Which Colorado is it?
EPA figures for each version of the 2023 Chevrolet Colorado. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.
| Version | Drive | EPA rating |
|---|---|---|
| 2.7L 4-cyl | 4WD, RWD | 21–22 mpg |
- Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Colorado that averages well under the EPA 21 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Why these checks: what owners reported

Electrical301 crash
The digital instrument panel and infotainment screen go blank or restart while driving. Speed can disappear for up to a minute. Headlight controls sit inside that screen, so a frozen display can leave the lights unusable until the battery is disconnected. Batteries drain overnight, sometimes after a failed over-the-air update, and jump starts bring a string of warning lights. Many reports also describe false automatic emergency braking from highway speed, with one crash and 4 injuries. Several of those reports came after the front camera recall repair. Random alarms, false blind spot alerts, and a dead backup camera stuck waiting on a back-ordered harness round out the list.
Automatic emergency braking181 crash
The truck brakes hard on its own with nothing ahead, sometimes to a full stop from 40 to 75 mph. It happens on empty highways, in intersections, during turns, and with adaptive cruise control on. Several drivers were nearly rear-ended, one was sideswiped, and one was hurt. Dealers often cannot reproduce the fault or say the system is working as designed, and some owners say the recall repair did not stop it. A few have switched the system off. Less often, the system stops warning at all, and a software update clears only the dash light.
Brakes17No crashes
Many of these reports describe the same false automatic braking: sudden stops on highways and in parking lots that leave seatbelt marks and sore necks, sometimes even after the recall software update. Separately, the brakes turn spongy at speed while a brake failure warning limits the truck to 60 mph. Rotors warp early, as soon as 17,000 miles, and the whole truck shakes under braking. Dealers often refuse to cover it. Other reports describe a front caliper that wore its pad to nothing, brakes locking while the truck was flat towed, and false brake pad monitor messages.
Engine7No crashes
Upper radiator hoses leak where they connect to the radiator, and owners describe it as a widespread failure on these trucks. Coolant can spray onto a hot engine, and owners worry about fire or overheating. Other reports describe sudden power loss at highway speed. In one, the engine downshifted and shut off at 75 mph and needed a new fuel pump power control module. In another, the truck slowed from 70 to 30 mph with a misfire at 3,000 miles, and repeated dealer visits did not fix it. One oil leak after a recall repair left the dipstick dry.
Transmission7No crashes
Reports here cover the cooling system, the electronics, and the transmission. Low coolant flow codes come back even after a warranty coolant pump replacement, and the upper radiator hose leaks where it meets the radiator. Body control module faults knock out the locks, the windows, and the 4WD display, and dealers repeatedly find no fault. The transmission shifts hard between first and second on the first drive of the day, which dealers call normal. One transmission failed on the freeway. A crankshaft seal failed at 69,000 miles and drained the oil without turning on any warning light.
Exterior lights6No crashes
After a right turn, the left turn signal flashes on its own for a few seconds. This is the most common complaint in this category. It happens at any speed, and owners whose dealers replaced the turn signal switch say the problem remains. Other drivers can misread the false signal. With a trailer connected, the left signal may flash rapidly and fail the onboard trailer light test. Single reports describe an instrument panel that stays blank at startup and false braking under adaptive cruise control.
Steering6No crashes
The same right-to-left turn signal fault shows up most often here. One dealer tried 3 times to fix it without success, and drivers report near collisions when others misread the signal. More serious reports pair heavy steering with weak brakes, along with "Service Power Steering" and "No Assist Soon" warnings. In one truck this happened twice, the second time at about 24,000 miles, and another owner linked it to an aging battery. A front suspension squeak at low speed continues even after the bushings were replaced.
Lane keeping5No crashes
The blind spot warning lights up with no vehicle nearby, often at night, and sometimes misses real cars. With lane assist on, a false alert can steer the truck back as the driver changes lanes. Some reports say both mirror lights stay on and the windows stop working. Dealers often cannot reproduce the fault, and in one case a door sensor replacement did not help. Problems start early, within days of purchase or near 3,000 miles. Several owners also report sudden automatic braking to a full stop, including once at 75 mph.
In owners' own words
Excerpts from complaints Colorado owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.
Vehicle completely drains battery overnight. It has happened 3 times since purchase in July 2023. After jumping the battery multiple errors occur including check engine lights. This truck has less than 3500 miles. It is happening to hundreds of brand new colorados.

The blind spot warning in the mirrors is on most of the time for no reason, usually when decelerating, when accelerator is touched the blind spot warning will go out. When the blind spot warning is on the windows will work, very dangerous situation. The service door latch system warning will appear once in a while as well. If you look on the many Chevrolet forums, you find hundreds having the same issues.

Twice in the first 6000 miles this vehicle has suddenly activated the forward collision avoidance system with emergency breaking although no cars were around. Fortunately a vehicle wasn’t behind me otherwise there may have been a collision. I took the vehicle in for service with this complaint and the dealership simply said they could not reproduce the issue during a test drive. Obviously this wasn’t helpful.

Vehicle at random moments will automatically make the vehicle brake to a complete stop. Very dangerous thing to happen and has happened about 5 times and one time my vehicle was side swiped as the vehicle maneuvered away from and hit my rear right side to avoid my braking on the freeway.
Filed with NHTSA, March 2024
The right front brake caliper failed with 15747 miles. Local dealer made repairs and said the caliper was not the cause. Their cause was blaming a brake controller used in towing the vehicle. If the controller had caused the failure more than one wheel would of been effected. The three remaining wheels all showed fine and had over 7mm of brake lining remaining. The wheel effected had ZERO pad remaining. I have replaced parts in my possession for evidence.
Filed with NHTSA, August 2025
Rotors have warped at 17,000 miles. Has been confirmed by dealership to be the issue. This is incredibly soon for this issue to arise, and driver has not driven erratically or applied brakes suddenly. Noticed when brakes suddenly started shaking entire vehicle when applied.
Filed with NHTSA, August 2024
Upper radiator hose rubber grommet failing at 22k. Had a severe coolant leak coming from top radiator hose blowing back onto hot motor which could have turned into a fire quickly. I was lucky! A lot of GMC Canyons and Colorado's are all reporting the same problem around 22k miles. It is currently at Grossman Chevy Old Saybrook, CT for repair.
Filed with NHTSA, May 2025
Upper radiator hoses are failing. Failed at 40k miles due to manufacturer defect of the part. Seeing owners complain about them leaking off the dealer lot and know 10+ that have had theirs fail around 30k miles.

Where the 2023 fits in the Colorado's history
Redesigns and mid-cycle updates change what can go wrong.
The 2023 is the first model year of the Colorado's third generation (2023–2023). First years of a redesign often carry teething problems that Chevrolet fixes in later years, so the checks above matter more than usual.
Should you avoid the first year of a redesign? See the 45-car study.
