master cylinder fails on nearly new trucks, sometimes within days of purchase. The pedal can push back, then sink to the floor with little stopping power. Several warnings tend to appear together: ABS, brake, traction control, and service messages for ESC, Brake Assist, and Trailer Brake. One truck also showed a speed-limit warning, and another lost acceleration as if it were in neutral. This is a real crash risk. Dealers often won't release the truck, the replacement part is reported on national backorder, and one dealer blamed the battery before the warnings returned.

  • Electrical4No crashes

Headlights and interior lights pulse or dim whenever the heated seats or heated steering wheel are on. It happens at idle and at speed, cuts night visibility, and can confuse other drivers. Dealers have reproduced the problem. One suggested aftermarket LED bulbs at the owner's cost, and Chevrolet admitted the issue by email but offered no fix. A separate report describes the instrument cluster going black at startup. In that case the dealer cited a service bulletin, made no repair, and told the owner to wait for a recall letter.

  • Transmission2No crashes

The transmission fails suddenly while driving, and the truck loses all acceleration in traffic. Both reports involve brand-new trucks, and both owners were nearly rear-ended on highways. One failure came at 400 miles. The replacement transmission in that truck later produced a burning smell and a grinding noise, and the dealer found metal debris in the pan, which meant a second full teardown. Losing power at speed with traffic close behind is a serious crash risk.
